Meryl Streep pulled out a major upset at the Oscars tonight when she beat out Viola Davis for best actress. It marks Streep's third Oscar (and 17th nomination!), but being a seasoned veteran didn't stop her from showing her excitement backstage in the press room. Streep joked about The Academy being sick of her, gave advice for young women, and talked about why she doesn't take anything for granted.

On what went through her mind when she won: They call your name and you just sort of go into a white light. And it was just thrilling. And it was like I was a kid again - and I was a kid the last time I won. Two of the nominees were not even conceived the last time I won!

On whether or not she got to meet Margaret Thatcher: No, I didn't, but I studied her and I studied. And then the challenge was to imagine her present life, and that was completely on active imagination. There was a lot of freedom in that, but also responsibility to a real person and to history. It was really, very, very satisfying as an actor, as an artist, to make a film that starts out about Margaret Thatcher and ends up being really about all of us.

On how she makes time for personal relationships: It's the juggle and the challenge that we [women] have, but honestly, in my life, because it's in the arts, I don't go to work every day. So my day has been more flexible than other working women, even when I was young and broke. I was only ever working for four months at a time and then I was unemployed. So my children never knew when I was going to be home, which was very valuable [laughs]. It was a struggle. Women have to do it all.

On how it feels to have won three times: I read a poem yesterday, and it had nothing to do with this, but one of the lines jumped out, and it said "It's as strange to be here once as it is to return." So that's true. The whole thing is strange. If you're a human being, it's weird. If you're not, I don't know. Probably fine.

On if she worried that she'd never win again: No. I have everything I've ever dreamed of in my life. I think there's room for other people, and frankly, I understand Streep fatigue. And it shocked me that it didn't override this tonight. I was really, really happy but I don't take anything for granted, that's for sure.

On advice for young women: Never give up, don't give up, don't vie up. Many girls around the world live in circumstances that are unimaginably different. Show business is a golf game compared to the way most kids grow up in the world. But I would say never give up.

On how it felt to see herself as Margaret Thatcher: By the time we had achieved the right amount of less and less and less, I had become acclimated to not looking at Margaret Thatcher in the mirror, I thought it was me. And that was important to me, that I wasn't looking at rubber, that I wasn't looking at me. At that point in creating that character, I had already morphed, in a way, in my head and in my heart with her. And her concerns, and her interests, her zeal, her mission, her sense of rightness, and all that. But honestly, when we first had the old-age makeup on, I saw my dad. Maybe my dad looked like Margaret Thatcher.

Michelle Williams clutched her best actress in a comedy or musical Golden Globe for My Week With Marilyn en route to the Weinstein Company's afterparty last night. She posed on the carpet withouth her best friend and date, Busy Philipps. The girls met up inside, though, and Busy later tweeted her happiness for Michelle. Busy wrote, "That was genuinely one of the most fun nights ever. So incredibly proud of my best friend!" Harvey Weinstein got shout-outs in mutiple acceptance speeches last night, being alternatively referred to as "the punisher," or in a memorable quip from Meryl Streep, as "God." Meryl was another winner who turned out for the company's event. She took home the best actress in a drama honor for The Iron Lady.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who's a close friend of Harvey's, caught up with his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman. Jason Statham, Rosie's boyfriend, was also there to share champagne with guys like Rob Lowe, Alexander Skarsgard, and Gerard Butler. Lots of stars and friends-of-the-famous rolled through the bash, including Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and a Beverly Hills housewife. Announcing the 2012 Oscar Nominations!

The 2012 Oscar nominations have been announced! Lots of award season regulars, like The Artist and The Descendants, got some love, but there were also a handful of surprises, like nominations for Nick Nolte, Gary Oldman, and Terrence Malick. Bridesmaids also scored big, with noms for best original screenplay and best supporting actress for Melissa McCarthy.

The Academy chose nine films for best picture, with lots of familiar titles in there, plus a couple that had early awards buzz but haven't necessarily had consistent attention, like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and The Tree of Life. The films that racked up the most nominations were Hugo with 11 and The Artist with 10.

Viola Davis Says She Had Her "Loser Face" Ready Before Her Best Actress Win Tonight

Viola Davis made an emotional speech tonight after taking the best actress honor at the Critics' Choice Awards. The actress stopped by to discuss that heartfelt speech, as well as her surprise over winning, in the press room shortly after leaving the stage. Viola talked openly about the controversy The Help sparked, the many movies she's thinking about making next, and how she was planning to spend her evening before she learned she was the winner in her category.

On how she makes such great speeches: "I have no idea, seeing that I had my loser face ready. I had a glass of champagne just so that I could relax all the muscles so the smile could come naturally. I guess I've always had a lot to say, you know? And I always felt like if I had a platform to say it, it would be God's greatest gift for me. But that's all I can say."

On not expecting her win: "I was really going to be OK. I was going to go home and get in my jacuzzi with my husband and you know, maybe have lots of champagne. I was good with it."

On what project she wants to do next: "Oh gosh, there's so many. I mean, there's so many that I've optioned. I have a story, the The Personal History of Rachel Dupree . . . I've always wanted to see all of Octavia Butler's work on screen. She's a black science-fiction writer. I want to be in a sci-fi . . . to be slaying dragons. It's endless, the possibilities. The narratives I've always wanted to be a part of that I've never seen myself in, and so there's not enough time in the day to tell you."

On whether she was surprised by The Help's success: "I thought it was going to go one way or the other, that it was going to be a huge success or a huge failure. It had that mark on it. It was about the maids in 1960s Mississippi with a very thick dialect, and I knew the African-American community was not happy with it, and yet I knew it had a huge fan base, so I knew it could go either way. And I'm glad it went this way."

Announcing the 2012 Critics' Choice Nominations

Award season is officially around the corner, which means the nominations are coming in droves now. The Critics' Choice nominees feature some of the same contenders we've been expecting, like The Descendants and The Artist, but also has a few surprises. Namely, Martin Scorsese's Hugo has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, leading the pack with 11 nods.

Brad Pitt's got not one but two movies up for best picture, with Moneyball and The Tree of Life, not to mention a best actor nod for himself. The Help also cleaned up with eight nominations. On a personal note, we're excited to see some of our favorite 2012 comedies getting some recognition, like The Muppets, Horrible Bosses, and of course, Bridesmaids.
