Oscars Red Carpet Beauty: How to Get Kate Winslet's Hair

Kate Winslet looked simply radiant at the Oscars Sunday night in her mint green Valentino gown.

I loved her dress, her jewels and her gorgeous and classic hair. Last night I spoke with hairstylist Campbell McAuley, about how he created Kate's old Hollywood style sweeping soft waves secured in a low side chignon. He said,

"Because Kate's dress was lovely and simple, the hair was styled the same way to create an elegant look."

Campbell explained it is crucial to apply a smoothing product when the hair is wet. He used Smooth Hair, $17.50, when the hair is wet. This adds shine and prevents frizz.
Begin by blow drying hair straight. Next, when Campbell was ready to begin styling, he used a medium sized curling iron around the front of her face for volume. Try Enzo Milano's 25 mm Grande Curling Iron, $129.95.
Then, brush out the hair completely until it's smooth and put it in a side ponytail. Then run a nickel sized amount of Technician Color-Protecting Glaze, $20, into the palms of your hands and apply it all over the hair to add even more shine!
Next, add a little extra hair (either a weave or extensions) to the ponytail so that it's fuller and thicker and then shape it into a side knot and secure it with bobby pins.
Lastly, mist hair all over with a light hairspray for hold.

Oscars Red Carpet Beauty: Barely There Makeup

These ladies know how to let their talent and inner beauty speak volumes. Instead of hiding behind a face full of overdone makeup, they chose to play up one feature for a polished and understated look. I think this is a lovely and refreshing change on the red carpet.

Oscars Red Carpet Beauty: How to Get Anne Hathaway's Hair

Anne Hathaway looked very pretty Sunday night at the Oscars. She sported red lips, a 14 carat diamond right hand ring and three diamond bracelets from Van Cleef & Arpels.

Although I wasn't totally in love with her Valentino black and white bow dress, overall she presented herself in a very, sophisticated, elegant and age appropriate way. Anne just has a fabulous demeanor about her that makes you appreciate any ensemble she puts together.

Hairstylist, Adir Abergel created Anne's vintage inspired side swept up-do influenced by the classic style of Audrey Hepburn and the screen siren glamour of Rita Hayworth. Begin by parting hair to the side. Then apply Instant Volume Spray by Fekkai, $19.50, to the roots for a full blow dry using The Classic Brush, $95.
Once hair is blown-dry with lots of body, reshape the side part again to really accentuate it.
Next, pull hair back into a modern chignon and fasten to the side with several hair pins. Keep the look soft and sexy with lots of movement.
Lastly, finish with hairspray for a light hold with lots of shine. Bellisima!

Battle Of The Red Lips: Who Wore It Best?

These ladies really knocked em' dead last night with their red lips. I used to have a theory that red lips only look great on gals with blue eyes, but of course, every rule has an exception. Just look how pretty Anne Hathaway looks at the Oscars.

Here's my list of the contenders in the battle of the red lips. We've got Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth, Nicole, Kirsten Dunst, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rachel Weisz. Who do you think wore it best?

Oscars Hair Trend: Dazzle Up Your 'Do

Starlets are not only taking fashion risks this year, they are also taking risks with their hair. Updo's were extremely popular this year on the red carpet, and these gals used their coif as an opportunity to add style and an extra accessory to their look.

Here are three jazzy hair accessories on: Maggie Gyllenhaal (she wore a feather hair clip), Katie Holmes (she wore a beaded headpiece) and Penelope Cruz (she attached a faux braid). I think they look great, what do you think?

Beauty Marked! A Gentle Exfoliator for The Red Carpet!

With the Oscars red carpet quickly approaching celebs have already visited their dermatologists, and other "doctors," in anticipation of the ultimate scrutinizing. Now it's time to zero in on the ensemble, get a massage, or two, and refresh the skin so it is glowing on Sunday.

I have just squeezed out the very last drop of my Sweep by Remede facial exfoliator. I keep it in the shower and use a nickel sized amount twice a week on my face. Call me sick, but I like how you can really feel the little particles scrubbing away your dead/dry skin. The best part about this is that it's light and doesn't irritate - this is key since seasoned celebs know better than to experiment this close to the big day.

Since I am such a beauty junkie, I simply refuse to buy another tube. I'd really like to try something different, something that will gently exfoliate me so I shine on the red carpet! Oscar de la Renta Worries, but Wants to Help Keep Tahoe Blue

De la fabulous. I was for real when I said I was heading to Lake Tahoe for Oscar de la Renta's annual fashion show luncheon. Along with Saks Fifth Avenue, and held at the gorgeous Fritz family estate in Sunnyside, the event was like no other. If you've never been to the outdoor haven that is Tahoe and are wondering how Oscar de la Renta's elegant clothes would work, the designer himself wasn't sure at first. He told me "The first time I was told I was going to show on an open space I was worried about evening clothes - are they going to look good on a lake? In fact it looks very wonderful, it translates really well." It's true. Oscar's chic-turned-exotic collection fancied quite well on the stark white Saks runway surrounded by yellow lily-topped tables and mountainous beauty.

The show was followed by an auction and lunch and these people were serious. The highest bid - $22,000 - went toward an Oscar de la Renta New York fashion week package. If I were a richie, I would have bid on a week stay for me and five friends at Oscar's Tortuga Bay villas. Um, yeah.

Oscar took over this event from Bill Blass in 1995 and usually shows his latest Resort collection. The designer's favorite part of this Summer event is spending time in Tahoe. "The lake is unbelievably beautiful, it’s a privilege to spend time here. It's wonderful that people preserve the lake for future generations. I just try to enjoy the lake and be with friends." The event benefits Keep Tahoe Blue, a nonprofit that helps preserve the alpine lake.

Oscar was a pleasure to interview. I caught him before he zoomed away on a speedboat, we chatted in the sun on the pier. He was very elegant and relaxing; I will always envision him in his cornflower blue blazer, olive skin, smiling, with the blue lake and mountains in the background.

Oscar's inspiration is "Always women. Trying to make clothes a woman would fall in love with. Especially in these times. I have never been in a time for a designer as challenging as now, when the consumer is much aware of fashion. The woman, when I started designing clothes for in the '60s, is very different from the woman today. Today she is independent, makes her own decisions, and purchases." Interesting! Oscar is one designer who's creations have transcended generations, a testament to his design skills and consumer savvy. But as Oscar said, it's all about making clothes a woman would fall in love with.

What did Fab fall in love with? The adorable chic tweed suits and hats in the beginning of the show - an ode to the current obsession with all things French. And a black and white ikat print dress; no one does ikat better than Oscar. The purple and white ikat set played a part in my fantasy of Tortuga Bay.

Belts can complete a gown on the red carpet. We spied quite a few of these finishing touches on the Oscars red carpet. Some belts blended in while others stood out. SJP's provided a smart detail over the intricate beading of her Dior couture gown. Ultimately, a belt helps emphasize one's womanly waist. What's not to love? Source
