Recently celebs have been marching the streets in strong, structured military-inspired coats. It's obvious why. These statements in outerwear provide a sort of fashion armor; you can take on the big bag world in a determined jacket with regal flair such as brass buttons and charismatic collars. I adore the way Sienna wears hers below - who cares what she's wearing underneath it, her fashion armor and her hairy tail-wagging troops are ready for battle. Let the fashion face off begin.

Fall Coat Trends: Military-Inspired Styles

Everyone loves having an excuse to buy a fabulous new coat, whether you live in southern California or northern Michigan. Though temperatures haven't dipped to autumn levels just yet, it's time to start thinking about the coat that will get you through the Fall and Winter. Today we begin our weeklong look at coat trends for Fall 2006. Today’s spotlight: military-inspired styles. These uniform-inspired coats actually vary wildly, from high-collared decorated looks to epaulet-adorned field jackets. Sneak Peek! Zara, Fall '09

Zara's look books are always dangerous territory - they tempt us with runway-inspired looks for way less. For Fall '09, Toni Garrn models LBDs with prominent shoulders a la Balmain, faux fur vests, tweed coats, military-inspired details, and lots of crisp white shirts. This one puffed-shoulder dress is clearly inspired by Dolce and Gabbana's Fall line. I have to be frank, Zara's Fall '08 with Sasha Pivovarova tempted me way more, but that doesn't mean I won't still go into the store. Who knows, I may even fall in love, like I often do in Zara. What do you think?

Trend Alert: Gold Buttons

Raise your hand if you fancy gold buttons?

What began as a military-inspired functional decoration has been largely popularized by brands like Juicy Couture and Tory Burch. You have to admit: A shiny gold button adds just a touch of bling to a classic trench. Scarlett may be wearing some super cute platforms here, but my eye went to those little golden fasteners on her camel coat.

And here's the best part: You can try this at home. Take your everyday trench, or anything really, on a field trip to your local fabric store and buy some new sunshiny buttons. Voila! A fresh look for five dollars.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Diane von Furstenberg

Leave it to Diane von Furstenberg to create a foreign affair, where the muse is a sophisticate who wanders Berlin's dark streets, meets a handsome stranger, and then flees to Shanghai the next morning. Her wardrobe is what she picks up along the way; a collection of beaded dresses, ruffly blouses, wide legged pants, tailored jackets and military-inspired outerwear. Don't forget her little Bugle Boy hat.

The real stunners in this collection were not DVF's always-fantastic dresses. Maybe those dresses were great but we couldn't really see them since they were hidden and belted under Glenn plaid blazers, herringbone coats, chunky cashmere cardigans and peplum jackets. As one who is pretty satisfied with my outerwear, Diane has forced me to reconsider.

Fab Flash: Another New Clothing Line for MK and Ashley!

Good news for all of you Mary-Kate and Ashley fashion fans! Now that they have the luxury market covered with The Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley have announced the launch of a new contemporary sportswear line, Elizabeth and James, coming out this Fall.

The line is named after their siblings and will include blazers, washed leather jackets, military-inspired tops, shrunken tees, oversize tees, pencil skirts, cashmere sweaters, fur jackets, and cashmere coats, all playing with a masculine/feminine theme. There will also be silk dresses and a sequined minidress inspired by one of Mary-Kate's vintage finds. The collection will be sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Intermix, with a price range of $40-$452 - making it slightly more affordable than The Row. Exciting!
