Richard Chai Love Fall 2012

Inspired by the idea of "handsome femininity," Richard Chai showed a Fall collection that was simultaneously simple, yet statement-making. “I didn’t want to do anything that was tricky,” Chai told The New York Times. “I didn’t want to create looks that were just for the show. I wanted it to be approachable and believable, but also be really aspirational. At the end of the day, it’s pieces that I want people to wear.” Chai's boy-meets-girl vision was interpreted into gorgeous slim-fit striped trousers, structured oversized blazers and coats, cozy knits, blanket-stripe coats, and moody florals. The latter was cut into diaphanous sheer skirts, corduroy pants, and jackets, adding a feminine streak to his city-slicker style. Furthermore, his outerwear was something to contend with; Chai's selection of oversized structured jackets and coats were perfectly tailored and ideal for topping off just about any Fall look.

Trends: Menswear, painterly florals, blanket stripes, boxy blazers and coats.
Colors: Dark red, pinks, gray, black, navy blue, brown.
Key Piece: We loved the multi-colored blanket-stripe dress and trousers.
Accessories: Black ankle booties and lace-up boots.
Who Would Wear It: Downtown girls looking to add a menswear-inspired touch to their look, like Olivia Palermo.

BCBG Runway Fall 2012

An architectural aesthetic, specifically Bauhaus style, rules for BCBG's Fall 2012 collection. Structure manifested itself via colorblocking, but it was done on fluid silk chiffon shift dresses, so the effect was a pretty blend of strong forms on flowy silhouettes. The geometric shapes created by bold color combos - black and orange, merlot and blush - were intensified with textural plays like sheer insets and clever pleating that made dresses look magically fluid and sharp at the same time. To counter the collection's emphasis on lightweight materials like silk and chiffon, it also sent cozy outerwear down the runway - we have mixed emotions on the return of gorilla-armed coats, but the multicolor fur vests and canvas and leather trenches were artful choices for next season. The minimalist approach to geometric forms and bold color combinations, together with the flowy silhouettes, make for clothes that are ideal to wear to a gallery opening.

Trends: Colorblocking, fur, architectural detail, Bauhaus.
Colors: Merlot, blush, camel, cream, navy, coral, teal.
Key Piece: The canvas and leather trench coat; the super-cool pleated dresses with tulle inserts.
Accessories: Open-toe ankle-strap sandals, bags with contrasting textures like snake and suede.
Who Would Wear It: Erin Wasson was in the front row, but the structured, urbane collection seems more suited to Naomi Watts or Thandie Newton.

She paired a red tank with a beige shirt, gray zippered sweater, auburn cardigan, and a black leather biker jacket. Her red jeans aren't the only statement piece here. She threw in some sweet gold metallic kicks, a multicolored satchel, and slick aviators to top it off.

There's nothing like a print-happy ensemble to cheer us up - and Fab reader TheFancyTeacup certainly stepped up to the plate. She paired a casual printed sweatshirt and black jacket with cuffed multicolored kaleidoscope-printed jeans for a super dynamic silhouette. Her oversized metallic envelope clutch, metal bangles, and chic black suede pumps were the perfect toned-down accessories to complement the wilder prints on top.

Untapped Resource: Antique Suzanis For a Steal!

While clicking through dozens of pictures during a late night Google Image search for suzanis, I stumbled upon the mother ship. If you're a sucker for central Asian prints like suzanis and ikats, you must check out Uzbek Craft, an online store stocked with Oriental textiles. Aside from offering fabrics, they also carry pretty pillows and jewelry. My favorite though, is their gallery of breathtaking vintage suzanis, which are astonishingly reasonable at a price range of $50-$300.

There are several stages to creating these magnificent textiles. First, a pattern is drawn on the fabric to serve as a guide for the embroidery. Then a group of artists, usually family members, work on embroidering separate panels of fabric using colorful silk thread. Once the panels are complete, they are sewn together to create a cohesive piece of cloth.

The layered process of creating a suzani is reflected in interior designer Kathryn Ireland's approach to incorporating the prints in her work. Look of the Day: Equestrian Cool

Fab reader Adoretoadorn successfully tackled two tricky styles: animal prints and the red, white, and blue color combo. Her quirky nod to equestrian dress comes in the form of a super cute horse-printed blouse, which she then paired with a red scalloped-hem skirt to complete the multicolor spectrum. To accessorize the sweet look, she wore a long gold chain, large sunglasses, metal bangles, and metallic silver lace-up brogues.

Shopping For Candy-Colored Glass Pendant Lamps

When Feldman Architecture updated a Victorian home, the kitchen benefitted from the addition of multi-colored, playfully bulbous hanging glass pendants. Similarly, any home would quickly move in a more modern and laid back direction if a few candy-colored pendant lamps were added to its ceilings.

You can actually source lamps like these through a local glassblower. Years ago I bought a rich, gold-hued handblown pendant lamp for an unbelievable $50 from an open studio art crawl event in Berkeley. This lamp has traveled with me through several moves, and remains a favorite home decor piece.

Of course, you can also look to larger retailers to find these glass pendants. I adore the ballooned shapes of the Cisco Glass Jug Lamp ($400, bottom row, middle). Each lamp contains unique variations, since it's blown by hand. Sizes range from eight to 16 inches wide.

In a perfect world, I'd splurge on half a dozen of these Niche Modern Mineret Pendants ($650 each, top row, left). Inspired by Moorish architecture, each handblown piece features a teardrop bottom and is made in New York.

Reminding me of the gold wrapper on a Werther's butterscotch candy, the Produzione Privata Acquamiki Pendant Lamp ($840, bottom row, left) is handmade from Murano glass, and would add a luxurious touch to a lady's dressing room or bathroom. I'm seriously drooling over the Tracy Glover Chance Vase ($212) at Barneys New York. The candy cane colors are so summery and cheerful, and since no two are alike, they look fantastic bundled together.

I feel like I need some more happy, carefree décor in my home, so I did a little shopping for multicolor stripes.
