Milan Fashion Week: Wunderkind

You're probably more familiar with German designer Wolfgang Joop from his eponymous Joop! line, established way back in 1979. But his second Wunderkind label, launched in 2003, is where the action is now.

The Spring 2007 collection, which was just shown at Milan Fashion Week, is wondrous indeed-both in its wearablity and its creativity. I particularly like the use of big but delicate floral patterns, bell-shaped skirts, and lace cut-outs, all of which call to mind a fairytale vibe. I could, however, live without ever wearing one of those Bo-Peep-style bonnets. Look Book Love: Alexander Wang, Pre-Fall '09

For his Pre-Fall collection, Alexander Wang manifested a dope line of unique, wearable clothes. I kinda love the influx of sheer leggings but if that's not your style, there's mucho more to choose from. To help feed our cool-girl personas, the wunderkind designed lean, leather vests, tailored separates, perfectly draped tees, and a couple badass frocks – remember Rihanna in this one? I can totally see myself donning Wang's casually sleek 'fits for nights out on the town and his hipster looks for a fun day at work. Really, what can't the Wang do?

Fab Flash: Halston Wants Olivier Theyskens

UPDATE: Halston reps have shot down rumors of Oliver Theyskens taking over as its next creative director. "Olivier will never, ever happen," said a source. "It's no secret that [the brand] is struggling - they need a designer who can sell lots and lots of clothes, not just get great press."

With just months after showing his last collection for Nina Ricci, Olivier Theyskens might already be headed to a new fashion house. Rumor has it Anne Wintour has coaxed Halston to take on her wunderkind as its new creative director position. However, other sources revealed Halston was considering Narciso Rodriguez or Marios Schwab to take over Marco Zanini's position. Nothing is confirmed, but we all know what Anna wants, Anna gets. We'll keep you posted.

FabSugar Designer of the Year Nominee: Louis Vuitton

The third nominee for FabSugar Designer of the Year is what you get when you pair one of the oldest French fashion houses with one of New York's fashion darlings. In 1997, Marc Jacobs was crowned the designer for Louis Vuitton and his collections have been spot on ever since. Pre-LV Marc Jacobs designed for Perry Ellis in 1986, and his tightly-knit polo shirts and cable knit cashmere sweater dresses gave way to grunge. Still remembered in fashion circles, the fashion wunderkind sent combat boots and dirty plaid down the runway, to very mixed results. Jacobs was fired in 1992...yes, fired! But whatever, that's just fashion history.

Marc immediately began an incredibly lucrative clothing business while modernizing Vuitton by collaborating with such artists as Stephen Sprouse (who irreverently graffitied bags) and later Takashi Murakami (who added a bubble-gum anime humor to the line). This year his Fall '06 collection was a trailblazer and his Spring '07 collection offered a big dose of true romance. Both would have made Mr. Vuitton proud.

Target has added yet another upscale label to its accessible design roster: the hip, chic Rafe New York line of shoes and bags, founded by Filipino wunderkind Rafe Totengco in 1995. For the past decade, Totengco has created edgy, urban bags in the $500 range, but with his Target line, he's bringing his distinctive style to the masses. Though these limited-edition bags are all priced under $50, they look like big-budget buys. Here's a look at the line.
