The plaid top itself screams '90s but leave it to Kirsten to put icing on the cake with her signature Ray-Ban Wayfarers and messy hair. When wearing grunge garb, make sure to keep something loose and something fitted - wrinkles optional!

I have three, and counting. Even though little plaid jackets feel so right in the Winter, a lighter weight one, or a freshly colored one, can translate for Spring, too. Who's that girl in her LPJ? Why it's the always-adorable Christina Ricci. She teamed hers with skinny jeans, cat-eye sunnies, and a luscious gray Chanel bag. Not too shabby. A look that works for both the city and the country - and the road trip in between.

Leave it to The Hills hottie Kristin Cavallari to make a regular plaid shirt look smokin'! The reality starlet shopped on Melrose wearing an Elizabeth and James plaid shirt, black skinny jeans, and Louboutin pumps. Ray Ban Wayfarers shielded her from the paps, while her Alexander Wang bag stashed all her cash. Her look is a testament to the fact that simplicity can have a major impact.

We can all agree that $250 for a plaid button-down top is too much. Such was the case with Lauren Conrad's cute, albeit overpriced, Elizabeth and James shirt. Alas, plaid is already on the move to becoming a Fall frenzy, so get ahead of the trend on the cheap. I do, however, recommend teaming your plaid shirt with foxy high heels a la LC - this takes the look from totally geek to totally chic.

My all-time fave designer Marc Jacobs came out with his own version of the red plaid nylon shopping bag earlier in the year. But did you know he was most probably inspired by the original $2 Chinatown nylon plaid shopping bags? Needless to say, Marc is the one who made it cool to carry one of these puppies to the grocery store, or on your coffee run. But is it really worth paying a fortune for a nylon bag when you can get it for under $5?

This Pearl River Nylon Plaid Shopping Bag, $2-$6, is nearly identical to the Marc Jacobs version, except it doesn't come with a brand name. There are various sizes and colors, and considering how cheap it is, you can get one of each. Not only will you look super stylin' when shopping for groceries, you'll also be helping the environment by not relying on disposable plastic bags.

The Look For Less: Thakoon Plaid Crop Pant

The mad plaider is coming but fear not, plaid doesn't have to look '90s grungy (unless you want it to). Take these Thakoon Mao Pants ($595), for example. Refined, tailored, and perfect for those chilly Fall days, but at half a grand, I think it's better that I save that money for my heating bill . . .

These Bebe Window Plaid Cuffed Crop Pants ($118) have the same clean appeal as Thakoon's but without the PG&E price. Also, the black and white color scheme makes it easier to mix and match. With all that saved money, I can buy a new pair of tights and shoes to complete my outfit!

It's bound to happen. Everyone starts to hibernate as the days get shorter and the temp gets colder. However, that's no excuse to dress drab. I suggest making your Winter retreat a fashionable one via buffalo plaid, sherpa-lined denim, laced boots, and boyfriend jeans. Think Paul Bunyan, or rather, Paulina Bunyan, when styling your warm warfare. Now, all I need is a cabin, fireplace, hot cocoa, and a snuggly stud muffin.
