Modeling Takes Beauty . . . and Mad Skills

Who says models are all beauty and no brains? Okay, I can't vouch for their brains, but I can prove that they have some mad skills. Wearing what looks like a suffocating bag around your face and having to walk down a long runway takes precision. Many models trip, even without such an obstacle, so I give the models who walked the Junya Watanabe Fall '08 show in Paris some respect. It looks like Paris and London, namely the shows of Watanabe, Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Gareth Pugh, proved to be the most taxing for the models. Then again, signing on to work with such avant-garde designers, they probably expected a bit (okay, a lot) of craziness. Could you do it?

Peep the cutie running errands in LA donning a tank, Ray-Bans, and denim mini. It doesn't look like anything special at first glance but notice the new neckline. This ultra deep cut injects major flirt factor– if you got it, scoop it low girl!

Fab Ad: Chanel Pre-Fall '09

Chanel's Pre-Fall '09 collection was opulent to the max - it was, after all, inspired by Russia - so the ad campaign had no choice but to follow suit. And who better than Russian model Sasha Pivovarova to show off her rich roots? Karl Lagerfeld served as photographer, as he likes to do. The master styled and snapped his extravagant pieces, which were designed to showcase the skills of Chanel's couture atelier. Although these Pre-Fall pieces aren't attainable by all, they are quite mesmerizing. You get the sense that they aren't just clothes, that they have a rich history behind them. New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: Preen

I wonder what Kanye West thought as he watched the leggy, determined Preen ponies flood the runway. Hotties! Preen always reminds me of the power designers Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi hold. This collection was not just hot swirly dresses and dramatic outerwear. The married duo played with oversized houndstooth, cut outs, fur, mohair, and pink metallic pants; you can tell these designers don't take themselves seriously, and man do they have skills. I think the reason I adore Preen so much is it's severe, but playful; an awesome combination.While Anja delivered the wow factor in her pastel chubby, it was surprising to see Trish Goff and Hannelore Knuts back in the model mix. I always welcome a model comeback, 'tis the season.

Oh, Olga. The Ukranian actress hasn't even shown us her acting skills in the new James Bond Quantum of Solace (can't wait for it, btw), and she has us girl crushing already. You loved her in casual clothes, and I guarantee you'll love her evening ensemble. This black Dolce & Gabbana mermaid gown she wore to the film's Rome premiere reminds us of the power of noir on the red carpet. It helps that Olga has a model figure, and she knows how to vogue for the camera. Her hair seems naturally wavy and her makeup is understated - this beautiful woman does not need to pile on the face cake. Her black and white choker adds a deco touch, while her tasseled metallic clutch is simply fun. Are you crushing yet?

2008 Fall Couture: Christian Lacroix

Mythical goth drama emanated out the seams at Christian Lacroix's 2008 Fall couture showing. Through tons of noir and lace, I was spellbound with how the designer captured the essence of insect beauty and turned it into a magnificent collection of wearable art.

Models walked down the bright red runway morphing from simple, cocoon-like structures into free form gowns. Lacroix showed his skills turning heavy felts, wools, silks, and jersey into structured tops with major shoulder detailing. The dresses and skirts went from layered and flouncy to short and constructed. While Lacroix dabbled with different silhouettes, exact detailing was a constant. The use of heavy lace and intricate embroidery with insect-like creatures sitting upon shoulders of tiered gowns and structured jackets was nothing short of rich and decadent.

The occasional pops of jewel-toned colors were a delight and also bright stints of neon yellow. Leave it to Lacroix to show a little bit of everything in his latest couture.

High Fashion on Ice

Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bundchen and the slew of other mega models are talented, but I highly doubt they are skilled enough to do high fashion on ice. American figure skater, Sasha Cohen, proves in V Magazine's Blade Runner shoot that you don't need to be a professional model to create killer high fashion photos. These shots are worth a front-row seat and we're your ticket.

Do you all remember the Sasha Cohen competition on season two of Project Runway? The designing gang's task was to design a skating outfit for the 2006 silver medalist. What do you think about these photos of Sasha? Are they high fashion or do they fall flat on the ice?

Mega model Heidi Klum recently debuted her Victoria's Secret makeup line and looked damn good doing it. She got down to work, testing her makeup skills in a Cecilia De Bucourt grey stud tee, faded grey skinnies, a white studded belt, and peep toe pumps. Though there's no color in her outfit, she manages to keep it fun with the stud details, her voluminous waves and ear-to-ear smile. Now only if we could all look this gorgeous while on the job!
