Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Patrick Robinson to Host Costume Institute's American Woman Exhibit

Let's see, this year we explored models as muses, the year before we dodged superheroes. 2010's Costume Institute will be all about American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity. “The story of the American woman is really a story of the power of fashion to shape and define identity,” said Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute. The exhibit will examine our country's fashion between 1890 and 1940 with articles transferred over from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection. To go with the all-American theme, Oprah, Anna Wintour, and Gap's Patrick Robinson will act as co-chairs for the event. Gap Reveals Its Cool, New Denim Collection

Gap is giving its denim collection a trendy makeover with the launch of its new 1969 Premium Jeans collection. The revised denim collection enlisted the help of premium denim designers to create a quality piece falling within Gap's price range of $60. Furthermore, the new collection is budget friendly and slick. “Across the board, we want it to feel sexy and authentic,” said Gap’s VP of design, Patrick Robinson. “Women want their a- and thighs to look great, and guys just want something easy.” The 1969 Premium Jeans collection drops in August and will include a bevy of skinny and boyfriend cuts along with denim shoes by Pierre Hardy, tops, and hats by Albertus Swanepoel.

Fab Ad: Gap Fall '08

I will always love the Gap. I mean, cotton basics? Cozy knits? Preppy staples? Oh, and I love their lip balm. Change is already underway at the company, with Patrick Robinson as head designer under the gun. This Fall campaign, shot by Mikael Jansson, is quintessential Gap - black and white, laid-back poses, American inspired. But the cast and the styling are fresh.
The idea behind the campaign is to “Create Your Own GAP” by mixing and matching classic pieces to create an outfit all your own. The celebrities and models are styled to suit their personal tastes, and the list is vast: Liv Tyler, Georgina Chapman of Marchesa, Fabcon Clemence Poesy (pictured here), Ginnifer Goodwin, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Scott Schuman (of The Sartorialist), Cecilia Dean (cofounder and editor, Visionaire), models Chanel Iman and Lily Donaldson, and more. This exhibits a cooler, more undone Gap with a focus on fashionable, functional garb. Are you impressed?

I already gave you a Spring peek; now get some vernal styling advice from Gap's head designer, Patrick Robinson. The former Paco Rabanne designer dishes about the specific pieces to buy, how to wear them, and offers tips and his design inspirations. He even practices what he preaches with his own Spring-inspired wardrobe! At the end of every segment, there's information on the items worn by the model. I don't know about you, but I'm kinda crushing on this Gap Mac Jacket in Yellow ($70). It looks especially fresh with the popped collar. Armed with advice from Fab and Patrick, you're definitely ready for Spring!

Patrick Robinson for Target Leather Net Bag: Love It or Hate It?

Patrick Robinson's designs hit Target stores last month and they have been flying off the shelves ever since. Imahoopie was curious as to whether or not we like this Leather Net Bag, $35, so she posted it in the Love It or Hate It? group.

Frankly, this purse is a bit too pirate-y for me. It looks like something Keira Knightley's character would carry in Pirates of the Caribbean. The colors don't excite me, and neither does the leather netting. I don't mind the knotted handles, but everything else has to go. Even at $35, I wouldn't carry this, even on the beach. Would you?

Fab Flash: Patrick Robinson Named Executive VP of Gap Design!

Patrick Robinson is a mighty popular man these days. First he nabbed a deal with GO! International at Target and now he has been named executive vice president of design at Gap! The 40-year-old knows a thing or two about designing as he has worked at Giorgio Armani, Anne Klein, Perry Ellis and Paco Rabanne.

In his new role, Patrick will be in charge of all things pertaining to design for Gap Adult and gapbody. He will oversee the brand's womens and mens apparel, accessories, and intimates lines in North America.

We are so proud of Patrick and have no doubt that he will do amazing things at the Gap!

On Our Radar: Patrick Robinson for Target

Starting May 6 (Sunday!), budget-loving fashionistas can go sweep up Target's latest Go International collaboration with American designer, Patrick Robinson. In case you're unfamiliar with Patrick, he started out designing surfer clothes at the age of 14 for his friends in Southern California. Moving to the East Coast, he graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York and went on to work for some of the most well-known fashion houses in the business: Georgio Armani, Anne Klein, Perry Ellis and most recently, Paco Rabanne.

Patrick's collection for Target is characterized as boho chic and includes warm weather pieces like loose cotton tanks, jersey dresses, tunics, shorts, cropped canvas vests and swimwear, all ranging from $13 to $45. What I am psyched about is the Mediterranean-inspired patterns in Patrick's collection, especially the Pleated Dress in Brown Medallion Print, $35. This would be Fab for my upcoming trip to Greece!

RIP: Donald Fisher, Co-Founder of the Gap

Our hearts go out to the friends and family of Donald Fisher, co-founder of the Gap, who died on Sunday, in San Francisco. Donald founded the American casual label we all know (and love), with his wife Doris in 1969. The company just celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Named for the “generation gap” between Baby Boomers and their parents, the Gap revolutionized retail - the Fishers were inspired by a frustrating shopping experience. The couple had difficulty exchanging an ill-fitting pair of jeans and couldn't find the right denim size with the assortment at local department stores. They opened the first Gap store in the foggy city, sales reached $2 million the following year, and the rest is retail history.

I just found out my dad met Don circa '72 - they did some business together. Don was wearing a denim Levi's suit that my dad coveted and ended up hunting down and buying for himself. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, eh?

With Creative Director Patrick Robinson creating new heat for the established brand, the Gap, and Don's denim doings, live on.

Most Hollywood parties require celebs to get all dressed up but not this one. To celebrate Gap's new 1969 Premium jeans collection, stars like Molly Sims, Emma Roberts, and Halle Berry got in their coolest denim and partied the night away at the Robertson Blvd. store.
