How Would YOU Wear It? Katie Holmes

I'm hesitant to diss Katie Holmes' style because I am of the camp that thinks her fashion sense has grown leaps and bounds post Tom Cruise. That said, simply put, she sometimes dresses too old for her age.

We get it, she has an older man to keep up with, but that doesn't mean she has to dress his age. Here she's wearing something a Glam Ma would wear on Christmas morning. I appreciate the color scheme but I would have worn a shorter satin trench (belted!), a V-neck top, black patent pumps, and perhaps a black belt. Besides, it's way too cold for her long, skinny toes to be creeping out.

Look of the Day: Pretty in Plaid

Trend Alert: In the Trenches

One piece of outerwear you will find in every fashion professional's closet is a trench. The trench has been around for ions - and is functional fashion at its best. First created by Thomas Burberry for the British army officers in World War I, the garment kept the troops warm and dry in the trenches. This coat continues to serve people well in the trenches, with it's ability to be both glamorous and serviceable. With so many incarnations throughout time, most notably by Yves Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier, the design has barely changed. If you don't have a Fab trench by now, now is the time to take the plunge.

What's a plentiful Fall wardrobe without a classic trench? Seriously lacking, that's what. Trench coats never go out of style, and they're great when not-so-nice weather comes along, as it likes to do around this time of year.

So when a trench goes on sale, like this Bebe Flared Short-Sleeve Trench Coat, $77 (originally $119), I jump at the opportunity. It's part of a wider Bebe Sale, so if you're not convinced with my trench coat bit, go for the platform sandals or the ruffled dresses.

n. Extension of the garment that is sewn to the collar and folds back over the chest area. Typical in jackets and coats and also in some blouses and dresses. Notched lapel is the most classic. Higher fashion menswear lapels are semi or peaked, with sharply pointed extension. Collars arose from simple necklines to support neckwear, then were turned over into lapels starting in the late 18th century.

Trend Alert: Cropped Trenches

A little while ago we showed some super fresh Spring trenches. Seeing as how the trench is both a classic and one of the most popular choices for outerwear this season, we are going to be seeing some modernized versions of it. So if you haven't already found that perfect trench maybe go a little avant garde with a cropped trench. Best worn with a long tunic or tee, to offset the crop, these little dudes are funky and youthful. They may not protect you as much from thunderstorms but you'll sure look in the now while running for cover.

The Look for Less: The Burberry Trench

Burberry is known for its incredibly well-made, chic trench coats, but what's the point if we can't have one (or two or three) in our closets? I purchased a trench a while back, and though it's not a super high fashion designer, it still gives my outfits a sprinkle of sophistication. This Burberry London Windsor Trench Coat, $1,175, definitely commands attention, especially with its signature buttons (sooo Burberry), belted waist and plaid lining.

You don't need to dish out tons of cash to look money and that's where MICHAEL Michael Kors Belted Trench Coat, $128, comes in. This trench is classic yet modern, and like the Burberry version, has tab sleeves and a flapped yoke in the back. And, it's less than half the price. As well, while it doesn't have the plaid lining, you could always pick out a fun lining and have it sewn in it - now there's a fun project! Score!

Come Fab Finding With Me: Dinner With The Ex(!)

DearSugar and I had a recent conversation about what one should wear for a nerve-inducing evening spent going out to dinner with an ex. I experienced this last Fall and I did obsess over what to wear.

Here is a wardrobe Catch 22: you don't want to look too sexy because you don't want to give off the wrong vibe; you don't want to look like crap because you want him to know what he's missing! So let's say the situation is that this is a friendly dinner with the ex - no hidden agenda here - so you want to look great, but not overly sexy.

I'll start you off with some armor: this Theory Belted Trench, $495. A trench is classic, and this one in particular is modest - but not at all frumpy!
