Silk has a new look; it's more relaxed but hardened with tough details. This new silk utilitarian twist is more wearable and comfortable. Silk tops, jumpers, pants, and accessories have been updated with drawstrings, zippers and cargo pockets to lend a simultaneously chic and casual look. Gianfranco Ferre (left) went casual-lux with this zippered grape silk mechanic pantsuit. American Music Awards: Selena Gomez Love it Leave it D&G Spring 2012 Hannah Weil — Thu, 22 Sep 2011 10:05:06 PDT Opulent, silky prints ruled D&G's final runway show - and if you've ever wondered how to wear a scarf more than 10 different ways, this is it. For Spring 2012, Dolce & Gabbana's younger line showed us endless ways to adorn ourselves in silky, luxe prints - halter-tied flowing dresses, mini shorts, tunics, button-downs, wrap skirts, and even silk scarf-wrapped platforms and bags. Hardly any solids appeared at all - save for a denim-on-denim suit and a white button-down adding stark contrast to a pair of tailored silky, turquoise trousers and printed miniskirt. Whimsical and luxurious, we probably wouldn't feel right if we weren't wearing these pieces on a yacht somewhere off the Amalfi Coast. Trends: Prints, denim, scarves. Colors: Pink, green, blue, orange, multihued prints, polka dots. Key Look: The silky, mixed prints looked amazing, but we're particularly obsessed with the silky print tunic over the floral print silk shorts. Accessories: Scarf-wrapped platforms, major gold coin drop earrings and necklaces, small printed box clutches, larger, fringe-adorned printed clutches, and straw-trimmed floppy hats. Who Would Wear It: Glamorous vacationers and die-hard D&G fans. Michael Kors Spring 2012 Noria Morales — Wed, 14 Sep 2011 11:36:18 PDT "Afriluxe" is the term Michael Kors used to describe his Spring 2012 collection in show notes. It was a languid, very luxurious show that cited artisanal textures and raw textures as inspiration. Linen tunics and serapes, ponchos, sarongs, and caftans were styled with thick leather belts and strappy gladiator flat sandals. The season's most popular jacket, the anorak, was done here in silk. Colors were pulled from the earth - sand, olive, teak, and sienna made for a rich palette, and there was some tie-dye too. If the show didn't present any particularly new ideas, it did reinforce Kors's knack for making beautiful, luxurious things people want to own. His ideal clientele sat right in the front row: Zoe Saldana, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Mario Testino, Rachel Zoe, and Michael Douglas (sans Catherine Zeta-Jones) were on hand to watch the parade of caftans, ponchos, and snakeskin-trimmed dresses float seductively by. Trends: Tribal, safari, leather, anoraks, scarf dresses. Colors: Earth and sunset tones: ivory, olive, sienna, teak, sage, limestone. Key Piece: A white linen "wind coat" worn by Karolina Kurkova, the ponchos and caftans. Accessories: Incredible leather "Tanzania" messenger bag, strappy gladiator flat sandals, wide leather belts. Who Would Wear It: Classic, confident women like the ones we saw in the front row: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Zoe Saldana. Rachel Zoe Spring 2012 FabSugar — Tue, 13 Sep 2011 09:46:24 PDT Rachel Zoe claimed to be "still terrified" about showing her Spring collection to editors and buyers during Fashion Week, and we can't help but wonder why - America's most famous stylist cum designer has cornered the market on vintage glamour, and her latest collection proves it. Full-length silhouettes delivered plenty of glam factor via sheer mouselline fabric, sequins, and lamé. There were plenty of day options as well, with a military jacket and cropped pants getting a polished jolt from Zoe's now-signature tie-collar blouse, and a silk blouse and cropped trousers - both perfectly wearable on their own - becoming something much more dramatic when styled together in a deep shade of red, no less. If you crave Zoe's style of '70s glamour, you'll find everything you need in this collection. Trends: '70s, palazzo pants, tone-on-tone dressing, tuxedo details, jumpsuits, leather. Colors: White, olive, blush, ruby red, black. Key Look: A white tie-collar blouse with white palazzo pants, long lamé jacquard dress, sequin column gown. There was something for everyone - wool and lamé pants and mongolian wool vests for the bohemians, floral silk chiffon dresses for the romantics, matte charmeuse dresses for glamazons, and a cashmere blazer and tie-neck blouse for the working sophisticate. It was eclectic, but the fact that each look came together in a really polished way meant that the eclecticism not only worked, it actually focused the collection. Playing with texture and proportions - soft silk with boiled wool, a beaded tunic over a wool skirt - made for a richly layered collection that knew just when to stop before the hobo alarm went off. Who Would Wear It: Feminine eclectic girls who see harmony in mismatching. 2011 Fall New York Fashion Week: Suno Noria Morales — Sun, 13 Feb 2011 10:44:28 PST Walking into the crowded room for the Suno presentation, it was as if there were two worlds: one being the hypercrowded room of fashion insiders sipping the gratis dark 'n' stormy cocktails and plotting the evening's plans; the other was a peaceful, frozen-in-time world of Suno Fall. Models stood against paneled walls wearing layers of printed silks, textured knits, and apron dresses that hinted at Grandma's house dress. That said, it was only a hint, as the graphic prints, gorgeous florals and carefully mixed textures heralded a new approach to elegant dressing, Suno-style. Loose silhouettes and long layers drove home the idea that Fall 2011 will be about covering up. When Suno debuted in 2008 as a socially conscious line dedicated to supporting industry in Kenya, it took the bright, traditional African prints and fabrics and turned them into playful miniskirts and cropped blazers. Now the line seems to have grown up and found a softer femininity. Trends: Apron dress, long layers, long proportions, floral prints, unfinished knits. Colors: The florals and Kenyan prints that made Suno known took center stage over a specific color. Key Looks: An apron dress over a tie-neck blouse, the unfinished knits.
