Designer Suki Cheema Thinks Spring With His Indonesia Collection

Designer Suki Cheema is renowned for his intuitive, in-depth understanding of pattern, textiles, and printmaking, which has landed him positions with Calvin Kelin, Ralph Lauren, and Diane von Furstenberg. In fact, it was Diane von Furstenberg who inspired Suki to follow his dreams of launching his own line. With SUKI CHEEMA, an exclusive collection of home and personal accessories, Suki marries his love of art, textiles, and travel. The line includes throw pillows, quilts, rugs, tabletop items, handbags, and more, all featuring hand silk-screened prints and embroidery techniques that are centuries old.

I recently caught up with Suki to discuss his latest collection, Indonesia and found out his thoughts on printmaking and pattern, Spring decorating, and inspirations.
CasaSugar: What inspired the Indonesia collection specifically?

Suki Cheema: A trip to Indonesia some time ago. I was most inspired by the Batik designs from Java. Batik is unique to Indonesia and is one of its most traditional art forms. It has a special place in the culture and history of the people. My color choices for the collection were also influenced by Indonesia. You will see lots of indigo and shades of blue throughout the collection with pops of scarlet and other bright colors.
CS: How did you develop the patterns for this collection?

SC: During my trip I collected lots of batik fabrics and took photographs of everything that caught my eye. I like to take inspiration from traditional things and give them a modern twist, which is exactly what I did for this collection. I play with the scales and dimensions of patterns and reform things so that the inspiration is just that and not a literal interpretation.

Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Fendi joined forces to create an apocalyptic-chic collection for Fall 2012 - the wintery, forest-inspired vibe was evident, as models walked the runway in luxe layers of patent PVC and colored fur, looking gorgeously aggressive and ready for battle. Most of the pieces looked as if they had been literally cut from different cloths - oversize fur coats with contrasting sleeves, leather dresses with pleated bustles and wide corset belts, and tailored coats with cowhide bibs - all fashioned in a woodsy color palette of greens, navies, and neutrals. Models' makeup was left mostly natural, save for white wings painted on their eyelids to mimic Lagerfeld's "snow on branches" aesthetic, and hairstylist Sam McKnight created strong, severe coifs to further lend to the collection's Victorian warrior princess vibe. Charlotte Ronson showed off warm, gorgeous color on an urban-cool collection for Fall 2012. She delivers both sophistication and cool-girl edge in the same breath, working graphic print, slick leather, and a brilliant palette onto slim knits paired with menswear-inspired trousers. We get a little of the designer's après-ski influence on a fresh reinterpretation of Winter knits done in cool camel and yellow. But it's mostly Ronson's eye for balancing downtown street-chic with uptown polish we love; how she gives us both a sharpness and a sense of femininity that's entirely wearable.

We just got our hands on the Jason Wu for Target lookbook, showing the line in its 53-piece entirety. The "gamine chic" collection, inspired by French new-wave films, drops online and in stores on Feb. 5 featuring a range of pieces reflecting girlie nuances with a fresh twist via crisp peplum tops, sweet floral-print dresses, Peter Pan collars, and pleated skirts. Striped colorblocking, sheer floaty blouses, and chic structured totes and handbags were also a focal point in the line. "I wanted the collection to have a sophisticated voice with an American sportswear spin,” said Wu. The best part? Everything is priced under $60. This is a collection we can't wait to shop. 2011 Autumn London Fashion Week: Mulberry

Mulberry transformed Claridges into the English countryside this morning for the Autumn '11 show. The collection stayed true to the great outdoors with traditional heritage fabrics and ladylike ensembles. There were plenty of pleated midi length skirts in a range of eye popping colours including green. Since it was Mulberry, all eyes were on the accessories which included the new Polly pushlock which is sure to be the brands next it-bag. A lot of the bags had top handles and gold hardware adding to the ladylike feel of the ensembles, although they were still quite bulky. The show attracted a celebrity audience including Kirsten Dunst and Gemma Arterton.

Trends: Heritage, midi length, pleats, mixed textures.
Colours: Khaki, metallic, green, lilac, dark blue.
Key Looks: Long, pleated metallic dress.
