Trend Alert: Stormy Prints

My new go-to cocktail is a Dark and Stormy. Imagine yourself in a dim dive, drinking one of those bad boys, in a stormy print. Tough stuff. Kristen Bell upped her stormy stuff by wearing this marble-print Vena Cava layered over a printed tank and studded Louboutins. And yet, she doesn't appear, too, intimidating. She softened things up with her killer smile and golden locks. Whether a thunderstorm or lightening strike, stormy prints are electric.

After witnessing their Spring collection, my obsession with Vena Cava grows. Let's immerse ourselves into their Fall look book shall we? This collection of modern feminine pieces is composed of structured leather jackets, soft silk frocks, printed tops with hard edge embellishments, and streamlined skirts. Their feminine touches are just right, not overly so - exactly how I like it. It's still warm here in SF, but once the clouds roll in, I'll be living in this understated leather dress. So cool. 2010 Spring New York Trend Alert: Naranja

Though I don't have a lot of it in my closet (do any of us?), I quite enjoy naranja, aka orange. It's optimistic, energizing, youthful - it is FitSugar's color, after all. Amongst all the white, neutrals, and grays of Spring, orange stood out to me at once. Red is Fall's favorite fiery hue, so it's no surprise its tangy sister has stepped in for Spring. Diane von Furstenberg didn't hold back - Chanel Iman is double layered in orange goodness. In need of a new outlook on life? Nibble on some naranja.

Inspired: Vena Cava 2010 Spring

New York Fashion Week is a mecca for design enthusiasts around the world, but it's not limited to fashionistas. There's plenty of interior design inspiration to find on the catwalk, be it in a pattern, a material, a shape, or the heft of a model's bangle. Vena Cava is one of my favorites, so it's no surprise that I found lots of design inspiration from the label's 2010 Spring collection.

Get the Look: Pleasing Purples at Vena Cava

Yesterday's Vena Cava show featured neutral-toned clothing, with pops of bold orange thrown in for good measure. But, it was the purple lips that had me mesmerized, and so far, it's been one of my favorite looks at 2010 Spring Fashion Week. The tone remains edgy, but completely wearable, particularly when paired with MAC Coquette Eye Shadow ($14.50), a muted grayish-taupe shade that makeup artist LLoyd Simmonds used to create this look. "The collection is inspired by the graphic wall murals of the Ndebele tribe in South Africa, with a Maude Labowski take on styling, so we created a bold, graphic lip in violet," he said. To mimic the flattering shade, Simmonds blended Pro Lipmix in white, burgundy, red, and blue to create a matte, opaque, violet lip. But, you could get a similar, simplified look by blotting MAC Lipstick in Rebel ($14).

2010 Spring New York Fashion Week: Vena Cava

Vena Cava always does things a little differently. Both in show presentation and clothing inspiration; that's why they are a growing fashion force. Vena Cava was at Milk Studios - where numerous designers are showing this time around - and I arrived promptly on time because I heard rumblings the designers were doing a runway show in lieu of their usual presentation style. They did both. It started as a runway show, models perched themselves around and on ladders, then it turned into a presentation - the best of both worlds. The Fiery Furnaces performing live were an awesome accompaniment to the modern, exotic collection. From marbelized prints, to laser cuts, to hints of skin, Vena Cava loves to play. But in a very sophisticated manner. A dress may be baby doll, but it's far from goo-goo-gaa-gaa in a sexy black-rayon jersey and metal safety-pin camisole. The palette was moody - black, brown, grays - but a punchy orange saved it from somber. The orange cupra jersey asymmetrical dress made my heart skip. Lisa and Sophie, the hotshot design duo, continue to experiment with separates. Dresses are always unique, but skirts, jumpsuits, shorts, busters, leggings, and tees were thrown into the mix. Accessories weren't forgotten; stylist Kate Young completed looks with Persol shades, Robert Clergerie shoes, and Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co. jewels. Vena Cava - where there's smoke, there's fire.

Open House: How Does Your Home Have a Sense of Humor?

Refinery29 recently toured the home of Vena Cava designer Lisa Maycock and while I did love the easy elegance of her home's "lost and found" look, what struck me most was its sense of humor. In a corner of her living room, she placed a wooden triangle pegged with metal spikes on her Marcel Breuer Wassily Chair. In her bedroom, a poster titled "Just Bone Me" with skeletons in kama sutra poses hangs above her bed.I once had a cocktail party, and lined the shelves of my medicine cabinet with medicine bottles filled with candy. Or, sometimes I'll write silly notes to my guests with lipstick on my bathroom mirror. On most days, though, my house is tame, aside from its playful attitude toward scale and trompe l'œil effects like my painted headboard. How about your home? Do you play tricks on your guests? A recent visit to the Otte boutique in NYC - yes, I bought some goodies - lured me to check out its online site. Nicky Hilton Sports and Supports Gap/CFDA

Considering Nicky Hilton consistently wore Matthew Williamson for H&M before it came out, I'm not surprised that she's the first celebrity to jump on the Gap CFDA Design Editions line.
