We've all received the readily available red roses and baby's breath bouquet at some point in our lives. While the romantic gesture of gifting flowers is always appreciated, the slightly dated look of this combination is often not. The divide and conquer strategy applies perfectly to this situation. With a little snipping and the right vessel, this tired arrangement can actually look chic and surprisingly modern.

To achieve the look, snip the stems off of the roses and cluster them tightly together in a cylinder-shaped, clear glass vase. For even more drama, add a votive candle so that light bounces off of the glass and water. The effect is undeniably sexy and completely unexpected.

Today, let's go bold and vibrant: mix-and-match cool color combos.

The best part about colorblocking is, hands down, its endless potential for fun, playful, and totally unexpected color matchups. This may be a good time to brush up on the ol' color wheel. Some of our favorite complementary pairings are: minty green with bright tangerine, deep violet with saffron yellow, and neon pink with crimson red.
Use these color combos to emphasize your shape and your strong knowledge of silhouette proportions. We love seeing contrasted hues against a long-short hem or in the mix of soft vs. hard structural edges.
To execute this look, it takes almost no effort at all. Find your favorite colorful pieces and pair 'em up. The effect is striking, but super simple to achieve. Whether it's a colorblocked sweater-and-jeans combo or a sweet juxtaposition of a bold dress over opaque tights, it's a zippy way to spice up a look.

Charlotte Ronson showed off warm, gorgeous color on an urban-cool collection for Fall 2012. She delivers both sophistication and cool-girl edge in the same breath, working graphic print, slick leather, and a brilliant palette onto slim knits paired with menswear-inspired trousers. We get a little of the designer's après-ski influence on a fresh reinterpretation of Winter knits done in cool camel and yellow. But it's mostly Ronson's eye for balancing downtown street-chic with uptown polish we love; how she gives us both a sharpness and a sense of femininity that's entirely wearable.

Our New York Fashion Week kickoff began this morning with Steven Alan. For Fall, the designer showed another batch of covetable casual-cum-cool offerings pairing his signature modern classic style with a bold touch of Mexican and folk influence. Full red skirts were paired with riding jackets and fedora hats and structured striped wool vests with slightly flared pants, and there was even a cute vintage-inspired tweed jumpsuit styled with a button-up blouse and cardigan. For a soft touch, the designer also supplied sweet peplum-embellished floral and striped dresses, plaid shirt dresses, and, for a little shine, black and gold brocade dresses and trousers. Scarlett Johansson was in a tight Calvin Klein gown for this evening's Golden Camera Awards in Berlin. The ceremony is Germany's equivalent of the Oscars, and it comes about three weeks before France's prestigious Césars occur on Feb. 24. During the ceremony, The Avengers star Scarlett accepted the best international actress honor from German star Til Schweiger. The corresponding male honor went to Denzel Washington, who's been in Europe promoting his upcoming thriller Safe House.

Scarlett posed on the red carpet solo, though back home in NYC, she's been all about spending time with her new boyfriend. Scarlett Johansson's dating Nate Naylor, a Big Apple advertising consultant. Their relationship, which has been going strong for a reported five months, became public when they took a loved-up stroll last week.
