Suzy Menkes Disapproves of Revivals and Marc Jacobs

When we heard International Herald Tribune fashion writer Suzy Menkes was going to speak at the Academy of Art University San Francisco, we decided we must get ourselves there, even though technically we're not students. But really - isn't one always a student of fashion? I think so . . . We really wanted to get to know Ms. 32,000-words-per-year Suzy in a more personal way. Not only did we make small talk (she reads Fab!), we discovered her sense of humor and grew more impressed with her every word. During the discussion, Suzy touched on the green movement, luxury, Karl Lagerfeld, and reminisced about the past. More to come on those, but first I want to share her thoughts about fashion revivals and Marc Jacobs.

On the subject of referencing other designers or the past, Suzy said she's "tired of revivals." For example, she has no aesthetic problem with big shoulders - a la Balmain - but to her they're forced because they don't stand for anything like they did in the past, when women donned big shoulders to let men know that they were shoulder to shoulder with them. To make matters juicier, Suzy was forthright about her disapproval of Marc Jacobs when he created an entire collection based on a 1991 Bruce Weber photograph. Ouch, but we all know Suzy and Marc are no strangers to quarrels. Do you agree with her that revivals are lame or is she being overly critical?

Nicky Hilton's Spring 2008 collection for her line, Chick by Nicky Hilton, is retro with a modern twist. This apple print halter mini dress is one of the many cutesy pieces Paris' little sis designed. Although apples aren't one of my favorite fruits (I mean does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?), I would wear this frock because it's lighthearted, fun and super girly. Get Your Own Mad Men-Inspired Wardrobe!

I know I'm not the only one obsessed with Mad Men. Not only is the plot juicy, but so are the clothes. I've already checked out Banana Republic's inspired pieces, made my own stylish Mad (Wo)Men, and hopefully soon, I can get retro designs from Mad Men's costume designer, Janie Bryant! “I love fashion as it allows us each to express our creativity and I love capturing the essence of an era through costume design,” says Janie. “Now I am looking forward to bringing that retro style to today's wardrobes.” Launch details are TBD, but we do know Janie is set to design a modern '60s-inspired line of men’s and women’s apparel, lingerie, swimwear, home, footwear and accessories. It's a mad, mad world . . .

Sneak Peek! Stella McCartney Intimates, Spring '10

Last Spring's Stella McCartney lingerie offering was colorful, but this time around, the designer is feeling softer with neutral pales, dusty pinks, and lavender. There are 15 groups, each with a cheeky name like Rosie Plotting, Eva Scampering, and Billie Twirling. "This season we looked at the '20s and '50s, which comes through the range in silhouette and specially developed embroidery and gold retro hardware," McCartney said. Look forward to prints like florals, feathers, and ladybugs, and fabrics like tulle, mesh, and silk crepe de chine. Prices range from $45 to $195 - the Spring '10 line will land at Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys New York, and Bloomingdale’s.

Fabworthy: Retro Swimwear at Urban Outfitters

For being such a fashion fiend, I don't have that many bathing suits. I don't blame myself for my lack of swimwear; I blame swimsuit designers. So many bathing suits look like clones of one another; they're either triangle top, skimpy, tacky - or all of the above.

When Urban Outfitters announced its retro swim collection, I breathed a sigh of relief. I can finally invest in demure, girlie swimwear that doesn't make me look like I'm trying to shove my body in the face of the world. There are so many to pick from, but one of my favorites is this Lux Lollipop Floral Swimsuit ($98) because it's inexpensive and has darling cap sleeves.
