Take Marlene Dietrich, put her in the boudoir, and she'll embody the mood and look of John Galliano's latest collection for Dior.

Her mannish suits, top hots, and heavily made up eyes all appeared on the runway. But Galliano didn't stop at just emulating the Marlene Dietrich that was, he carried her into the present - and the future - with mafia-worthy pinstripes, Cavalli-esque animal prints, and bedroom-ready negligees.

The lingerie odes were tangible: transparency here, lacy edging there. And some looks walked the line between racy and brash. But an overarching riff on the 30s flapper girl who dabbles in her gangster boyfriend's clothing prevailed, looking very Galliano for Dior indeed.

On Our Radar: Aquascutum Vintage

This month, traditional British brand Aquascutum is launching a limited edition collection of coats and trenches inspired by designs from the 30s through the 50s.

The Aquascutum Vintage collection will include pieces worn by past Aquascutum fans and icons like Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, and Sophia Loren, and will be sold in the U.S. exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman. The luscious coats, which run from approximately $2000-$5600, will be made of fabrics like napa leather, duchesse satin, and double cashmere - serious luxury!

I am so thrilled you are all embracing the androgynous dressing trend! As a result, you all may enjoy the new book release Dietrich Icon, $25.

A multi-faceted woman indeed, over her 70 year career, Marlene Dietrich conquered silent films, cabaret, vaudeville, theater, army camp shows, radio, television, ballet, circus performances and Hollywood classics. Whoa - I didn't even know her scope was that broad. Speaking of, this was a broad like no other. With those thinly arched brows, that sultry Teutonic voice and legendary legs, she was a bit of a revolutionary.

This tribute to her is not only a biography but also a collection of academic essays that touch on such topics as Germany’s complex relationship with Dietrich, her ambiguous sexuality, her place in the lesbian archive, and her star status, but with fresh critical perspective and an emphasis on historical background.

Obsessed With . . . the Tuxedo

When our evening style sensibilities crave something a little more snappy, we look to the tuxedo. Tuxedo looks dominated the Fall runways at Jason Wu, Tibi, Dolce & Gabbana, and Moschino, then on sharply dressed celebs like Olivia Palermo and Evan Rachel Wood. Not that the tux is new on the scene; we owe it to greats like Marlene Dietrich for making the menswear evening staple a glamorously cool option for us girls. With holiday season approaching, and with it, a bevy of parties, we totally plan on utilizing the look via slim black trousers, tailored suit jackets (leather lapels optional), and blouses with crisp contrast piping. If we're feeling particularly snazzy we'll finish the look with a playful bow tie and a classic pair of heels to counter all the boyish charm.

Gwyneth Paltrow Heads Home as Progress Moves Forward on Her HBO Miniseries

Gwyneth Paltrow touched down at Heathrow Airport this morning. She's back in England after leaving just last week in order to spend a few days in San Francisco, where she joined Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom Thursday to celebrate the opening of the de Young Museum's "Balenciaga and Spain" exhibit. Gwyneth had the weekend off from doing promotional work ahead of her movie Country Strong's opening abroad. She's involved in a variety of projects with her blossoming music career and her upcoming release of her cookbook, My Father's Daughter, later this year. Another endeavor is moving forward as well, with a European production company signing on to coproduce her BBC and HBO miniseries based on Marlene Dietrich's life.

2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Ralph Lauren

Inspired by the smoky mystery of the Far East, Ralph Lauren gave us a little Shanghai surprise this morning. With a soft version of David Bowie's "China Girl" playing in the background, models emerged in mostly black, often lustrous ensembles accessorized with jade earrings and red lacquered heels. The silhouettes remained classic - halter dresses, tuxedos, shawl coats - but he achieved a dramatic, sexy mood via rich satiny fabrics and sparkling details. There was ornate beading on dresses, including a black dress that shone from being covered entirely in black beads, wrap dresses done in a luxurious garnet-hued panné velvet, and a double-breasted suit in shantung silk that inspired visions of Marlene Dietrich in Shanghai Express. Ralph had his menswear moment as well, showing pinstripe trousers with a jade green silk top and sharply tailored tuxedos. 2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Tommy Hilfiger

Russell Simmons, Rosario Dawson, Petra Nemcova, and Olivia Palermo were among the celebs lining the runway to see just how Tommy Hilfiger would present his take on classic American sportswear. Show notes promised the "nonchalant style of a 1970s rock star's girlfriend." Case in point: the first look, walked down to the tune of a Rolling Stones song, was a double-breasted suit jacket and wide-leg trousers - hello, Bianca Jagger. There was an emphasis on men's suiting, which toed the line between a sophisticated Marlene Dietrich and a cartoon Dick Tracy, but done in herringbone and worn with silk shirts and wide-brim hats. More wearable were boatneck sweatshirts, chunky sweaters, sleeveless parkas, and a toggle skirt, all referencing the classically preppy Hilfiger girl. It was a pleasing presentation of American style, mostly because Hilfiger didn't mess with classics like mackintosh coats and five-pocket jeans, he just updated them with luxurious flourishes - rubber, needlepoint, ponyhair - to make preppy dressing feel modern.
