DIY: Pimp Your Piping

Hey! I'm Liz (from It's Great To Be Home) and I did it, y'all: I pimped my piping. Remember this guy that looked so very sad? Well, now he’s had a makeover and he’s ready to strut his stuff. For only about $4, here’s how I gave this chair a major makeover:

Pick your victim. In my case, this slipcovered Ikea Ektorp armchair was the obvious choice; the all-white slipcover was pretty blah, and the oversized/overstuffed nature of the chair made it look like a big marshmallow. Bottom line: you’ll get the biggest impact with a piece of upholstery that has piping and could benefit from a little definition. (Of course, this same technique could be used to add pizzazz to just about anything you want to tackle.) Continue reading to see the rest of the steps.

Trend Alert: Posh Piping

The first whiff of warm weather has everyone in a tizzy - even Kate Moss! The Super was spotted in Paris looking colorfully chic in a nautical-inspired ensemble. I love how she ditched her per-usual black separates for a striped top and red jacket complete with posh piping. This slick trimming can be found almost everywhere via skirts, pants, jackets, dresses, shorts, and bags. Like Kate, I prefer my piping up top. The navy trim on her punchy jacket provides the ultimate eye-catching contrast.

Casa Quickie: Wrap It Up

Photographer Todd Selby recently toured the NYC apartment of music label director Keith Abrahamsson and stylist Kate Young, which is simply too cool for school. Under a backdrop of warm grays, the digs have plenty of high-quality furniture with interesting shapes and artsy elements, but the thing I love the most is that each room has something subtle and creative to notice.

In the bathroom, I thought the couple was so clever to wrap an ugly pipe with rope (or twine) to lend it a more organic, less industrial look. Especially in cities, many of us are plagued with old piping and other things we'd like to hide. So it could be a useful trick for many of you. The material is really versatile and can work with different aesthetics; you needn't just have a nautical theme. What do you think?

The Look For Less: Balenciaga Piped Blazer

We all fell in love with Balenciaga's Fall 2007 collection, especially the standout piped blazers. How could we resist? They are so hard to say no to. What is particularly amazing about these blazers is that they have the ability to make a casual outfit instantly chic and high fashion. Too bad we'd have to pay an arm, a leg and a soul for them.

read more I fell so deeply in love with this J.Crew Double-Face Wool Lexington Jacket, $250, that I went ahead and bought it last weekend! You should follow suit because it's as Balenciaga as it gets. The white piping is stunning and it comes in camel and gray also. The good news is that you'll get your money's worth because it's a classic style that will stay around for many seasons (and years!).

n. Decorative edging made by sewing a fold of bias fabric usually over narrow cording, to the edge. Generally of contrasting color. Usually found on handbags and shoes, but also applies to clothing.

The Look For Less: Pierre Hardy Side Buckle Duffle

Pierre Hardy's bags, like this Side Buckle Duffle, $1,245, are unique - in a good way. And actually, Cameron just carried a similar Pierre Hardy bag. I adore the contrasting leather detail but don't fancy the extravagant price.

read more Ho hum...I was strolling through Nine West over the weekend and all of a sudden I was faced with this Linneus Medium Satchel, on sale for $35 (originally $75). My look for less light bulb flashed and I couldn't wait to share. I know the colors are inverted but it's a pretty good resemblance. And the best part? It's on sale!

Meet Me in Moscow: A Russian Food Primer

Whenever you're complaining about the ferocity of Winter, just remember things are much, much colder in other parts of the world. But while Russian Winters may be brutal, they've got plenty of amazing, comforting recipes with flavors designed to take that chill out of your bones. It's time to call up your babushka, put on your copy of Doctor Zhivago, and grab a tall glass of vodka, if you see fit! It's time to get reading about the delicious dishes Russian cuisine has to offer.

Dishes:

Solyanka: The base of the spicy and sour solyanka soup consists of pickled cucumbers with brine, cabbage, mushrooms, sour cream, and dill. It's either served with meat, fish, or mushrooms.
Pirozhki : Pirozhki are small buns that are stuffed typically with a savory filling and then baked or fried. Some typical fillings include meat, onion, eggs, mashed potatoes, or cabbage.
Stroganov: Beef stroganov, or stroganoff, is cooked up in many a cafeteria today, but this recipe originated in Russia. It's typically pieces of beef served up in a sour cream-based sauce on top of egg noodles.
Blini: These thin, crepelike pancakes are enjoyed with either a savory or sweet topping. As opposed to the French crepe, blinis are made from buckwheat and are part of traditional Russian cuisine.
Borscht: Soups are a staple of a traditional Russian diet. And borscht is the czar of these soups. While it's served up cold in many restaurants in the US, traditionally borscht, primarily made of beets, is served piping hot.
Vatrushka: This traditional Russian dessert is a big ring of flaky pastry dough with cottage cheese in the center. Similar to a delicious American-style Danish, it's typically topped off with raisins or bits of fruit.

Staples:

Smetana (sour cream): Blinis are topped off with it. Soups utilize its flavor. It's even used in dessert recipes! In short, expect to find fresh and delicious sour cream accompanying just about Russian ration you eat.
Black bread: The dark, crusty, hearty rye bread is served alongside many a Russian dish.
Ikra (caviar): Briny caviar is a definite splurge in the US, but in Russia, you can find caviar far more often on a table. It's often served with blinis or atop black bread.

The Wide World of Wings: Lemon Pepper With Cucumber-Feta Yogurt Sauce

We close out our week of worldly wings with a recipe . . . with an accessory. While I love this classic finger food on its own, sometimes a cooling dipping sauce is just what the tailgater ordered to complement a piping hot and/or fiery chicken wing. Think about it: buffalo wings are divine, but when that Frank's RedHot sauce becomes too hot to handle, nothing quenches a mouth inferno quite like some blue cheese dressing.

While this recipe forgoes a spicy wing in favor of a tangy lemon-pepper vinaigrette, it's merely a vehicle for the velvety yogurt dipping sauce. Creamy feta and soothing cucumber serve to heighten the cooling sensation, making it a great addition to a wing buffet side by side with its hotter cousins. Get the recipe.

Golden Globes: Elle Macpherson

Elle Macpherson may just be aging backwards. The supermodel stunner arrived at the Golden Globe Awards showing off her enviable figure in a body-hugging Zac Posen gown. Piping and detailing at the bodice highlighted her form, while a fishtailed tulle train amped up the drama - but she didn't hold back on accessories either. Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan Talk About the Future of How I Met Your Mother

CBS focused on its current shows during the Winter TCA, bringing out comedy How I Met Your Mother, which is currently in its seventh season. Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan were the only actors present today, but they had plenty to say, along with series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. They talked about what's next for Marshall and Lily and their new little family, Robin's recent revelation, and the perennial question about when we'll meet the mother.

Though no one gave us anything concrete about the mother, Bays insisted, "we know what the end game of the series is." Segel piped up to say that he was "so relieved when I found out there was an actual plan," and then joked about it, implying that it might be the apocalypse before we find out: "We have to see if the Mayans are right! It might be Dec. 21, 2012."
Bays and Thomas answered the question of whether Marshall and Lily are really moving permanently to their suburban home by saying that we're all about to find out. Thomas said that we're "going to see them deal with that" in the next few episodes.
Fans weren't the only ones irritated with the show faking us out with Robin's kids. Hannigan recounted, "You should have seen us at the table read. I was like, season pass delete!" But she said she was angry because she cared so much.
On the show's evolution, Thomas mentioned that they couldn't have done storylines like Marshall losing his dad in season one or two. For his part on that arc, Segel said that "it was a real honor" to be given the chance to play out Marshall's grief, and echoed that "it's a real honor when people ask the best of you."
