2011 Spring Milan Fashion Week: Emilio Pucci

This season, the signature psychedelic Pucci print is reworked for something equally fabulous. For Spring '11, the feel is feminized, softer in silhouettes, and has a muted palette. Fabrics float in dreamy, watercolor-inspired prints that feel more serene than in-your-face. Blue hues spotlight on peasant-style blouses, ruffled dresses, and a standout knit, embellished mini sheath, but designer Peter Dundas gives every color a moment - tan suede coats, brown and red prints, orange-toned separates, even black in sheer blouses and cutout maxis. We get a taste of the '70s, then something romantic and sultry emerges: crochet, cutouts, and lace-up tops and dresses dominate. Feminine but not girlie, bohemian and whimsically wearable - that's how Pucci played it.

Who Wore It Better? Pucci Beaded Snake Dress

When Zoe Saldana wore Pucci's Fall '09 beaded snake dress to the Star Trek premiere, she melted my heart. Or, shall I say, she electrocuted it. Her Brian Atwood Wicked shoes made everything even hotter. Sharon Stone must have seen the effect the dress had on Zoe, because she took the blue version with her to the Cannes Film Festival. She wore her dress with matching blue strappy sandals and a gold clutch. Both actresses pulled off Peter Dundas's galactic design, but who wore it better?

Fashion Metamorphosis: Emanuel Ungaro

Once the founding designer of a fashion house has retired, creative directors switch quicker than you can utter "fashion." Fine, it's not that quick, but it happens rather frequently. Emanuel Ungaro's long lasting empire is no exception. The French designer, who describes the Ungaro woman as sexy but not vulgar, ruled from the '70s up until Spring of '02, when he passed the torch along to Giambattista Valli.

Ungaro's woman has always been feminine, but rough around the edges, and Valli stuck to that notion. During his run (left), he delivered frilly, floral patterns with just enough dishevelment. When Valli stepped down in Spring '05, Peter Dundas, a self-proclaimed nightclub-lover, took over. With him, the Ungaro woman (center) turned fierce and slick with leather and sequins. But that didn't last long - apparently the house and Dundas didn't share the same view on where the label should be headed.

read more In December 2007, the current creative director of Ungaro's woman's line, 23-year-old Esteban Cortazar, stepped in. Under his guidance, the Ungaro woman (right) has rebelled from overly-feminine getups finding a home in asymmetrical and theatrical styles. Still, Cortazar hasn't turned his back on the original Ungaro gal. His Fall '08 collection sprinkled in ruffled dresses in subdued greys. We have yet to see how long this latest partnership will last. The changing of the fashion guards has left Ungaro with a very widespread past, but one thing's for sure: The Ungaro woman wears pink, embraces imperfection, and is proud to be a woman!

Pucci Spring 2012

Peter Dundas showed off his signature sexy aesthetic for Pucci's gypsy bohemian Spring collection, highlighting gorgeous printed gowns, sexy midriff tops, and curve-hugging minidresses. For daywear, Dundas highlighted wide-leg trousers and Bermuda shorts paired with printed tops along with sexier options, like a fitted red pencil skirt vamped up with a sheer lace blouse. However, it was the decadent, over-the-top ensembles which stole the show. The sheer organza skirts, made of the brand's archival prints, and handkerchief gowns were gorgeous showstoppers. There were also an abundance of pantie-baring sheer gowns leaving little to the imagination and a beautiful yellow long-sleeved embellished minidress. In Pucci's world, if you got it, flaunt it.

Trends: Midriff tops, handkerchief hemlines, peasant tops, ruffles, Bermuda shorts, sheer.
Colors: Black, yellow, pink, red, white.
Key Look: The handkerchief hem gown, the yellow minidress, and the printed organza skirts.
Accessories: Sexy strappy stilettos, layered cross necklaces, oversize earrings, textured clutches.
Who Would Wear It: Girls who aren't afraid to experiment with bold cuts and silhouettes like Zoe Saldana and Gwyneth Paltrow.
