Sass and Bide Shine On

"The human spirit will always aspire to shine . . . to taste the elixir of life, and to bathe in the glory of love." Nice. I am happy to report Sass and Bide designers, Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke, are celebrating 10 years in fashion by creating the Shine Initiative. They enlisted artsy, famous friends to create art pieces that interpret what "Shine" means. The result is a true mix of inspiration from the likes of Kate Moss, Twiggy, Mischa Barton, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, and Daisy Lowe. All the works can be viewed and bid on at sassandbide.com. Proceeds will fund creative counseling workshops for abused children, led by the designers, in both Britain and Australia. July 23 bidding continues at an event in London at The Dairy - I'm sure Moss will show up! Here are some of my favorite pieces from the initiative.

Trend Alert: Pretty Pastel Jeans

I can't wait to get my hands on a pair of pastel jeans. Why, you ask? Because blue jeans have had their hurrah and it's time for something new. You might be feeling some resistance but think of all the pretty hues you can choose from. Light lavender, pink, sky blue, orange - the list goes on and on. Oh, by the way, they're pretty cheap, too!

Sass & Bide Reason For Living Jumper: Love It or Hate It?

Jumpers usually emit a flirty, schoolgirl appeal but this Sass & Bide Reason For Living Jumper ($408) is quite the opposite. The muted, wrinkly fabric reminds me of The Matrix and the billowy sleeves are questionable. Don't get me wrong, there might be some futurists out there who would consider this as dark and lovely. Are you jumpin' for joy or is this creation a bust?

Celebrity Style: Mila Kunis

Visiting TRL with filming buddy Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis looked fetching in a Sass & Bide minidress and vertiginous black platform heels. The overall effect is sexy, but the dress's demure neckline and wee amount of volume keep it from crossing over into tarty. The dress is sold out on Shopbop but here's to hoping there's a restocking in the future, or you can just try contacting Sass & Bide directly. Hopefully we'll be seeing more Mila around, especially if she's going to be looking this good!

Fab Body Guide: Perfectly Proportionate Shoulders

I have a blonde bombshell of a friend who is a self-proclaimed broad-shouldered gal. We recently went shopping together because she needed tops and dresses and I'm here to help! We ended up scoring her some new fun and feminine pieces that helped proportion her shoulder with the rest of her bodacious bod.

I'm sure broad-shouldered broad Jessica Biel faces this challenge everyday and you can see such a difference between when she wears something ultra femme (left) and something not so femme (right). Not to say gals with broad shoulders can't wear a tee shirt when going casual, but here are some tips and items to trick the eye into thinking you have perfectly proportionate shoulders. Hope they help!

Loose deep v-neck sweaters, and v-necks in general, are your best friend.
Slouchy, menswearish trousers create more volume on the bottom therefore balancing out the shoulders.
Shrunken blazers with a nipped in waist make the upper half appear more compact.
A long, swingy top plays up the curve of the hips.
Contrary to what you may think, suspenders cut the shoulders down the middle and elongate the torso.
A feminine, flirty blouse softens an angular frame.

Come Spring Sass & Bide Vie, the denim-driven lower-priced collection, will offer more playful styles and layering pieces like denim, shorts, jackets, graphic T-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, and dresses. The line is scheduled to hit department stores next month, but you can purchases pieces from SassAndBide.com now. Jeans retail for $154 to $240, T-shirts from $63 to $120, and the rest from $119 to $260. Not that cheap but doable. C'est la vie!

Simply Fab: Sass & Bide Exclusive Tie Dye Tank Dress

Fashion is targeting breast cancer in a whole new way this time: tie dye. Sass & Bide has lent its exclusive tie dye tank dress ($170), to Net-A-Porter.com as part of the retailer's third installment of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is a topic that hits close to home for Sass & Bide co-founder Heidi Middleton, who was diagnosed with it in February 2007. But she and partner Sarah-Jane Clarke were ambassadors for the organization long before that. Actress Michelle Monoghan (left), models the Fall '08 dress, whose proceeds will aid Fashion Targets Breast Cancer Worldwide.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Sass & Bide

Once in a while a runway show brings a smile to my face. Sass & Bide took a sad story and turned it into fruit punch with their return to the runway Fall collection. The show was dedicated to a friend of theirs who passed away from cancer. "Rainbows for Kate” is a celebration of life, love, hope and happiness.

Rainbows translated into sequins, polka dots, ruffles, ribbons, plaid and super elaborate albeit fabulous head pieces. Layered stockings, fierce black heels and black undertones kept the collection from being overly frilly. Though the varicolored textures - also including a harlequin sequin print - were a tad circus-like, they were fun and unique. It's nice to see something daring at New York fashion week, and it's nice to witness such rich inspiration.
