London Fashion Week, Spring 2010: Temperley London

Alice Temperley took inspiration from the circus for Spring 2010. The collection, like last season, was shown as a presentation rather than a catwalk show (which you can see below). She looked at all aspects from the tattooed lady, to trapeze artists to the ring master and these are all represented throughout. Examples include top hats, tailed jackets, and tattooed dresses. The first ever Temperley footwear line is being launched for Spring with studded gladiator sandals, flat jazz pumps and killer heels.

With only a few weeks to go until fashion shows kick off again, I have been catching up with one of London's best loved designers Alice Temperley. Earlier in the week I shared the first part of the interview with you as she discussed expanding her label, designing childrenswear and her must have Autumn items. Now, Alice discusses the impact of the economy, style on a budget and her London shopping tips.

Has the economic climate influenced your designs, or made you reconsider things? No not at all, the emphasis is on luxurious timeless pieces, in that sense we are giving our clients the choice of a selection of fine well made garments that will last. Temperley London has always had the philosophy of creating a great price / value relationship which is working in our favour now.

Have any other designers (past or present) influenced you? Yves Saint Laurent for his beautiful workmanship and the perfect balance between strong, powerful sexy and feminine.

You had a presentation last season instead of a catwalk show, how do you foresee the future of international fashion weeks? For the time being the future lies in presentations coupled with digital installations for us as we are continuing to explore and expand the concept. We experienced a great response to the concept and are working hard on making SS 2010 unique and special. We will see how this develops over the next 12 months or so. It seems a lot of brands are reconsidering and following us down the road of exploration this season.

Any London shopping tips? Yes, visit Alice¹s on Portobello road for all kinds of antiques and curiosities, and the Temperley London Store in Notting Hill of course! Apart from that pay a visit to Portobello Market on Friday or Saturday or take a trip East to the markets there.

Any tips for style on a budget? Taking one key piece and making it work for you by pairing with belts and accessories. Belts are amazing for completely reinventing an outfit and creating a completely different silhouette.

What essentials do you keep in your handbag? A bottle of my favourite L¹Artisan La Chasse aux Papillion perfume, MAC lipstick in Lady Danger, blackberry, camera and sketch book and pencils, just in case I get a quite moment to jot ideas down.

There are only a few weeks to go until the Spring 2010 shows kick off in New York City where Temperley London currently shows. I recently caught up with Alice to find out about her inspiration for the new season, details of her label expansion and her must have items for Autumn '09.

You have shown in both New York and London, what do you think are the main differences between the two fashion capitals? There is a definite buzz in New York that comes from being the first in the seasonal calendar. It is much bigger and more money orientated which used to draw bigger crowds of press and buyers. London is filled with eccentricity and creativity, which I love.

Has your son, Fox, encouraged you to design childrenswear at all? We do a small line of children¹s wear called Temperley for Little People; there are only a few select pieces in the collection, most recently the Cashmere Leopard print romper complete with ears and a tail. We aim to expand the line in 2010.

I fell in love with the shoes Olivia Morris created for you Autumn AW09 show, do you have any plans to extend your label at all? The shoes have been well received & I love to collaborate with different designers on footwear. However, we are launching our own Temperley London shoes for Spring 2010.

What has inspired your Spring 2010 show? We are producing another global digital installation. The inspiration is the circus and we are building a fantastic installation for it that will be unveiled at MILK studios in New York. It is all very exciting at this stage as the collection and the creative aspects really come together, I am afraid I can't say more than that!

Would you ever consider a High Street collaboration? Yes, we previously collaborated with Target, the response was incredible and it was great to be able to open the collections up to a different audience. We recently have been focusing on our own lines and working on a huge project for Spring 2010 which has been taking up most of our attention.

What are your must have items for Autumn AW09? Leather jackets and bandage knit mini skirts with zips and lace details to go with the sexy '80s vibe at the moment, I love the revival of past decades and none are more fun than the '80s!

Fab Flash: Temperley London Pulls Out of Catwalk Show

Roland Mouret warned us back in September that "There will come a time when the fashion shows as know them will end," and it seems that time is coming sooner than any of us could have predicted. Autumn 2009 has already seen the cancellation of shows by Vera Wang and Betsey Johnson but now we can add Temperley London to that list.

Alice Temperley returned to her home turf with the label for Spring 2009 but it seems the homecoming was short lived. It has been revealed that she will not stage a catwalk show for Autumn 2009, instead she will hold presentations with a twist.

Temperley London has asked video artists and photographers to put together a series of installations in New York, London, and Paris to accompany the new season clothes. CEO and husband of Alice, Lars von Bennigsen, released a statement explaining, "From an economic and environmental point of view, it has become more and more difficult to support the constant global travel schedule for fashion sellers, buyers, and press.”

Biggest Headline of 2008: Designer Babies

This year the world's population got a little bit more fashionable as some of the biggest names in the fashion industry added to their brood. Very early on in January Stella McCartney welcomed her third child in to the world. Beckett Robert Lee Willis was born on 8th January 2008 but Stella still managed to present her Autumn 2008 line in February. Phew!

Alice Temperley had no sooner left the catwalk following her triumphant return to London than she welcomed baby Fox London Temperley von Bennigsen Mackiewicz in to her life. She was quickly followed in to the maternity ward by Preen designer Thea Bragazzi and stylist Bay Garnett. What a busy year on the fashion maternity ward, surely shaping some of the style icons of the future? Congratulations to all of the ladies!

Sneak Preview of Temperley London Spring 2009

Last week I was lucky enough to get a preview of the Spring collection by Alice Temperley. The British designer returned to London Fashion Week in September and has since given birth to a baby boy. Her celebrity fans include Mischa Barton and Tess Daly who wore a dress from the Spring 2009 line to the NTA's last week.

The pieces are true to Temperley's style with feminine dresses, floral patterns and classic shapes. Alice titled the collection 'Romantic Odyssey' and it was inspired by the age of Enchantment in the early 20th century. During this time people yearned for escapist fantasy and turned in great numbers to exotic tales and colourful designs. Temperley presents this for Spring with a line combining bold graphic details, rich fabrics and colourful accents.

The accessories line mixed fabrics for interesting textures incorporating pleating and studded detail. There are chunky oversized belts with star details and classically elegant styled handbags.

Nobody does Summer dresses like Temperley and my personal favourite from the collection was a floral dress with draped shoulder to hem detailing. I liked how the draping added a quirky touch to the dress whilst still remaining wearable. A bit of glitz was added with a silver rope belt.

Fab Flash: Alice Temperley Gives Birth to a Son

Back in March Alice Temperley announced her pregnancy and now mere days after her return to London Fashion Week she has given birth to a baby boy!

He was born on Saturday morning at 9am. Alice and her husband Lars von Bennigsen have named him (take a deep breath) Fox London Temperley von Bennigsen Mackiewicz.

The press office released a statement saying, "Having successfully returned to London to show the Temperley London spring/summer 2009 collection on September 15, only five days prior to giving birth, it has been an eventful but wonderful time for the designer and first time mother."

Wonder if little Fox will make a catwalk appearance in the coming seasons?

Storming Twenties at Temperley

Mischa Barton, Rosamund Pike and Peaches Geldof witnessed the Temperley show at London 2009 Spring Fashion Week yesterday. The designer showed beautifully structured jackets, high-waist trousers, red-carpet worthy draped dresses, ruffled gowns and gorgeous asymmetrical cocktail frocks.

The beauty mood was dramatic as the models sported high-voltage smoky eyes in dark grey, stormy purple and coal black. The colour was taken right up to the brows for a modern effect, while black liner and strong brows balanced the look. Skin was fresh and natural, with a touch of creamy pink blush, and lips were almost bare in peony-pink lipstick with a hint of gloss.

The hair referenced the Great Gatsby era of the 20's with severe side partings giving way to slicked back hair. Optical flower headdresses in lilac and fuschia gave a nod to futuristic fantasies although various odds hats, in leopard print and black chiffon, rather detracted from the romance. Elsewhere, the slicked-back, almost boyish hair was the perfect antidote to Alice Temperley's ultra pretty creations. To see more images from the show, read more.
