Nuns and priests may have been onto something when they required their pupils to wear uniforms to school. Dress codes used to be reserved for private schools, but more public schools are adopting uniforms to help keep the focus on learning while leveling socioeconomic playing fields. Children will be less concerned with designer jeans and may be more likely to engage in conversations with classmates they might otherwise snub. It's nice for parents, too. A child's wardrobe becomes simpler and getting dressed in the morning is a no-brainer. Still, not every school has made the switch to khakis and polos. What is your child's dress code?

Parent-Issued Uniforms: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

Former Real Worlder-turned-blogging mama of five Rachel Campos-Duffy instituted a uniform policy for her three school-aged offspring, even though their classrooms don't require them. In a recent post on Parent Dish, she explained that the economical decision costs about $80 per child annually and excuses her from back to school shopping. She said:

I relieved myself of this torture several years ago when my husband and I decided that a school uniform was the easiest and most affordable way for our growing family to deal with hectic mornings, rising costs, and trends in inappropriate fashion - especially for girls.

Victoria Beckham's Fall collection can easily be described in one word: strong. The designer offered up her usual sleek, body-conscious dresses, but this time with a decidedly utilitarian touch. The military-chic collection was sexy, without being aggressively so, and was punctuated by belted waists, elbow-length sleeves, and high, collared necklines. Her signature slim-fitting vibe was still there, as were subtle nods to her family - Victoria mused that she "was in the kitchen one day" when son Romeo ran in with his baseball uniform on. "That's what inspired those bright sporty collars on the dresses," she told the Telegraph. Also, the loose beanies "were inspired by the ones David is always wearing," and there was even a handbag named after young daughter Harper. If the snow outside wasn't enough for NYFW attendees, Felipe Oliveira Baptista provided a few snowflakes of his own for Lacoste's Fall runway show this morning at Lincoln Center. As fake snow blew into the audience, Oliveira Baptista set the tone for his sporty chic ski-inspired line. Mixing in the old - Oliveira Baptista referenced uniforms the brand designed for France's 1966 national ski team - with the new, the designer conceived a smart mix of body-conscious pieces fitting for any après-ski occasion. One can easily head to the slopes, or to the cabin, in one of Oliveira Baptista's rugby-meets-ski minidresses and jumpsuits or sport-striped leggings paired with chic oversized parkas and coats. Leather quilted vests and jackets injected a luxurious touch to the overt sportif theme. With a play on fashionable function, Oliveira Baptista experimented with zippers, some of which opened up all the way up to the shoulders to replicate the look of a cardigan tossed over your shoulder, while others served as pockets for hoods disguised as a stylish oversized collar.
