Pre Game Your Way to Big, Fluffy Waves

I've been a little wary of texturizing sprays ever since a junior high run-in with a "beach curls" product that left my hair tragically oily and flat just hours before a dance. But now my faith has been restored by A Beautiful Life Pre Game Texturizing Spray ($22), which uses natural ingredients to deliver big, coconut-scented waves and plenty of volume. I have very fine hair with an open wave, so most curl-enhancing products fail on me because they make my hair too heavy. Not this stuff, though; I can imagine it being good for girls with fine hair of any texture, because it separates without weighing down. My only caveat is that it can make your hair too big and frizzy if you over-scrunch - I initially came out looking about as poofed up as a poodle. All in all, though, an extremely effective and eco-concious way to get sweet mermaid hair.

3 Steps to Getting the Minimalistic Marc by Marc Jacobs Beauty Look

Marc by Marc Jacobs is known for its clean-lined ensembles, playful color combinations, and in the case of the Fall 2012 collection: loose, textured pieces. So what better way to let the clothing shine through than by keeping the upcoming season's beauty look appropriately minimalistic? It's the epitome of cool-girl style, and most of all, surprisingly easy to re-create.

Have the hair: Redken creative consultant Guido Palau opted for a "simple and masculine" ponytail that featured a deep side part and at-the-nape base. In creating the style, hair was blow-dried "dead-straight," Palau explained, and prepped with the brand's Satinwear lotion - for which Palau describes as his "go-to blow-dry product."
Nail the nails: "Marc wanted to portray a look that was innocent but still perfectly groomed," said manicurist Elisa Ferri. To accomplish this feel, models' nails were painted with two coats of Zoya's Adel, a sheer off-white with a creamy finish.
Capture the cosmetics: Shiseido artistic director Dick Page mixed up a custom rouge shade for the show, keeping the vibrant hue the focus of the look. Add a touch of mascara and foundation where needed; geek-chic glasses optional.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs collection was all about the schoolgirl gone grunge. Loose trapeze-like dresses and combat boots melded with pleated skirts and pretty bouclé coats resulting in a mashup of feminine cool tinged with military touches. The main focus were full-skirted dresses made in floral prints, metallic finishes, plaid, velvet, and sheer mesh. Outerwear featured a standout fur collared anorak and plenty of ladylike coats. We were especially smitten with the polished textural coats, nipped in at the waist with leather belts. For accessories, Jacobs highlighted a range of structured satchels, military caps, and punkish lace-up boots. Read more highlights below, then see the complete collection in the slideshow.

Colors: Red, blue, black, gray, brown, gold.

Naeem Khan Fall 2012

With the Oscars at the end of the month, Naeem Khan's gorgeously crafted red-carpet wear couldn't have come at a better time. Head-to-toe sparkle, full-length prints, embellished pants - Khan's wildly beautiful Fall '12 confections are begging to be worn right now. Beginning with an essentially ethnic-inspired feel, Khan sent ornately crafted tunic-style dresses and gowns down the runway that spoke decidedly to his native India. But, cinched at the waist with lovely black bows, these tunics are both somewhat exotic and at the same time steeped in classic red-carpet glamour. It's that wow factor that registers, the luxuriousness of it all, the decadence that unfolds in all-over sparkle, fringe trim, and jaw-dropping silhouettes. Showstoppers are Khan's bread and butter - in fact, it was hard not to audibly ohh and ahh with nearly every ensemble's turn down the runway. That's not to say you tire of the effect - you're captivated. It's not just the exotic detail, the texture, or the shine, it's how Khan masters the cut. Necklines and slits are sexy but never reveal too much; fringe and beading are used abundantly, but it never feels over-the-top. It's how Khan's mastered the art of razzle-dazzle with perfect allure.

Trends: Textured, embellished eveningwear; ethnic-feeling robe- and tunic-style gowns; dramatic black and white prints.
Colors: Black, white, silver, gold.
Key Piece: The gold full-length v-neck gown is begging for a red-carpet appearance.
Accessories: Open-toe cutout ankle boots, peep-toe pumps, ankle-strap heels.
Who Would Wear It: Hollywood A-listers and Oscar contenders like front-rower Ahna O'Reilly; beauties like Zoe Saldana and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would carry off these gowns flawlessly.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2012

One thing's for sure - nothing is off limits or out of the realm of possibility when Marc Jacobs is at the helm. Set in a Rachel Feinstein-designed storybook-inspired castle-in-ruins Winter wonderland, he presented his Fall '12 lineup with more than just a little fashion fanfare. The first word that comes to mind? Hats! And lots of them, all by mastermind milliner Stephen Jones; each one more wonderfully whimsical than the one before. These wild toppers, in addition to the parade of rich, slightly oversized outerwear, giant safety pin closures, bejeweled square-toed shoes, luxe ostrich-skin handbags, and more, served as a serious testament to Marc's vivid imagination. All flights of fancy aside, though, there were ultra-wearable pieces peeking out from under the more fantastical garb. To this point, we spied cozy layered tweeds in muted tones, shimmery metallic pencil skirts in looser silhouettes, and slick cropped pants sent out in leather, brocade, and jacquard versions. Marc Jacobs's Les Misérables-meets-Dickensian disco-meets Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter tea party collection certainly highlighted the fact that fashion, at its core, is whatever you make of it . . . and yes, wildly fun.

Trends: rich textiles like brocade and jacquard, floppy hats, oversized outerwear, fur-accented accessories.
Colors: Muted jewel tones - green, purple, ruby red, pink, slate gray, and black.
Key Piece: Slightly oversized coats in luxe fabrics and cropped pants in every texture, from leather to brocade.
Accessories: Fabulously fantastical hats in every color, square-toed shoes with crystallized buckles, long opera-length gloves with finger cutouts, and large boxy totes, some covered in fur, some made in decadent ostrich skin textures.
Who Would Wear It: The fashion-daring set, like Anna Dello Russo.

Tory Burch Fall 2012

Tory Burch's Fall collection was inspired by "the idea of a prim girl who's under the spell of the wrong kind of guy." The results? An array of prim and polished looks injected with just the right amount of librarian girl sexiness. Sultry lace dresses showcased embellished collars, peplum tops were adorned with sequins, and pencil skirts were decorated with frilly hemlines. Burch also gave new life to tweed and tartan; a pair of knockout leather tweed-printed pants were the highlight of the show. Meanwhile, a cozy selection of bouclé jackets and angora sweaters provided texture and warmth. For accessories, the designer featured patent spectator shoes and a range of heavily embellished chain bags and floral clutches. More details below.
