2009 Cannes Film Festival: Tilda Swinton

Wahoo - the 2009 Cannes Film Festival has begun! It was just reported the lavish festival will be toned down this year - Vanity Fair dismissed its black-tie annual and Louis Vuitton didn't book its usual table at the amfAR dinner - but we can still expect fashion on the red carpet from the likes of Diane Kruger, Penelope Cruz, and the enigmatic Tilda Swinton.

Tilda is up first for your judging pleasure. Her monochrome bordeaux layered Haider Ackermann ensemble may also be toned down, but it sure is flattering. Doesn't she look so tall and statuesque? And the mix of materials is lovely.

This is just the amuse-bouche. Look forward to fetes hosted by Dolce & Gabbana and Dsquared2, guaranteed to provide controversial fashion fare.

Oscars Trend Alert: All Tied Up in Bows and Knots

Bows and ties and knots, oh my! On this year's Oscars red carpet, Amanda Seyfried, Tilda Swinton, Heidi Klum, Freida Pinto, and Jessica Biel were well-fastened with bold, over-sized bows and subtle, delicate knots. Seyfried's festive red Valentino gown won't secure her a gold statuette, but it's certainly given "It's a wrap!" a whole new meaning. Take a bow . . .

Oscars Red Carpet: Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton blew onto the red carpet looking avant-garde, this time in a sand-toned, draped blouse paired with a sleek, black, sweeping skirt, both by Lanvin. Dark lips add a touch of color, and heavy bangles complete the look. Her ensemble isn't the most flattering but it does complement her offbeat personality. What do you think?

Trend Alert: Go Graphic or Go Home

My favorite Spring collection was Dries Van Noten. Graphic prints were an integral part of the eclectic collection. These calculated prints command attention and are stimulating to the eye. Celebrities have already dabbled in this cool trend and it's only going to grow. If you want to be ahead of the curve, go graphic or go home. What's more, circular and angular graphic prints stand alone - you can pair down the rest of your look. Fergie, in Tommy Hilfiger, funked up her graphic print dress with layered bracelets and blue suede sandals, while Tilda Swinton was purely polka doted in her silky Lanvin.

Shining Stars of the Venice Film Festival

There are stars and then there are shining stars. At the 2008 Venice Film Festival, a slew of actresses and models flew overseas to attend, but only a handful shined. There were plenty of arenas to flaunt their fashions - movie premieres, photocalls, parties - and the likes of Charlize Theron and Natalie Portman went all out. The screening of Valentino: The Last Emperor especially brought out a stylish crop. Enter the Venician red carpet.

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Tilda Swinton

Oh, I'm so glad Tilda decided to wear some makeup to the Gala. Her lace Prada dress, though not the most flattering, is very her. I like that she brought in some color with her orange star brooch and matching bracelet. How do you feel about this look?

Behind the Seams: Simon Doonan Barneys Book Signing

Totals. Totally. Totes. Funny words from fashion's funny man, and Barneys creative director, Simon Doonan. Fab was lucky enough to catch Mr. Doonan on a sunshiny day promoting his new book Eccentric Glamour at the Barneys store in San Francisco. As you can see, he practices what he preaches wearing a Moschino jacket yelling the words "Good Taste Doesn't Exist" and a tie that whispers "Fashion is full of chic!" As Simon puts it, "These are all Franco Moschino-isms. He was a genius and a very innovative guy. Not bad for English as a second language." Enough said.

Simon was very calm, friendly, and, of course, witty, and was happy to spill some beans for yours truly. I left the store feeling super inspired to wear my wackiest things and throw all regularity to the wind. I guess Simon has that effect on people.

What jump started this book?

I was horrified by these two trends. One was the slut trend and one was the gun-shy celebrity. So between the super-conservative celebs, who were just wearing prom gowns, and the super-slutty woman, the regular gal on the street wasn't getting any inspiration. The answer is eccentricity. Glamour and eccentricity. It's about looking inside and not looking like everyone else. It's against conformity. If everyone else has it, you don't want it. When people tend to look the same, the It bag, the fake hair, the fake tan - it can make everyone look very similar. It's about working on your own look.

Who are some designers you have your eye on?

I think Phillip Lim is incredibly talented. The Rodarte girls are great. They've gone from being very avant-garde to a place where they're making stuff people cannot just admire but wear. Alexander Wang, the usual suspects. I love Scott Sternberg who does Band of Outsiders - I wear a lot of his clothes myself.

My favorite book of yours is Wacky Chicks. If you were to do a sequel, are there any women you would add to your list?

I would love to do Wacky Chicks Two. That book is now over five years old and a lot of the women in it are median ages, in their 40s and 50s, so there's a whole new generation of wacksters. Amy Winehouse. I strongly disagree with her drug taking - I mean it's insane - but when I was that age I was a mess, too. I think she's triggering a whole movement of eccentricity where people don't want to look like everyone else. She says it's groovy to look completely different and insane; she pulled that beehive out of no where and has her own look. She should be applauded. Because everyone was getting the Kelly Clarkson makeover, everyone ended up looking like pop princesses. What's that about?

That wasn't what we were used to in music. We're used to Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Siouxsie Sioux - provocative girls who all look different from each other.

Was there anyone on the Oscars red carpet that stood out to you?

Tilda Swinton - she's interviewed in my book. Tilda's genius. I think it's sad that people can't step back and be like: well, that isn't my cup of tea. That whole idea of the fashion police has affected everybody, people have become hypercritical, it's very high school. Everyone's in a tissy about it, it's ridiculous. Instead of just saying, why not?

Fab Flash: Prada, Calvin Klein Reveal Celebrity Guests to Costume Institute Gala

As the biggest singular fashion event of the year approaches - The Met's Costume Institute Gala on May 5 - designers have already started to announce which celebrities they are bringing as guests.

Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein revealed that he is dressing Fergie and Liv Tyler - no surprise there, since he's brought Liv to the event the past couple of years. He hinted that Fergie and Liv weren't his only two guests, but wouldn't name any more names.

Meanwhile, Miuccia Prada has invited recent Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton and actress Elizabeth Banks to accompany her.

Remember, this year the Gala's theme is superheroes, so it will be interesting to see how much the attendees play into that. I can't wait!
