Are Toning Shoes For You?

It all started with MBT, then Sketchers introduced the Shape-ups, and after that, I feel like I lost count of all the toning shoes being introduced to the fitness world. When the American Council on Exercise (ACE) investigated the fitness claims associated with these types of shoes, they found that "none of the toning shoes showed statistically significant increases in either exercise response or muscle activation." While some people love them; others feel they are just another pair of sneaks. Have you tried out a pair of these toning shoes pictured below? What was your experience?

Eva Mendes is literally following in the footsteps of Helena Christensen. Earlier this week, Reebok introduced Eva as the new face (and body) of its EasyTone ad campaign. In a joint press release, the actress said, "I feel better when I’m in good shape, and that’s what I like about Reebok EasyTone - it gives me a little extra as I go about my daily activities."

Ashlee, Anna, and Rosario Make Toning Look Easy

Reebok had some star power on hand to debut its newest line of fitness footwear and apparel this week, including its latest EasyTone offerings. Young Hollywood starlets Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Anna Kendrick, Rosario Dawson, Emmy Rossum, and Lindsay Price showed off the latest gear and worked out with celeb trainer Yumi Lee at a private residence in Los Angeles. At the event, Ashlee told E! that she used Reebok EasyTone shoes to lose the 50 pounds she gained while pregnant with baby Bronx.

"When I wanted to get back into shape, I worked out and these shoes are amazing because you can really feel them in your booty. But I also worked out and ate healthy."

While I am a little skeptical of the toning powers of EasyTone sneakers, I am loving that Anna used bottles of laundry detergent as hand weights - I'm trying this trick myself! It looks like celebs are loving the fitness events lately, because in the last few weeks we also saw Lo Bosworth, Kat Von D, Lindsay Lohan, and Audrina Patridge working out in support of Muscle Milk and Under Armour.

Easy on the Eyes: Helena Christensen in Only Easy Tones

Reebok doesn't shy away from sexy and controversial ads. But they have moved away from the eye-catching headline "Make Your Boobs Jealous!" campaign featuring talking breasts, to a double-take-inducing shot of supermodel Helena Christensen completely bare, except for her shoes. The irony of her shod nakedness doesn't escape the model, who recently spoke with Bella. Of the new ad, Helena said, ". . . we did actually a lot of other shots with clothes on, but I don’t think anyone has actually seen those shots yet. (laughs) It’s sort of this one that gets the attention, and I can totally see the humor in that - naked, wearing sneakers."

When not sculpting her backside wearing Easy Tones, Helena lends her support to bra maker Bali to raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Fund. I am thinking her toned derriere might have good reason to be jealous of her breasts?

read more. When it comes to food, Helena has a healthy appetite and loves cheese, explaining, "I eat a lot and I eat a lot of different foods. I eat a lot of dairy products. I don’t hold myself back in any way, and then, I just work out." Like other foodie celebs, it came down to this self-imposed question for her: "'Do you want to keep eating this much your whole life, and not move that much? Or do you want to cut back on your food intake?' And I decided that absolutely not. I would just literally not exist if I couldn’t eat the way I do." In order to feast on cheese, Helena boxes because it "keeps your metabolism fast, your heart rate up, and that way, I can keep eating the way I like to eat." But her workouts are more than a calorie-burning exercise; she does them for her mental state too. "You know life can be very confusing, and nowadays the way we live, it’s very easy to stress and feel anxious about so many things, that the only time we relax is when we sleep or work out. You kind of distract yourself from everything else because you're doing something that physically demands your attention." Her philosophy is flexible too; she advocates listening to your body. "I feel like your body requests certain things at certain times. Sometimes, you feel like you really need to eat more vegetables right now, more salads, and other times, it just asks for burgers all the time (laughs)." What has your body been asking for lately? If you are a fashion addict, then no doubt you are already a fan of Gilt Groupe, which sells designer duds at way cheaper prices through its two websites, Gilt and Gilt Fuse. In a sea of words, a title like "Make Your Boobs Jealous!" really jumps out at you - something I can attest to after coming across these new ads for Reebok EasyTone.

If these shoes do what Reebok claims, the shoes themselves seem pretty neat - balance pods create natural instability in your step, which forces muscles to adapt and encourages toning in the butt, legs, and thighs. So far, so good, but as my buddy Très points out, the ads focus mostly on two talking breasts!

On its website, Reebok claims that its new line of EasyTone shoes, which are displayed against the backdrop of a naked woman, will help you make 88 percent of men speechless and 76 percent of women jealous. Hoping to drum up some hype for these kicks, Reebok has also unveiled a whole slew of commercials touting the shoes' butt-toning abilities. In this commercial, Reebok pitches the shoes by reducing a faceless woman to two talking breasts. You see, the breasts are jealous of the woman's butt, which is now getting all the attention thanks to the shoes. Do you find this ad effective or offensive?

Elisabeth Hasselbeck's NFL Maternity Line: Ga Ga or Gag?
