Starbucks Rings In 40th Year With New Petites Line, Free Snacks

It's Starbucks's 40th birthday this month, and it's got plenty in store besides that brand-new logo. Starting today, the coffee giant is launching a massive anniversary marketing campaign that'll include print ads, TV commercials, in-store promotions, and product lines.

In addition to new brews - Starbucks Tribute Blend coffee and a Via version of the same blend - the corporation is also rolling out a new cocoa cappuccino. But bigger yet, it's globally launching Petites, a new line of eight baked goods and treats under 200 calories, including mini cupcakes, cake pops, and whoopie pies.

Starbucks's slogan? "It's our anniversary, but you get the presents." When customers buy drinks at stores between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, they'll also receive free Petites items.

Fab Body Guide: It's a Petite World

A Fab reader recently wrote in asking us to start PetiteSugar. Since that's not on the roster (but you never know...) we decided we could do a Fab Body Guide dedicated to petites.

I lightly touched on the subject with Rachel Bilson, but here are many more helpful tips on how to elongate your silhouette, accessories dos and don'ts, and online retail shops with stylish fashions for petites.

Tips on elongating your small frame:

Wearing similar colors, or monochrome, gives the illusion you're taller. It provides a continuous flow from one item of your outfit to the next.

When you don't want to wear all one color, just make sure the silhouette of your outfit is lengthening. For example, if you want to wear a fuchsia blouse with white pants, make sure the hem of the pants sweeps the floor, even with your high heels.
To avoid looking wide, stay away from horizontal stripes and colorblocking; you can certainly do skinny stripes though!
Another style that makes you appear wide is anything overly billowy, a la Nicole Richie's tiered mini dress. If you must dabble with the trend, steer clear of tiers.

To hear more advice about petite fashion and to see some Fab outfits we put together,

Speaking of creating continuous flow, make sure your shoes and tights are similar in color. A black outfit with a white shoe will chop up your leg and make you look stout.
Avoid super long tunics, especially if you're wearing a long skirt or pants. With a skirt that hits above the knee, mid-thigh grazing tops are a more acceptable. Also be wary of cropped jackets and tops - they don't call them cropped for nothing!
When wearing cropped or capri pants do like Sarah Jessica Parker and wear them with high heels.

Accessories Dos and Don'ts

Do wear pointed toe shoes because they are more lengthening than round toe.
Don't wear T-Straps, bows, or heavy buckles on your footwear because it creates a wide, chunky effect.
Do wear flats, but keep your outfit silhouette slim.
Do stay away from wide, colorful belts. If you're going to wear a belt, opt for a skinny one.

From My Kitchen: Chili Honey Butter

We've got a new partnership with Padma Lakshmi! The host of the Emmy-winning Top Chef, writer, and designer started Padma Lakshmi, a social networking site that celebrates our favorite topics, including food adventures, recipes, and party planning. She'll be dishing up goodies for us here on YumSugar monthly. Today, Padma sings the virtues of a lesser-known condiment: homemade chili honey butter.

Chili . . . honey . . . butter. Need I say more? It's actually dangerous to keep this condiment around because you will find yourself buttering your toast with it, frying up eggs with a bit of it melted in the pan, not to mention making home fries, too. And that's just breakfast. It can be used to sauté green beans and carrots, to brush on grilled fish, even to baste a whole chicken for roasting.

Why Did Susan G. Komen For the Cure Cut Off Funding to Planned Parenthood?

For years Susan G. Komen for the Cure has provided Planned Parenthood grants for breast cancer screenings. It recently decided to cut off the women's health provider, causing outrage among many supporters of both groups. Petitions to Komen to change its mind have been circulating on Facebook and across the Internet.

After Komen's decision became public, Planned Parenthood told supporters that "after facing pressure from anti-women's health political organizations, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has announced that it is ending future funding for lifesaving breast cancer screenings and breast health education at Planned Parenthood health centers." Supporters know Planned Parenthood provides crucial services besides abortion, and critics of Komen's choice to stop funding assert the irony of cutting off life-saving cancer screenings to show you're pro-life.

As evidence that the decision was politically motivated, women's health activists could point to a recent backlash against Komen from the Evangelical Christian group LifeWay. LifeWay was selling pink Bibles to benefit Komen, when it discovered the breast cancer group gave money to Planned Parenthood. LifeWay immediately pulled the Bibles, getting the attention of pro-life activists. In addition, Komen's founder and CEO, Nancy G. Brinker, is a longtime Republican with ties to the Bush family, and the foundation's newly hired vice president is a former politician with known pro-life positions. Also, Komen cited a controversial investigation of Planned Parenthood in Congress started by a staunchly pro-life member.

Even so, Susan G. Komen's founder and CEO maintained its decision to not fund organizations under investigation is part of a broad effort to reorganize donations and make them more efficient. See Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Nancy G. Brinker explain the foundation's decision below.
