Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Alexander McQueen

In a show dedicated to his discoverer, Isabella Blow, who passed away earlier this year, McQueen revisited some of his greatest hits. Architectural & fantastical hat creations by Blow's other big discovery and frequent McQueen collaborator Philip Treacy featured prominently - they were her trademark, after all. The whole runway venue even smelled like Blow, since a bottle of her signature perfume was given to every guest.

The collection formed a wardrobe any drama queen would covet: Hitchcockian suits, ombre kimono dresses, and lace inserts abounded. As always, McQueen was daring with vertiginous Japanese geta-inspired sandals, rainbow prints, and face-covering masks. But my favorite had to be the phoenix motif, so appropriate because of its symbolism of rebirth. The bird, in all its feathered glory, front and center on a beautiful baby blue gown; Isabella Blow couldn't have asked for a better tribute.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Stella McCartney

Stella has swept me off my vintage sandals - this hasn't happened for a few seasons with her. I don't know if it's the overall hippie feel, the flowing watercolor prints or the sharp, yet soft, khaki tailoring, but her Spring collection is beautifully feminine.

With the lightweight touch that is Stella, her flower ladies were also in the company of easy breezy girls in neutrals and blues. A cool paisley print was also lovely, as were the ruffles, crochet details and some slight Native American beading on the accessories - love. It was also sleepy time, with silky soft dresses and separates resembling both womens and menswear pajamas, but her strong tailoring nipped any overly ethereal feel in the bed, I mean, bud! My one gripe: just say no to onesies! Stella obviously has a soft spot for them and I do not concur.

All of this beauty was set against a "vertical vegetal wall" created by botanist Patrick Blanc. As you all know, Stella is a vegetarian designer with a purpose.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Louis Vuitton

Just in time for Halloween, Marc Jacobs has a naughty nurse costume for you. And that's just the beginning of a slightly mad, slightly amazing, Spring Louis Vuitton collection.

Inspired by both the artist Richard Prince, see the nurses and the accessories, and SpongeBob SquarePants, see the colors, it's no wonder Jacobs churned out another crazed collection. For those of you who remember his New York hodgepodge of clothes, for Louis Vuitton he had a similar scatterbrained vibe. There was some sheer energy - all the way up to the top of models' heads with sheer headpieces. And while some looks appeared to be deconstructed prom dresses of yore, his other plays with fabrics - Lurex knits, tweed, sequins - were a delight. There was a mess of accessories, from statement jewelry to questionable handbags and gloves.

If you ask me, some of this mess is wearable and scream funky editorial fare, as for the rest, not so much.

Posh & The Spice Girls Are Still Making Headlines

Victoria Beckham traded her sexy black number for a more modest (yet still gorgeous) green dress at the Chanel show at Paris Fashion Week today. Dita Von Teese kept her company (wonder if they traded beauty secrets) and stars like Kirsten Dunst and Kanye were also in the audience. As the big Spice Girl Reunion is fast approaching, we're assuming that Posh will be back with her girls soon to start rehearsals. They're even releasing a new single called Headlines. It sounds like they are serious about wanting to impress their fans, which is a good sign considering how quickly their shows sold out.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Chanel

It’s safe to say we are all Chanel fans here. While Karl always has a field day with his Chanel ready to wear collections, he still manages to marry the heritage of the house with the modern day. For Spring we once again witness his magic.

In a third sleek, third sweet, third sportif presentation, there is something for everyone. There was an underlying celestial theme - with a star motif and silver metallic accessories - but not too crazy sci-fi, very wearable. All the favorites will be available: tweed jackets, party dresses, daring short shorts and denim, but this time around they have been given a twist with chain detailing, modern tailoring, sheer fabrics and strategically placed bows and belts. I favor the daytime separates this time around, as opposed to the evening looks - they have more punch. That’s just Fab, what do you all think?!

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Valentino

Addio, Valentino!

Take a good long look ladies, you're witnessing a moment in fashion history - a designer great's last collection. Consummately Val, the collection was rich & colorful, with plenty of polka dots, ruffles, bows, and beautiful gowns to go around. But he didn't get mired in the past; instead, he added some unexpected elements to keep it fresh - such as twisted pleating, 3-D garlands of petals, and colorblocking.

Then came the gowns, oh how those Valentino gowns will be missed (Alessandra Facchinetti, you've got quite the duty ahead of you). Mermaid, column, one-shoulder, and strapless were all present, looking as gorgeous as ever. It's the end of an era, but what an end it was...

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Viktor & Rolf

After last season, when models walked out attached to their own personal lighting apparatuses, I was curious to see what gimmick Viktor & Rolf would come up with next.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are romancing the harlequin for Spring: Pierrot collars, pom-poms, diamond shapes, and violins were choice motifs. The pretty palette was Chanel-inspired: black, white, blushing pink and peach. There were a couple trademark fashion-as-surrealist-art outfits - the ruffled pink coat which framed the model's face with a white rosette and pink violin, for instance.

But as the models emerged from a gaping mouth, it was clear that Viktor & Rolf was going more commercial. Wearable silk minidresses with lace collars and multiple beautiful tiered gowns were red carpet-ready. Even the violin theme was toned down to a lace appliqué or a necklace. Subtle Viktor & Rolf, but the Amsterdam-based fashion brand still astounds.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Christian Dior

Take Marlene Dietrich, put her in the boudoir, and she'll embody the mood and look of John Galliano's latest collection for Dior.

Her mannish suits, top hots, and heavily made up eyes all appeared on the runway. But Galliano didn't stop at just emulating the Marlene Dietrich that was, he carried her into the present - and the future - with mafia-worthy pinstripes, Cavalli-esque animal prints, and bedroom-ready negligees.

The lingerie odes were tangible: transparency here, lacy edging there. And some looks walked the line between racy and brash. But an overarching riff on the 30s flapper girl who dabbles in her gangster boyfriend's clothing prevailed, looking very Galliano for Dior indeed.
