You didn't have to be conscious in the '60s to know Twiggy. The famed model, full name Twiggy Lawson, made her mark in the modeling scene during the free-love era, capturing everyone with her waif-like figure, pixie haircut, and big baby blues. All it took was one eyelash bat and I was smitten. Her mod appeal took America by storm, influencing others to draw in fake lower eyelashes, tote lunch boxes, and wear tights and sweaters. The cool thing about Twiggy is that she still inspires others with her personal style and quirk. Her modeling hay-day may have lasted only a decade, but her essence continues to make an iconic dent in the fashion world. Did you know she's also an award-winning singer? Awesome. A Fabby Halloween: Twiggy

Twiggy may no longer scream mod queen, but circa 1960s, she was highly popular for her high-fashion mod look. If you're looking to mimic someone with a bold, youthful signature style this Halloween, Twiggy is your girl. Inspired by the mod creations of English fashion designer Mary Quant, the supermodel wore everything from mini skirts to shift dresses, go-go boots to funky print dresses, sequins to plaid. Twiggy, whose real name is Lesley Hornby, wasn't merely known for her stick skinny body (hence the childhood nickname) and quirky fashion sense; she also spearheaded the application of fake lashes under bottom lashes and the androgynous pixie haircut. Groovy.

Fab Body Guide, Part Two: The Perfect Swimsuits For Petites

Being petite can make finding the perfect swimsuit quite a challenge. Don't get me wrong, having a petite figure can be lots of fun! Smaller bodies can get away with loud prints and fun cuts. Avoid wearing solid colors and stay away from too much fabric.

Small Bust: Colorful patterns, stripes, and ruffles can add an extra boost to your chest area. If you'd prefer a bigger lift, look to padded bikini or bandeau tops and avoid wearing too much fabric on top.
Small Waist: Add some curves to your figure by drawing attention to your waist. Banded and embellished bottoms will add extra volume to your waist creating an hourglass figure. Avoid wearing solid colors and stripes.
Short Legs: Look for high cut swimsuits, such as the monokini, that will elongate the legs. Avoid boy shorts or embellishments that will cause attention to the lower half of the body.

Avedon For Breakfast

I have always been an Avedon fan, but after viewing his new exhibit at the SFMOMA "Richard Avedon: Photographs: 1946-2004," I look at the iconic photographer in a new light. A raw, intense, emotional spotlight.

New York-born Avedon was an integral part of fashion in the '60s - you probably recognize Twiggy's hair and Dovima with elephants. These were from his decades as the staff photographer at Harpers Bazaar. He then delved into the zeitgeist of the turbulent '60s, shooting portraits of players in the sexual and intellectual counterculture movements; the Beatles, Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan, Malcolm X, and Andy Warhol were all present in one room. One photo that had me mesmerized was a glimpse of Warhol's scar-ridden torso; it was provocative yet melancholy, further feeding into the artistic enigma that is Warhol.

Self-portraits of the late photographer were sprinkled throughout, showing his evolution from young gun to wise old soul.

One series in particular intrigued: "In the American West" (1980-85). While it was exciting to look into the eyes of famed writers, artists, political figures, and icons, it was the real people of our country - oil workers, a 13-year-old rattlesnake wrestler, drifters, carnies, waitresses - that evoked life, real humanity.

Avedon passed away in 2004 and this is the only US venue for this exhibition - the first major retrospective of his work since his death. If you happen to be in San Francisco July 11 to Nov. 29, be sure to eat some Avedon for breakfast, it is an utterly fulfilling, eye-opening experience. See some selections from the exhibit.

Sass and Bide Shine On

"The human spirit will always aspire to shine . . . to taste the elixir of life, and to bathe in the glory of love." Nice. I am happy to report Sass and Bide designers, Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke, are celebrating 10 years in fashion by creating the Shine Initiative. They enlisted artsy, famous friends to create art pieces that interpret what "Shine" means. The result is a true mix of inspiration from the likes of Kate Moss, Twiggy, Mischa Barton, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, and Daisy Lowe. All the works can be viewed and bid on at sassandbide.com. Proceeds will fund creative counseling workshops for abused children, led by the designers, in both Britain and Australia. July 23 bidding continues at an event in London at The Dairy - I'm sure Moss will show up! Here are some of my favorite pieces from the initiative.

On Our Radar: The Costume Institute Celebrates Models

Models have paid their dues in the industry so it's high time someone pays them the respect they deserve. That someone will be The Costume Institute Gala in their upcoming presentation dubbed, "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion,” which explores fashion, and the constantly changing ideas of beauty.

The exhibit raises the question of models serving as designer muses. Marc Jacobs, honorary chairman for the exhibit, states:

“The idea of muses or models, whether it is someone you know or someone you have seen in an image, someone of your imagination or a creature of your own invention, is important to every designer and every collection. I hate talking about inspiration, but everyone needs a catalyst. We look at this person, this model, this muse, and we design for her. It seems like a kind of fundamental thing, but wide open for lots of great clothes.”

Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake, and Anna Wintour will act as co-chairs for the event. The exhibit will run May 6 to Aug. 9 at the museum’s Tisch Galleries. Look forward to seeing photos from a wide range of models spanning the years including Twiggy, Sunny Harnett, Dorian Leigh, Jean Shrimpton, Moffitt and Veruschka, Iman and Janice Dickinson, Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow.
