LA Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott is never one to shy away from bold and racy designs and his Spring 2008 collection was no exception. Though there was no ass-slapping between models like there has been in his past shows, there was lots of drama. Namely, all the female models walked out with large garbage can hats.

Backstage, watching them get ready before the show, I wondered why they had dirt-like makeup on their faces, legs and arms. Upon show time, it all came together: the concept was construction chic. Imagine Grace Kelly was a sewer employee, collected from the dirty work conditions and thrown onto a runway. She'd still be glamorous and gorgeous but with some dirt around the edges.

The silhouettes were nothing new but the prints were avant-garde and edgy. They included street signs, boot prints, pipes, rulers and tools. The inspirational aspect was that these tough prints were plastered on rather feminine dresses, blouses and skirts. The most unwearable piece was a black bubble tiered dress made of what looked like plastic; it rivaled the famous Lanvin silhouettes.

What was your inspiration for this show?
I was really inspired by construction workers, trash cans, back alleys, junkyards, road signs, work boots; all these brute, masculine images. All the things that are overlooked. I wanted to take all these elements and make something beautiful out of them.

Who would you say is the Jeremy Scott girl?
I would say that Cory Kennedy is the Jeremy Scott girl. She's definitely one of my muses. She keeps me on my toes.

What's a staple every woman should have in her wardrobe?
I great pair of high heels.

What are your favorite pieces from the collection?
It's like picking between babies! I like the boot stomp pieces a lot.

Let's talk about the beauty.
We took elements of Grace Kelly, the matte red lip and the hair. But then it's like she's been on a construction site.

What was your biggest struggle with this collection?
I can't really think of one. It's kind of like clockwork and connecting the dots. My advice would be to stick to what you believe and to follow your instinct.

LA Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Gregory Parkinson

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if a hippie chick and a gypsy girl raided each other's closets? Welcome to Gregory Parkinson's Spring 2008 collection: a hybrid of tie dye and ombre prints that a hippie craves meshed with the flowiness and ease a gypsy needs for her vagabond life.

Color was everywhere in this happy collection and it included vibrant yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples and greens. Silhouettes mostly consisted of dresses - loose tank dresses, long tiered and layered frocks, belted ones - and skirts.

Mixed prints were also present and reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw's closet. Despite the ease and comfort of Gregory's clothes, each piece still carried an air of glam that every gal loves.

LA Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Petro Zillia

Paris Hilton is an avid Petro Zillia fan - in fact, upon her exit from jail, she wore the brand's olive blazer. Judging from this collection of flirty and fun dresses, it's clear the feeling is mutual for Petro Zillia designer Nony Tochterman; I can for sure see the star sporting these frocks.

Color and silky fabrics were omnipresent. As with any feminine collection, ruffles and tiers were abundant. Frocks were one-shouldered, v-neck, tube top and halter. High-waisted silk shorts were paired with sheer tie-neck blouses.

The key motif of this Spring collection was sheerness - it would take a confident woman, ie. Paris, to rock this with ease.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Viktor & Rolf

After last season, when models walked out attached to their own personal lighting apparatuses, I was curious to see what gimmick Viktor & Rolf would come up with next.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are romancing the harlequin for Spring: Pierrot collars, pom-poms, diamond shapes, and violins were choice motifs. The pretty palette was Chanel-inspired: black, white, blushing pink and peach. There were a couple trademark fashion-as-surrealist-art outfits - the ruffled pink coat which framed the model's face with a white rosette and pink violin, for instance.

But as the models emerged from a gaping mouth, it was clear that Viktor & Rolf was going more commercial. Wearable silk minidresses with lace collars and multiple beautiful tiered gowns were red carpet-ready. Even the violin theme was toned down to a lace appliqué or a necklace. Subtle Viktor & Rolf, but the Amsterdam-based fashion brand still astounds.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Aquascutum

British brand Aquascutum is known for inventing the first waterproof cloth in 1853 and creating the raincoat to protect the English from the unpredictable weather. Given those facts, it's not surprising the Spring collection was chock full of outerwear. The majority were simple with clean lines, functional yet stylish. Interesting were the necklines, which included spread and motorcycle collars. They came in muted colors like navy blue, khaki, black and grey. A few khaki coats were doused with pops of fuchsia and red, which was refreshing among a sea of neutrals.

A couple dresses with paisley and floral patterns and bright hues were spotted, as well as skirt and blouse combos in solid colors like navy blue and orange. The most interesting piece was a cropped fuchsia pant, which was uncharacteristic of Aquscutum. Then again, you can always expect the unexpected in fashion.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Christopher Kane

After 23 of his Spring collection pieces were stolen from his studio just a little over a week ago, Christopher Kane set out to recreate everything, with only days before his presentation. Many would have folded under such pressure, but Kane pulled it off.

The 25-year-old designer presented a ruggedly feminine rock'n'rolly collection full of python printed chiffon, ripped denim, and ruffles galore. Although he's only shown a couple of times since graduating from design school, Kane quickly became associated with body conscious, up-to-there mini dresses. This collection was a departure from that silhouette: skirts were tiered, sweatshirts baggy, and everything was more loosened up. In summary, this garb was definitely not what was expected, but that just keeps everyone on their toes.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Diane von Furstenberg

Diane von Furstenberg has a new direction for Spring: step away from her iconic wrap dresses and embrace flowing, colorful ones. Though a few safari-style wrap dresses crept onto the catwalk (it wouldn't be DVF without it), most pieces were loose maxi frocks and tee shirt dresses in bright and bold colors. There were some vintage-inspired skirt suits and voluminous tunics in amazing tropical prints. Fun!

A good mix of prints and solids came up, the former being geometric but not square. A couple of ombre dresses were shown in colors that resembled rainbow sherbet ice cream...quite delectable! Surprisingly, though flowy dresses dominated, the overall look was not super feminine. Cuban-style fedoras and funky prints gave the collection an air of masculinity that we've all been craving lately.

2008 Spring Couture: Givenchy

If there's such a thing as being equally minimalist and over-the-top, Givenchy's Spring 2008 couture show is it. Natalia Vodianova and Lou Doillon looked on as Riccardo Tisci's creations came to life.

On the simple spectrum, there were slim white pants and tailored white blazers, sheer tank tops and ivory tights. The rest was drama at its best: accordion-like silhouettes, layered feathers, holey sequin jackets, sheer tiered gowns, overly exaggerated origami frocks, and pretty embellishments. The way I see it, if the no-frills Jil Sander and the overly frilly Dior produced a fashion-forward love child, this collection would be her. Model child indeed!

Spring 2008 Couture: Armani Privé

Yet again, Mr. Giorgio Armani presented a drama-filled collection that his best costumer, Cate Blanchett, can easily fall in love with.

Armani Privé came in the form of oversized ruffles, poufy bubble hems, large stand-up collars, fuzzy feathers, overly tiered skirts, and lots of embellishments. And though the designer isn't usually one to overdo accessories, this collection was an exception. Chunky bangles, big clutches, beaded necklaces, and jeweled belts added to the theatrics of the show. I'm looking forward to seeing the Armani Privé runway translated onto the red carpet.

LA Fashion Week Spring 2008, Chick by Nicky Hilton: Love It or Hate It?

Nicky Hilton's Spring 2008 collection for her line, Chick by Nicky Hilton, is retro with a modern twist. This apple print halter mini dress is one of the many cutesy pieces Paris' little sis designed. Although apples aren't one of my favorite fruits (I mean does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?), I would wear this frock because it's lighthearted, fun and super girly. Do you love it or hate it?
