Where There's Smoke, There's McQueen

As I look out the window to a faintly smoky-skied San Francisco, this Alexander McQueen motif from his Resort collection seems very relevant. In case you didn't hear, there were wildfires in Northern California recently, and the smoke spread to other parts of the state. Freaky? A little. When I first saw this wisp of a print, I had to zoom in. What is that?!

Many see McQueen as a portent in the fashion world, and, yes, he is pretty dope. He has always had his own aesthetic; slightly dark, immensely feminine, completely captivating. This moody motif actually evolved from a pattern on trenchcoats, to tromp l'oeil embroidery on shirts and pants, to a print on T-shirts and an LBD. We see prints on clothes day in and day out, but this one is a stand-out. The smoking and fashion debate continues; what about in this case? Can you make an exception? (Yes)

Freaky or Fabulous? Colorful Cigarettes

This Hollywood Dreams editorial in April's Flair magazine makes me want to pack up and head South to where the sun do shine. It doesn't hurt that it features one of the naturally sexiest models out there, Flavia Oliveira. I'm not endorsing smoking (I promise, Fit!), but doesn't she look way cool with those Nat Sherman rainbow cigarettes? I suppose it would have been fine to use regular white smokes, but the fact that they're pink, green, and super skinny makes it more fashiony. I know you once said smoking in editorials is not fashionable, but are colorful cigarettes freaky or fabulous?

Le Smoking at Hermès Fall 2008: Love It or Hate It?

Naughty Natasha Poly. Or shall I say naughty Jean Paul Gaultier for having his model smoke on the Hermès runway! I'm not so intrigued by the clothes, but I am drawn in by what's happening all around. I certainly don't condone smoking, but it works with the mature collection. And the Persian rug-covered catwalk takes me to an exotic place, far, far away. Though I wouldn't realistically wear this look, I dig the combination of the rug, cigarette, and belted coat. Do you?

Fab's Fashion Night Out!

While Pop was chatting it up with Gwen Stefani, I was doing what Fashion's Night Out was supposed to do - shopping! And gallivanting and celeb-spotting. You ready for my FNO adventure? My fellow fashion junkie friend and I started at Bergdorf Goodman where many fashion festivities were going on. Along the way I saw Rachel Bilson and Hayden waiting for their car in front of their hotel - I said hi to her but don't think she remembered me from when I interviewed her at Brian Reyes's show last Fashion Week. Moving on, as expected, there was a line to get into the department store, and it was a madhouse inside. I spotted jewelry designer Philip Crangi on the way in; it's hard to miss him, he looks like a pirate. We went straight to the shoe department where we fawned over Balmain boots, Giuseppe Zanotti lovers, awesome Alaia's, and Chanel flats. We quickly decided to leave the Bergdorf madness, but stopped at the M.C.L jewelry counter and said hi to model cutie Karlie Kloss on the way out.

We dashed down to Soho - my main goal of the night was the Intermix party where Sienna and Savannah Miller were hosting. The streets were alive with fashion! I had to pop into J.Crew (conveniently located across the street from Intermix) where I bought a super-cute long gold jeweled mushroom pendant.

Intermix was the place to be, with an ultra-fashion-y crowd and cool '80s tunes. Someone asked us if it was true Rihanna was supposed to come and before I knew it flashes were frenzied and there she was. We were actually in line for the bathroom when this happened and her and her posse came right towards us hence my super-close picture of her. She was incognito chic in a black wraparound-hooded dress and insane Grace Jones-esque shades and crimson lips. She posed for pics with a subtle smile on her face, the crowd was mesmerized. What a cool surprise! But where's Sienna?

There she is, sis in tow. But Sienna's hosting wasn't nearly as impressive as Rihanna's - the Millers sisters were outtie, they didn't even stay for champagne. Wha? We had a dinner date at Indochine at 11p.m., but along the way my friend bought a pair of fly boots from Steven Steve Madden and I scored a glam rockin' purple sequin blazer from Topshop. They aren't online, so I can't show you, but they're dope and we did our economy-stimulating part of the evening. Done and done.

Cruising into Indochine was unreal. Iman was in the first booth, post-bartending at Barneys Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were in the next, and models Lily Donaldson and Daria (Daria!) Werbowy were smoking cigarettes another booth away. Can you say awesome? We met up with fellow bloggers Faran from Nylon and Britt from Fashionista and gobbled up wonderful exotic fare. At one point I was in the bathroom with Iman and totally froze - her beauty is unreal. I headed home and had sweet dreams of fashion - goodnight Fashion's Night Out!

2010 Spring New York Fashion Week: Vena Cava

Vena Cava always does things a little differently. Both in show presentation and clothing inspiration; that's why they are a growing fashion force. Vena Cava was at Milk Studios - where numerous designers are showing this time around - and I arrived promptly on time because I heard rumblings the designers were doing a runway show in lieu of their usual presentation style. They did both. It started as a runway show, models perched themselves around and on ladders, then it turned into a presentation - the best of both worlds. The Fiery Furnaces performing live were an awesome accompaniment to the modern, exotic collection. From marbelized prints, to laser cuts, to hints of skin, Vena Cava loves to play. But in a very sophisticated manner. A dress may be baby doll, but it's far from goo-goo-gaa-gaa in a sexy black-rayon jersey and metal safety-pin camisole. The palette was moody - black, brown, grays - but a punchy orange saved it from somber. The orange cupra jersey asymmetrical dress made my heart skip. Lisa and Sophie, the hotshot design duo, continue to experiment with separates. Dresses are always unique, but skirts, jumpsuits, shorts, busters, leggings, and tees were thrown into the mix. Accessories weren't forgotten; stylist Kate Young completed looks with Persol shades, Robert Clergerie shoes, and Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. jewels. Vena Cava - where there's smoke, there's fire.

Trend Alert: Smoked Salmon

I'm not a huge fan of smoked salmon in the food world. In the fashion world, however - tasty. Cutie Kristin Cavallari rocked a salmon hued Herve Leger with equally Fab hot pink trimmed nude Loubs. She went there, and I commend her. It might be too much for some, but you only live once. Salmon can be toned down with heather gray or amped up with hot pink, you choose your choice.

Fab Finger Discount: Express Silk Bias Cut Scarf

This Silk Bias Cut Scarf ($15, originally $35) is Express, but it might as well be from Alexander McQueen's smoky Resort collection. Though the print is not technically that of smoke, it sure looks like it. Most scarves are stylish, yes, but not necessarily chic. But chic is what comes to mind when I look at this one. It's a good way to pull off moody McQueen without handing over your life savings. Plus, it'll look interesting worn casually with jeans or with a fancy dress or skirt.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2009: Heart Truth Red Dress Collection

Today was my first official full day of Fashion Week and I couldn't have kicked it off with a better show. The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection is a feel good show that benefits a good cause - heart disease in women. It was super fun because fearless celebrity females strutted their stuff in various red designer dresses. It was cool to see Vivica Fox sing down the runway in her super sparkly Jenny Packham gown, and gold medalist Nastia Liukin work it in a saucy BCBG LRD. These stars proved that you can make serious waves in a red dress. With a touching introduction by the beloved Tim Gunn, a parade of famous faces took the stage.Before I leave you, here are the four things you can do to prevent heart disease: eat right, be physically active, do not smoke, and keep your body weight low.
