Over-40 Magazine Cover Models Are a Rarity

A new study finds that women over 40 are rarely used in editorial and advertising images, even in magazine like Vogue with one-fifth of its readership being women over 50. While this in and of itself may not seem like a big deal, the question is what's the trickle-down effect?

It's easy to focus on how superskinny models negatively influence young women's body images, but stats show that older women may be affected by this unrealistic body ideal as well. Whether the cover models and actresses are young - or old but airbrushed to look 20 years younger - this underrepresentation of realistic, middle-aged women could be contributing to this age group having eating disorders, says the author of this latest study. For example, research from 2001 found one percent of middle-aged women have bulimia compared to 0.9 percent of women ages 18 to 25. I think it's time that magazines geared toward older women should match their cover models to their demographic. What do you think?

Speak Up: Photoshopped Faith Hill

There has been a lot of talk over Faith Hill's appearance on the cover of Redbook recently due to some serious photoshop work that was done to her picture.

I never really understood it all until I stumbled onto Jezebel.com and saw the before and after pictures (above).

To me, it is upsetting that a beautiful woman like Faith Hill is not portrayed accurately. The woman in the first picture is gorgeous and real, the woman in the second picture is flawless and unreal. Women are led to believe such false images of what it means to be a sexy woman due to the very unnatural portrayals we see in the media everyday. What do you think about all this? Lucky magazine is one of our favorite sources for great shopping tips. We're thrilled to share this fabulous story from our friends at Lucky!

Summer officially arrives in less than a week but the Versace team is already thinking about next season. The brand just released its Fall/Winter 2012 campaign and although the clothes are technically for cooler weather, we wouldn't mind wearing them now. The über sexy Italian label isn't really big on covering up, so most of the pieces would probably work for a breezy May or June night. But since nothing hits stores for at least two or three months, we're happy to obsess over the pictures first.

The black and white images feature model Elza Luijendijk with a severe blonde bob, posing on chain-covered cement bricks with big moody photographs of the ocean in the background. The styling was clearly influenced by head designer Donatella; we could see her wearing every single look on the red carpet-especially that black mini dress with the knee-high boots.

One Woman's Quest for the Best: The Fastest, Farthest Female Inline Skate

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Fitness Magazine here on FitSugar!

Over the next few months, families will travel across the U.S. via plane, train or car during summer road trips. Kacie Fischer will be covering the same distance (nearly 4,000 miles, on her route), but on inline skates. . . and in just 74 days. If she reaches her goal, Fischer will also be breaking five Guinness World Records in the process.

We caught up with Fischer, a Promax DOer, after a long day of skating to get the backstory about her fit trip which has been two years in the making.

How did you get started with inline skating?

I started skating when I was 7, but didn’t start skating longer distances until I was cross training as a college runner. I found that I could travel a lot farther and see a lot more, plus it was a lot more exhilarating-try flying down a hill at 40+ miles per hour! Inline skating is like running on steroids.

Katie Holmes and Suri Share a Park Playday in Baton Rouge

Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise met up with a group of friends in Baton Rouge yesterday. They checked out fun animal statues and played in a park during the sunny afternoon. Katie and Suri are back in Louisiana while Tom Cruise films Oblivion, though he's already started switching gears to promote Rock of Ages. He was shirtless on the cover of W and chatted with the magazine about how Katie and Suri encouraged him to take the musical role. His costar Julianne Hough has begun press as well and was a presenter at last night's Billboard Music Awards. Their movie hits theaters on June 15, kicking off an exciting Summer that also includes the Teen Choice Awards, where Tom is nominated for best actor in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
