Perhaps you don't share in Valli's love of gargantuan jewelry or pearls; find a size and style that works for your personality. An outfit doesn't always call for a necklace, but sometimes it's refreshing to take the focus off the clothes and onto the jewels. Subversive's jewelry designer Justin Guinta, who was recently named best accessories designer by Ecco Domani's Fashion Foundation, is bringing his "more is more" baroque philosophy to the masses. Subversive For Target, much like Dominique Cohen For Target, features knockout necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. The collection, which ranges from $15 to $60, will hit stores March 23 and stay through July 20. Me and my neck are SO excited!

While white lace makes us feel girlie and romantic, in a darker palette, the feel is something else entirely. Moody blue and black lace are more vampy than girlie, as Olivia Palermo, Chloë Moretz, and Lea Michele prove in their lace confections. Olivia channels an almost gothic-inspired style, thanks to a long, sheer skirt to complement a black lace top, while Chloë's ladylike Dolce & Gabbana frock feels a touch edgier with black lace applique. With all the bold, subversive prints we saw on the Spring '12 runways, it's no surprise that some celebs are getting in on the trend a little early. We spotted a few of our fashion favorites in vibrant mixed-media patterns on the red carpet recently, and we truly can't get enough of them. Alexa Chung and Leelee Sobieski both stepped out in Mary Katrantzou's signature elaborate prints, pairing their respective frocks with black heels and minimal jewelry, while Kate Bosworth attended an InStyle event in a stunning Peter Pilotto sheath dress, styled with cobalt blue pumps and a nude clutch. What's great about each piece is that it stands out immediately, and needs little styling; with so much intricate detailing to focus on, it's best to keep shoes and accessories simple. To work the trend yourself, check out our tips below - and then get shopping.

Mixed motif pieces can work for day or evening; a printed blouse looks office-appropriate when tucked into a slim-fitting pencil skirt, while a bold dress can turn heads out at night with a great pair of neutral heels.
Keep accessories to a minimum, if not nonexistent. A print this eye-catching needs little else to compete with. Opt for a simple envelope clutch or chain-strap purse, and one cocktail ring or thin bangle.

Ewan McGregor and Mike Mills Tell Us the Lessons They Learned Filming Beginners

In the movie Beginners, out last Friday in limited release, we meet Oliver, played by Ewan McGregor, after the death of his mother and then again after the death of his father. His mother's passing prompts his 70-something father Hal (Christopher Plummer) to come out as a homosexual man determined to dive into LA's gay culture and experience everything he missed while in the closet. Soon Hal finds out he has terminal cancer, but he's set on continuing his new life like he never got the diagnosis. The movie follows in parallel Hal's final years, as well as his son Oliver's life after Hal dies. Once the father he was just getting to know is gone, Oliver is shrouded in a cloud of grief. He meets Anna (Melanie Laurent), a French actress, and we see him struggle to let himself fall in love.

I recently had the chance to interview Ewan McGregor and Mike Mills, the movie's writer and director. Beginners is based on Mike's experience with his own father, who came out of the closet after his mother passed away. Here's what they told me they learned while making a film about love, loss, and the promise of new beginnings.

Humor can help you break free from difficult circumstances. Mike describes what he learned through his parents' subversive sense of humor: "I think in my family humor has been used as a way to get out of different boxes. The box of being in a hospital, the box of being in a sad situation. It’s a way to dismantle the rules that are holding you down."

It's liberating to speak a different language. "For Melanie [Laurent] acting in English for the first time," Ewan recalls, "she said she felt this incredible sense of freedom because she wasn’t acting in French. She was like a live wire, all over the room. You never knew what she was going to do next."

You can still learn from and connect to your late family members. Mike said that his mother knew his dad was gay and was "a super complicated Humphrey Bogart of a woman." He says making the movie helped him unpack the complexities of both of his parents: "I really enjoyed writing from their perspectives. Sometimes when I watch the movie, I kind of feel my dad. I don’t think Christopher is my dad, but I kind of feel my dad or like I’m talking to my dad about what Christopher’s doing. And I cherish that."

Sexuality is only one part of what makes each person who they are. Ewan, who has appeared in various movies dealing with gay themes, explained, "I think there’s a mistake that’s made when you’re playing a homosexual character that you’re playing a gay character. No, you’re playing a character. That’s it. You're playing a character who likes to sleep with men. They’re whole human beings. So sexuality would be a part of that."

Anyone can surprise you. Ewan says Christopher Plumber "became a skinny jean connoisseur. He looked all right in them."

The Sexy Schoolgirl Trend: Love It or Leave It?

Emmy Nomination Snap Judgments: Comedy

The nominations for the 2011 Primetime Emmys are out, and after soaking up the nods (and already imagining a very stylish red carpet), we're ready to talk about our snap judgments. Here are the shocks and pleasant surprises we felt while hearing this morning's announcement for the comedy categories - stay tuned for our thoughts about the drama nods.

I'm ecstatic that Parks and Recreation got its first nod for best comedy series. The NBC show is utterly deserving of the honor, and the fact that the show on the whole, plus star Amy Poehler, got recognized allows me to ignore the fact that other cast members didn't get nominations.
Where did Louis C.K. come from? I've been a fan of the comedian for a few years, but never dreamed that his subversive humor would land him an Emmy nomination. It's especially cool that he broke into the category of lead actor in a comedy series, because it's gotten pretty predictable and usually sticks to the stars of long-running network sitcoms. If his show Louie needed any sort of endorsement, here it is.
