Judd Apatow, writer/director of comedy gold, is everywhere. In interviews with the cute Paul Rudd, like one from this week's Entertainment Weekly, it's mostly about Judd Apatow. Interviews that include Judd and Seth Rogen are... mostly about Judd Apatow. From The New York Times to MTV, everyone is talking about Judd Apatow, and I think I know why.

With this Friday's Knocked Up, Apatow's follow-up to last summer's hit comedy 40-Year-Old Virgin, he has accomplished what many wish to do but can't: He has created a movie that is both funny and touching, and which appeals to both men and women - a "bromantic comedy," if you will. He loves his yucky humor, but rarely sacrifices the integrity of the story at large to achieve a cheap laugh. He makes fun of both men and women without truly insulting either group. In interviews he comes off as just a funny dude who is also a family man.

I've been fascinated by Apatow ever since his "Freaks and Geeks" days when he gave a hilarious new voice for all the high school weirdos of the world, so I am thrilled that he is not only producing better and better work, but is truly enjoying the spotlight. What's Buzzworthy? Embarrassing Movies to Watch With Parents

Here at the Sugar offices, we recently got to talking about what movies we could watch with our moms for Mother's Day, which inevitably led to a discussion about which movies not to watch with our moms. Someone warned against Because I Said So, which seems like an easy-breezy fun chick flick, but features an uncomfortable scene in which Mandy Moore's character explains to her mother (Diane Keaton) exactly what an orgasm is like.

Another suggestion was The 40-Year-Old Virgin, which Molly made the mistake of sitting down to watch with her future in-laws at their home on Christmas Eve. Also - though it's not a movie, per se - I can advise from experience to avoid Robin Williams' Live On Broadway stand-up special - unless your folks are prone to falling asleep before the end of things. That last drawn-out joke about oral sex is brutal.

Now, fess up: Which movies have you blushed and cringed through in the presence of your mom, dad, grandparents, in-laws, etc.? "Bromantic Comedies": Wave of the Future

Disney just picked up a romantic comedy called Undateable, which tells the "real-life tale of romantic loser Brian Wolf, who launched a Web site (www.settleforbrian.com) as a last-ditch attempt at landing a girlfriend." On his site, Wolf (pictured) lists the pros and cons about himself, along with this practical reasoning:

I know what you're thinking. Settling is admitting defeat. Only losers settle, right? Wrong. Everybody settles. There are no perfect relationships. Do you think you're going to end up happy holding out for Mr. Right? You won't. You'll end up old, alone, and miserable. You don't want that. And I don't want that. So I'd like to propose an alternative.

This idea is funny, but it also has a cute ending: Wolf actually met his girlfriend through the site. So what do we have here? The makings of a new trend. Call it the "bromantic comedy," or a romantic comedy "that guys actually want to see," according to Undateable writer Jack Angelo. I'd love to see more "bromantic comedies." The films that are called romantic comedies have long been lacking in the actual "comedy" aspect, at least in regard to what I find funny (Two Weeks Notice? How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days?!). Similarly, the typical "bro" comedies strike me as lame (the Van Wilder films, for example). I loved 40-Year-Old Virgin, however, and so did many of the males I know.

Thus, I come to my official prediction for the summer: Knocked Up (by 40-Y-O Virgin guy Judd Apatow and starring Katherine Heigl) will be hugely successful - not just at the box office, but also with critics. That's a hard thing to do, but if it works, it's an indication that these "bromantic comedies" might be the best idea for the future since, miraculously, everyone's happy.

The next step? Chick flicks that guys want to see, or "brick flicks."

Funny People, a new film starring Adam Sandler, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill and Seth Rogan is about to hit theatres in the UK on 28th August. It's made quite the splash in America already with it's hysterical cast and slapstick plot. For those of you who don't already know who Leslie Mann is (think Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin and Big Daddy) she's side-splittlingly funny, charming and to boot, she has perfectly taught skin. Yesterday, she was in London at a question and answer session at BAFTA and I just loved the colour of her strawberry blonde hair. It's a soft shade of not too red and not too blonde that complements that gorgeous milky skin. Out of these three different hair colour below, which do you like the most on Leslie?

Oscar, smocker. Yeah it's nice that everyone dresses up and takes voting very seriously for the industry's sake, but let's face it, the MTV movie awards are so much more entertaining. There is never a dull moment. Humpday: Takes the Bromance to Its Logical Conclusion

I can't wait to see Humpday, director Lynn Shelton's new film about old college friends who decide to enter an amateur porn filmmaking contest and to have sex with one another on film. Did I mention they're straight men? Shelton has said that the film is about how straight men can turn anything into a competition - even if it means having to do each other.

The film hasn't come out yet, so I'm only going on reviews and the director's comments, but I'm a little disappointed that the sex doesn't arise for the two men out of confused affection for one another, but rather because of a contest. To hear why I think we need more films about men loving each other (or lovin' on one another) and why it's good for women, read more.

I'm convinced that if men were able to admit on some level that they want to be close - not necessarily have sex, obviously, but that maybe an attraction is possible - a lot of macho crap like denigrating women and homophobia wouldn't be so rampant. Why? Because a more open definition of masculinity would mean fewer threats to it. Take gay men - you don't hear a lot of stories about them punching straight people in the face for being straight.

A slew of films about male bonding, or bromances - Pineapple Express, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Superbad - have highlighted the cute and sometimes touching bonds men share. (Although sometimes, as I argued here, it's at the expense of women.) In my favorite scene in Superbad, Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) finally admit to one another during a slumber party that they love each other and will miss one another when they go off to college. It's stupid, says Seth, that men can't say "I love you" to one another.

I couldn't agree more, and whether or not Humpday ends up being a progressive movie about (extreme) male bonding or expands the idea of what straight men can be to each other (and others), I bet we haven't heard the last of this subject.
