I've never seen a more polished-at-all-times group of people than Italians. I can always spot Italian tourists thanks to their spot-on style. Of course, Prada, Giorgio Armani, Missoni, Gianni Versace, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana are hugely responsible for that. But Italian Fashion Now by Maria Luisa Frisa ($14) dishes about the new rising stars of Italian fashion now. Giambattista Valli, Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy), Stefano Pilati (Yves Saint Laurent) are just a few. The book is currently on pre-order and will be released February, 10, 2010.

Fab Ad: Givenchy Fall/Winter '09

Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci feels "It’s important to give reality to women," hence why he's decided to take a more realistic approach to his Fall/Winter '09 ad campaign. "I wanted to give this feeling of going from a studio to reality." To be precise, this reality is set inside a gilded bedroom in the Château de Ferrières. A not-so-obvious change: He's gone from using photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for nine seasons to Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Also unlike the past, the ad uses color photography and features new models - his favorite, Mariacarla Boscono is still in the mix but the most surprising addition is Victoria's Secret model Adriana Lima. 2009 Spring Couture: Givenchy

Riccardo Tisci always brings raw sexuality to the runway. But I'm not talking Victoria's Secret sexy, I'm talking S&M sexy. For Spring couture, the designer continued to play with bold cuts, but he also incorporated sweet fabrics; that contradictory fusion is sure to fly off the racks. I smell some Oscar-worthy red carpet looks for the risk-takers too! Anne Hathaway, if you're listening, the asymmetrical floral gown is all you.
There are many parts to this Givenchy tale - asymmetry is one of them. Long and short dresses came in one-shoulder styles, as well as with crazy asymmetrical details. Cocoon shapes also dominated on frocks and skirt suits. Sheer fabrics managed to balance sexy and sweet, and puff shoulders continued their run. Tisci loves black, white, and beige, but he also threw in neon yellow, lavender, and icy blue for contrast. Let's just put it this way . . . don't dare wear these clothes if you're in a silly mood. These are serious.

Madonna Gets Sticky and Sweet

We revealed sketches of Madonna's Sticky and Sweet tour costumes, and now that the tour is underway, let's see them come to life. The list of designers who worked on the singer's wardrobe and accessories includes Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, Tom Ford, Miu Miu, Stella McCartney, Moschino, Roberto Cavalli, Jeremy Scott, and Yves Saint Laurent. Whew! I'll let you judge their creations for yourself, but it's important to note that the color palette is mainly black with spritzes of color. Expect lots of leather, sky-high boots, and booty-revealing cuts. Madge wouldn't have it any other way.

Fall 2007 Couture: Givenchy

Chubby furs, neutral colors, and whirls of fabric and feathers - that's what Givenchy couture is made of.

As a relatively young designer compared to the others who helm the great French couture houses of Dior and Chanel, Riccardo Tisci is still finding himself within the bounds of the House of Givenchy legacy. However, he is starting to pull together a few signature elements: the puffball skirt, the smoke-like frothy long skirt, the piecey satin dress.

And there is something very young, very raw, very edgy about how Mr. Tisci does couture. These are the kinds of qualities vital to keeping the practice of couture, which is so steeped in rules and tradition, modern and alive for both the present and the future.

No matter what Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci serves up, it's always bound to be ahead of the curve. His latest Fall '09 collection, however, is also simultaneously beautiful, thanks to feather-infested gowns and romantic draping. But it wouldn't be Givenchy if it didn't throw together a mumbo jumbo of anomalies: studs and feathers, sheer and draping, asymmetry and power suits. The color palette is minimal, per usual - black, white, cream - but the silhouettes are anything but.

Pant suits were decked out in plush feathers, draped blouses were more interesting via rope details, LBDs were characterized by crazy draping, sheer blouses were given leather arms. You get the picture? There's more. Draped dresses bedazzled with studs, military style coats covered with fur, and strong shoulders. That's the world of Givenchy in a nutshell - so simple, yet painstakingly complicated.

The Look For Less: Givenchy Multi-Layer Chain Necklace

Her Madge-esty looked fittingly regal and gothic when she recently donned Givenchy's multi-layer chain necklace from his Fall collection. Something about the combination of all-black and heavy Mr. T-style chains is seriously lethal, in a good way. We can thank the brand's designer Riccardo Tisci for injecting feminine goth into our closets. Now if only said injection didn't bruise our bank accounts so badly . . .

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this Marciano Cynthia Multi-Layer Cross Necklace ($198), because it meant I could look designer but not adopt its spending habits. True, the price tag isn't cheap, but it beats paying thousands for the real deal. The way I see it, it's an investment necklace, and will be worth every penny when you get compliments left and right.
