I don't know if 15-year-old Taylor Momsen, of Gossip Girl fame, is really into heavy metal. However, I saw Guns n' Roses (and Metallica) when I was 12 so I was a wee rockin' chick. But she certainly played the part recently in Yves Saint Laurent, black leather, shimmering jewels, and smoky eyes. I would like to advocate that one should only attempt this look if they have rock in their soul, or the rock gods would not approve . . .

Rise and Shine! Metallics and mini dresses are back with a vengeance. The trend this season is sexy shine. As pictured, Eliza Dushku is showing us a great example of this trend done right. Forever 21 and American Apparel have some great alternatives we can all afford.

When choosing metallics there are a few things to consider:

The type of material of the garment: Fabrics with shine, if not chosen wisely, can come across as low quality. To prevent this, try the item on first. Is there a stretch to the fabric or do you just look like a roll of aluminum foil?
No shine overload: I am all for glitz but sometimes there can be too much. If you are going to incorporate shine into your ensemble, please use discretion. Do not ever wear this fabric as a top and bottom. The fashion police will be called immediately. Choose one garment and stick to it.
Have fun: Metallics are all about fun and making a statement. So own it and be fierce.

Trend Alert: Metallica Jackets

I have a ton of Winter coats in my closet, but I've yet to own a metallica jacket. I admit, I was shy of the shiny, but seeing Gwyneth Paltrow in her silver Alice + Olivia coat and Christian Louboutin caged booties at the Valentino event in NYC swayed me otherwise. These toppers inject major wattage to dark winterwear, and are perfect for upcoming holiday soirees. If the longer length is too much bling for your taste, try out shorter jackets or tailored blazers. Let's not forget to pair these shimmery jackets with tough shoes - a la Gwyneth - to temper the glossy glamour.

Really, I knew it wouldn't too long before we would start seeing metallic incarnations and I am quite excited for these. They kind of make my mouth water; is that normal? Lanvin has such a rich history and it amazingly keeps reinventing itself. This Metallic Kentucky Tote, $2,175, is immaculate. The soft leather and warm metallic hue is so refreshing next to some of the more masculine and gaudy handbags out there right now. Best of all, it will be great for Spring, Summer and Fall, because, as you recall, small metallic purses are here to stay. Plus, the top half sort of reminds me of the Hermes Birkin, and anything that resembles a Birkin is a sign of a bag to have in my book.

Old Navy Metallic Jeans: Love It or Hate It?

Metallic is a great trend because it instantaneously adds shimmer and shine to a dull outfit. Old Navy has applied that concept to its denim with Old Navy "The Flirt" Metallic Jeans ($20, originally $35). I personally like a little sheen to my jeans so I would wear these if the silhouette is flattering. What's your opinion?
