We typically see socialite Olivia Palermo in fancy frocks and shiny sandals, so her casual appearance at the opening of 7 For All Mankind's NYC boutique is a welcome change. A striped cardigan, no matter what color, has the ability to inject a dash of sportif into any outfit. Without the black and white cardi, Olivia's ensemble would have been just fine; but with it, she exudes nonchalant chicness. Stripes and cardigans are unlikely to go out of style, so put the two everlasting trends together and it's fashion magic.

Lacoste Fall 2012

If the snow outside wasn't enough for NYFW attendees, Felipe Oliveira Baptista provided a few snowflakes of his own for Lacoste's Fall runway show this morning at Lincoln Center. As fake snow blew into the audience, Oliveira Baptista set the tone for his sporty chic ski-inspired line. Mixing in the old - Oliveira Baptista referenced uniforms the brand designed for France's 1966 national ski team - with the new, the designer conceived a smart mix of body-conscious pieces fitting for any après-ski occasion. One can easily head to the slopes, or to the cabin, in one of Oliveira Baptista's rugby-meets-ski minidresses and jumpsuits or sport-striped leggings paired with chic oversized parkas and coats. Leather quilted vests and jackets injected a luxurious touch to the overt sportif theme. With a play on fashionable function, Oliveira Baptista experimented with zippers, some of which opened up all the way up to the shoulders to replicate the look of a cardigan tossed over your shoulder, while others served as pockets for hoods disguised as a stylish oversized collar. Our New York Fashion Week kickoff began this morning with Steven Alan. For Fall, the designer showed another batch of covetable casual-cum-cool offerings pairing his signature modern classic style with a bold touch of Mexican and folk influence. Full red skirts were paired with riding jackets and fedora hats and structured striped wool vests with slightly flared pants, and there was even a cute vintage-inspired tweed jumpsuit styled with a button-up blouse and cardigan. For a soft touch, the designer also supplied sweet peplum-embellished floral and striped dresses, plaid shirt dresses, and, for a little shine, black and gold brocade dresses and trousers. Jennifer Garner caught a flight at the Toronto airport in a red cardigan and landed at LAX in a striped sweater yesterday. She was in Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival, where Jennifer premiered Butter with her costars Ashley Greene, Olivia Wilde, and Alicia Silverstone. She also made time to party during her stay up north, and she stopped by The Weinstein Company's soiree and the InStyle and HFPA bash. The pregnant actress got the fun started even before TIFF when she hit the red carpet for the Pink Party in LA over the weekend. Now that she's heading home, though, she'll be able to get back into her routine with her adorable daughters, Violet and Seraphina, while her husband, Ben Affleck, continues working on Argo.
