I can never tire of the sexy librarian look. Is it the soft long cardigans? Or maybe it's the notion that you don't have to show a lot of skin to look sexy. Whatever it is, this look paired with some high heels, a la Burberry Prorsum's Resort collection, seems to do the trick. Note how soft fabrics and high heels keep you from looking frumpy, and yes, socks are optional!

The differences between a juicy red patent handbag and a super slick black bag are three-fold.

Black is mysterious; red is in-your-face.
Black is sophisticated. Red patent bags can teeter between sophisticated and déclassé. I prefer darker hues; when the red is too bright it's too much.
Black is safe(er). A red patent bag is for the super confident woman. Are you ready for one?

Speaking of confidence. The red metallic Bottega below is beyond patent. I can't decide if it's sophisticated or déclassé. You tell me. Never, have I seen a bolder Bottega.

By combining two of the season's slickest styles, Fab reader Stylesbyassitan nailed the cool-girl look with a shiny-cum-sporty twist. First, she paired her silver metallic skinny jeans with a red knit topper. Then she added an athletic accent via her retro, two-toned varsity jacket. For the outfit finale, she donned black pointy-toed pumps and toted a boxy, black patent-leather bag. It's a no-frills look with a lot of street cred.

Marni Fall 2012

Marni designer Consuelo Castiglioni showed a world of colorblock, structured silhouettes, and small-scale prints for Fall 2012. '60s mod styling got a dose of Eastern influence on the runway - models were clad in bright shift dresses, trousers, and skirt suits, almost always topped with a boxy coat and cinched at the waist with wide leather belts. The designer also offered up slick coats in luxe exotic looks like python, patent leather, and plaid-print furs, which proved visually stunning alongside head-to-toe black and gold jacquard and floral-print ensembles. Hopefully, you haven't tired of the hosiery trend yet; white tights were layered under each look (even pants), then finished with Kabuki-style platform Mary Janes for a vaguely Oriental feel. Raf Simons bowed out at Jil Sander with a soft pastel palette and minimalist silhouettes for Fall 2012. His finale - a modest showing of femininity in truly modern proportion - was met with a standing ovation. The trick was subtlety in both color play and the measure of each silhouette - colors were rich, but soft; cutouts were sexy, but never overt. There was grace and balance in every look. We're treated to evening wear in sporty-cum-sexy corsetted cocktail dresses, with a flash of patent that feels fresh and ladylike, never offensive; while tops are cut with lingerie-inspired, body-conscious detailing that's all at once provocative and elegant. The collection as a whole walks that line between innovation and restraint: a flash of metallics, an oversize powder pink coat. Each piece works in perfect balance delivering, above all, wearability. Jil Sander has some big shoes to fill when she returns to take the helm next season.

Roberto Cavalli may have mixed things up a bit for the Fall 2012 showing of his bridge line, Just Cavalli, but the collection wasn't without the designer's signature rock 'n' roll sensibilities. Models were outfitted in super-skinny trousers, mixed-media-style frocks (think houndstooth and ocelot, zebra-print and Aztec zigzags), and playfully sexy Lurex tops, lending a vibrant, lighthearted '60s spin on an otherwise rocker-cool runway show. Cavalli did bring some new silhouettes into the picture, however - he showed sleek, slouchy patent-leather pants in hues of nude, red, and gray and also introduced a tailored, oversize menswear-inspired coat with leather lapels. Moschino Fall 2012

It's always a rollicking good time to look at a Moschino show, and the Fall 2012 collection brings us a quirky mix of styles - military, ski, '60s - all filtered through the Moschino prism of color and indulgent detail. Short, flirty dresses were outfitted with feathers and abundant ruffles, capes and jackets were outfitted with military epaulettes, capes featured quilted fronts, and skirts were unabashedly mini - forget all the ladylike midi lengths we've been seeing on the runways elsewhere. Bright poppy colors on structured minis and coats harkened to the '60s. The Moschino lady is one who still loves dressing up the way she did in high school, stealing her chic mother's clothes and wearing them all at once in a jubilant mix. It's never too serious, which is why it continues to be so much fun.

Michelle Smith showed a fun collection brimming with color and cool techno fabrics for Milly's Fall line. The results? A prim and polished collection injected with modern fabrics and a bit of edge. Tweed dresses were given a shiny finish thanks to a high-tech laminated finish, while full leather skirts lent a feminine feel. A wide array of cocktail-ready dresses were the main focus, ranging from scalloped hemlines to strapless neon and lace confections. Tory Burch's Fall collection was inspired by "the idea of a prim girl who's under the spell of the wrong kind of guy." The results? An array of prim and polished looks injected with just the right amount of librarian girl sexiness. Sultry lace dresses showcased embellished collars, peplum tops were adorned with sequins, and pencil skirts were decorated with frilly hemlines. Burch also gave new life to tweed and tartan; a pair of knockout leather tweed-printed pants were the highlight of the show. With rouge lips and heels to echo his bold red leather and pink color pairings, Thakoon honed in on a dramatic palette and rich detail to deliver a feminine Fall '12. We expect Thakoon Panichgul to veer toward the ethnically themed; this time, he steered clear of more exotic references to focus on a re-imagining of ladylike charm. Demure silhouettes were manipulated in patent, colored leather, ruching, and covered in rich hues of Mongolian fur to ensure that every look fell outside the boundaries of "pretty" dressing. There's quirk and humor in every take - a playful pop of print on the collar of a camel coat or a fuchsia fuzzy to complete a sweetheart-take on colorblocking. But if you don't subscribe to the girly-girl look, Thakoon's Fall is not also without sexier side; whether it's an overt nod to sex appeal with a black patent dress or a subtler play in a slinky black halter, there's a sense of womanly dressing even in all his girlish references.
