Look of the Day: Flirty Vintage

Fab reader CBladyàlamode showed off her flirty, feminine side in a totally vintage-inspired ensemble. We love the juxtaposition of soft, sheer fabrics and ladylike prints in one complementary pairing - it makes us unbelievably excited for Spring. She tucked her scalloped daisy-embellished blouse into a pleated, cream-colored tea-length skirt. Then, to complete the girlier look, she chose a bright green skinny belt, cat-eye sunglasses, and chunky Jeffrey Campbell platforms to go with the flowy separates up top.

Pringle of Scotland Spring 2012

Alistair Carr showed his first collection for Pringle of Scotland today to a crowd of celebrities including Tilda Swinton, Harry Potter's Bonnie Wright, and Rosario Dawson. Carr's collection debut, described as The Beatles' “Across the Universe,” featured remixed chain link and argyle prints taken from the archives and turned into modern marvels with a '60s twist via brightly printed split-back dresses, shifts, and knits. Trousers were kept either loose or cropped, and some even featured refreshing slits around the knees and tuxedo stripes. Standout pieces include the purple chain-link print paired with metal cap-toe pumps, colored sunglasses, and the graphic print argyle knit sweaters. It was the perfect mix of modern and vintage from Alistair Carr, and we can't wait to see more from the designer. More highlights from the collection below.

Anna Sui Spring 2012

An all-star model cast including Karen Elson, Jess Stam, Arizona Muse, Karlie Kloss, and Lindsey Wixson hit the runway for Anna Sui's '40s-inspired Spring 2012 collection. With ladylike silhouettes, sweet, full-bodied prints, an electric palette - and turbans to top every look - Sui's Spring looks bright, polished, and marked with feminine charm in every detail. Nods to the womanly, the glamorous - and the very Parisian - were made throughout, in everything from the bold red lips to the lace veils, and the music transporting the crowd - including front-rower Sofia Coppola - to a bouncy dance scene in retro Paris. Indeed, the models themselves seemed to bounce along the runway in a peppy celebration of womanly clothes and colorful accents. Lindsey Wixson smiled flirtatiously, Karlie Kloss perfected her sultry half-smile, and the parade of beauties all done up in a mix of prints, socks, and sequins played perfectly to Sui's witty recreation of vintage style.

Diane von Furstenberg Spring 2012

Diane von Furstenberg never disappoints; every season we expect greatness, and every season, without fail, greatness is what we get. For Spring, DVF and creative director Yvan Mispelaere were inspired by Africa, showing us gorgeous monochromatic separates, funky, romantic prints, and the brand's signature tailored elegance in a collection titled "Beginnings." "It's about light and what light can do and how light changes everything," said von Furstenberg. "I did something I've never done before - I started with white." A refreshing cotton white wrap dress with a full skirt kicked off the energetic show, leading into a beautiful arrangement of color and prints. As the collection progressed, von Furstenberg and Mispelaere highlighted tailored button-up blouses, trousers, and Bermuda shorts in clean, solid hues. Then came the prints; vibrant and eye catching as oversized floral and ikat motifs bounced off asymmetric dresses and trousers. Always one to mix things up, von Furstenberg and Mispelaere injected a little bit of the mod '60s into the collection via beaded shift dresses and beehive updos. I'm excited to present a post from one of our favorite sites ShelterPop!

We interviewed two flea market fanatics - a longtime seller and a devoted buyer - to get the scoop on how to get the best price on the octopus-shaped pendant or shabby chic credenza you've got your eye on.

You like wearing other people's used clothing. You're not afraid of bedbugs. You love shopping at flea markets.

Somewhere along the line, someone decided that the word "vintage" was a synonym for "cool," which is why we have legions of women dressing like grandmothers and decorating with needlepoint pillows.But regardless of how many old-timey pieces you want to pick up when you're cruising the flea market circuit, your ultimate goal is to get a good deal. Just because something is old doesn't mean it's worth a million dollars, right? So, how can you be sure that you're going to walk away with the best deal upon leaving your favorite flea market?

Consider the following:

Bargain by . . . Knowing Where You Are
Flea markets are like snowflakes: No two are alike. "Think about the market's overall vibe: Is it aiming to be some D-list joint, shilling sunglasses, socks and cheap clock radios, or does it feature things you'd find on Etsy?" says Ashlea Halpern, a New York City-based freelance editor. "I could spend hours wandering the latter, but if I've stumbled across the former, I eat some funnel cake and get out."

Bargain by . . . Shopping Around
Your mama told you right. When it comes to flea markets, you better shop around. Remember that just because something is "vintage" doesn't necessarily mean it's one-of-a-kind. "Always walk once all the way through the market before making any purchases," Halpern advises. "I was so annoyed at one market last year when I dropped $18 on what I thought was a rad copper octopus pendant, only to discover an even radder copper octopus pendant for $15 two booths over." Unless you've fallen completely and totally in love with an item right on the spot (if so, get a grip), it may be better to assess what's on offer at other booths before making a deal.

5 Things You Didn't Know About Oliver Peoples

Oliver Peoples defines understated cool. They're not flashy sunglasses, and never will be. But somehow, the line based out of LA has become super fly, for the best reasons: the shades are really well-made and always seem to hone in on just the right shape. So just who is Oliver Peoples? We spoke with founder and creative director Larry Leight to get some good dirt on this quietly awesome brand. Here are five things you didn't know:

Oliver Peoples was a man before a brand
In 1986, optician Larry Leight purchased an estate collection of vintage, American-made eyewear, which included beautiful filigreed frames and clip-ons from the American machine age. With this purchase was a receipt signed by "Oliver Peoples," who was presumed to be the original owner. According to the estate seller, the man had no known living family, so Larry decided to name the store (and later the wholesale company) Oliver Peoples in his honor.
