Was It Fab That Michelle Obama Stuck With a Hometown Designer For the Convention?

With the fashion world at her fingertips, Michelle Obama could have worn a frock from the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, or St. John at the Democratic National Convention. Instead, Obama opted for a '50s-inspired turquoise blue fitted sheath dress from her favorite hometown designer, Maria Pinto. This leading lady is loyal, and we love it.

The designer has been dressing Michelle and her two daughters since the beginning of the campaign trail. "She's like an average customer. She'll say, 'Oh, I like that dress.' She'll buy one or several," said Pinto, who credited Obama for her success.

Timing couldn't have been better for the designer, who recently rebounded from employee embezzlement that resulted in bankruptcy and an illness, which left her bedridden for six months. Obama has been spotted wearing Pinto's frocks throughout the campaign trail and if she continues, Pinto's success will rise as well.

The Daily Front Row and The Fashion Mini - my favorite reads at New York Fashion Week - are singing Michelle Obama's fashion praises. They've released a special 116-page collector's issue dubbed Michelle Obama: 100 Days of Style ($7.49, includes shipping and handling), now also available at major bookstores and newsstands. It celebrates the first lady's first three months in the White House, from the inaugural ball to her trip through Europe. The issue also goes behind the scenes with her favorite designers. I love it - President Obama got praise for his first 100 days in office, and Michelle is being applauded not only for her philanthropy but also for her stellar style. Such a power couple!

Fab Flash: Vogue Wants Michelle Obama

UPDATE: Sources have confirmed that Michelle Obama will appear on the cover of Vogue magazine. Photographer Annie Leibovitz was reportedly spotted leaving the Hay-Adams Hotel, the place where the Obamas stayed before moving into the White House. We're suspecting Michelle will appear in Vogue's hefty March issue . . .

She's not even first lady yet, but Michelle Obama is in high demand. Vogue, who's shown no modesty in their support for Obama, wants to feature Michelle on its front cover. If Michelle accepts, she will be the second first lady to ever grace the cover of its magazine.

“Starting with Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s been a long-standing tradition to photograph the new first lady. So needless to say, we are very interested in working with Mrs. Obama. Precisely how is still being discussed,” said a Vogue spokesman.

The fashionable first lady, seen left in Narciso Rodriguez's red and black confection, would potentially be following in the footsteps of former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, who appeared on the December 1998 issue.

Let's discuss her savvy choice for the We Are One concert on Sunday.She decided on one of her American favorites: Narciso Rodriguez. Michelle is quite secretive about her fashion choices - most designers don't know about them in advance and are overjoyed when they see their goods worn by the First Lady on TV. But Narciso created two custom looks for Michelle's pre-inauguration festivities.

This black and camel coat and separate combo was subtly striking. To avoid being too conservative, Michelle wore a bold pair of white gold and diamond quatrefoil Loree Rodkin chandelier earrings with black diamond center. Not surprising, the stunning earrings cost $17,313. But back to her perfectly coordinated Narciso ensemble. It was smart, didn't upstage Obama, and flattered the First Lady. I like that she opted for separates instead of a simple shift; it created dimension. A woman after my own heart, the bejeweled neckline of her black blouse added a touch of pizazz. Michelle polished the look off with patent pumps and black leather gloves but ditched any sort of hosiery - this Lady is modern, indeed.

Fab Flash: Michelle Obama Is Presidential in Pink in Vogue

Michelle Obama knows a thing or two about fashion. Her cover for Vogue, shot by Annie Leibovitz, has just been released, and the results are nothing short of spectacular. The front page features the first lady wearing a presidential pink silk sheath dress by Jason Wu - the same designer who created her divine white inaugural ball gown.

"I love clothes. First and foremost, I wear what I love. That's what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion," said Michelle Obama.

The First Lady also chose to wear a salmon-themed J.Crew ensemble - one of our favorite brands - and a black and red trimmed Narciso Rodriguez frock for her Vogue spread. Amazing, simply amazing.

Should Michelle Obama Be Supporting African American Designers?

With just a couple days into her reign as the First Lady, Michelle Obama is already starting to feel the pressures of her position. Amnau Eele, former model and co-founder of the Black Artists Association, is filing a formal appeal to the First Lady’s office on behalf of the BAA. The charge? They're mad at her for not wearing anything by an African American designer at her inaugural appearances.

“It’s one thing to look at the world without color but she had seven slots to wear designer clothes. Why wasn’t she wearing the clothes of a black designer? That was our moment,” said Eele. There's no doubt the First Lady has a lot of responsibilities to uphold but should her fashion choices be one of them?

First Lady Style: Michelle Obama in Jason Wu

She could have chosen any American great: Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors . . . the list goes on. But she chose a newcomer, Taiwan-born Jason Wu. It's safe to say the 26-year-old designer just got a major career boost. The white, one-shouldered flower applique dress is very, very pretty. And what a breath of fresh air it is. Some are saying it's bridal-esque, others are saying that, on the flip side, it's sexy. I say it's both, and neither in a bad way. And let's not forget: Obama's black and white tux is immaculate - has he ever looked more handsome?The gown is frothy, totally feminine. But is it first lady apropo? I think we've learned by now that Michelle makes up her own style rules. Over the next four years, she'll be breaking any first lady preconceived notions. Isn't that what change is all about? Michelle is destined to be the belle of every inaugural ball tonight.
