At its best, exercise should be effective and fun, because if you don't enjoy it, you aren't likely to keep it up. While we mock some old-school fitness techniques and trends, there are lessons and moves to be learned from popular exercise trends of the past. (Think Buns of Steel, The Firm, and Jane Fonda).

In celebration of these totally righteous retro workouts, we're spotlighting some classic and cool exercises that should never go out of style. First up is roller skating, which is a killer way to burn calories while listening to some hot tunes and shaking your grove thing. Need a reason to lace up your skates? What Kids Can Teach Us About Staying Fit

My godson taught me a pretty important lesson this weekend: hanging out with the adults at a playground is no fun. He had me running, jumping, and spinning - I was totally winded by the end of the day. This got me thinking that there's a lot we can apply to our own fitness regimen from the everyday activities of kids. For one - jump rope. Kids love jumping rope, and they do it without knowing what a great cardio workout it is. Here are some other kid-centric activities to get your heart rate up, and muscles long and lean.

I have taken up a new hobby: roller skating! Not too long ago I asked your help in finding a sexy, cute rollerskating outfit for a roller disco party I went to. You did, and here is Roller Fab! With super sore thighs the next day, I went and bought some skates because I was so inspired (the ones I wore were actually YumSugar's!). My fresh skates are white with purple wheels and laces - Fab, no? Shopbop's Retro Fever section got the disco ball and thus the wheels turning for me again, and I couldn't refuse putting together an even more glam roller look.

FABTV: De La Soul "Roller Skating Jam"

If you've been searching your whole life for a song to roller skate too, find salvation in De La Soul's tribute to the retro sport on wheels. Personally, I hate roller skating. Ok, ok, it's because I suck at it. But I'll take roller skating over ice skating because I have a morbid fear of falling on ice. Anywho, this jam has everything you need to get pumped for a good roller adventure: folks having fun, bright early '90s hip-hop style, and an all-around happy vibe - not to mention some fierce roller moves. I'll stay on the sidelines, but I always love me some fun-loving De La Soul.

P.S. I'm one of those roller snobs who thinks that wheels are way cooler than blades. But if you blade, check out Fit's bits all about it.

They're Bringing Skating Back: Urban Inline Skating Groups

Looking for something a little more active to do next Friday night?

Think about joining Friday Night Skate, which is a weekly group that meets every Friday night for a 10 mile skate (at a fairly easy pace), through some of the best streets in Santa Monica and West LA, then once a month through Hollywood including the Sunset Strip. What's more? There is music on the skate, usually in the form of a sound system strapped to one brave skater.

The best part is that you don't have to be an advanced skater to join our group, but you should have some experience. Along the skate, there are lots of cool rest stops which allows everyone to catch their breath and stay together. The last rest stop is usually where the skate dancing takes place (yup, skate dancing). Don't worry if you're not up on your skate dancing skills (I am not sure I would even have any), this is the part where the really talented skaters take stage and put on a good show.

Another cool skating group is Pari Roller, which is an 18.6 mile Friday night skate in Paris. In comparison to LA's skate group, Pari Roller is typically a group of over 5,000 skaters (complete with police escorts). It's a very cool site to see (pictured above).

5 Awesome Unexpected Things to See at Coachella

This weekend, I celebrated alongside thousands of others at the three-day Coachella Music festival. Held in Indio, California, it's one of the largest in the US with around 226,000 in attendance last year. This year, Intel sponsored my trip there - taking care of my accommodations, transportation, and nourishment - so that I could check out the Creators Project: a joint venture between Intel and Vice to promote independent artists who use technology in their art. I'll be talking more about the project in the next few days, but first: a few awesome things I wasn't expecting to find at Coachella.

Dancing robots and video games - Thanks to the Creator's Project, we were treated to home brew video games and 3D art. One artist built a computer program that allowed these robots to perform a dance routine in perfect unison. Check out the video!
A roller rink - Off the main drag of the main stage, we found a fun carnival tucked in with the Coachella campground. There was a full on roller rink (BYOS - bring your own skates), fun seesaws, swings, and an arcade. Be sure to bring lots of quarters if you ever go!
