Coco Before Chanel: More Than Just a Fashion Flick

I thought I had a good handle on the woman, the legend, Coco Chanel: Gabrielle, a magical seamstress, androgynous, smoker. Little did I know when I sat down to see Coco Before Chanel that I was going to embark on an emotional roller coaster - beautiful, deep, tear-inducing.

Naturally, a big part of the film is the wardrobe, but don't go expecting extravagance. Remember, this is Coco before Chanel, when she would make hats at home and sew her clothes out of her lover's closet. Menswear influences - bow-ties, vests, bowler hats - are major players. Pearls and tweed came much later; perhaps there should be a sequel, Coco After Chanel.

Love It or Hate It: Audrey's Big Black Bow

I can only dream of having thick, wavy hair like Audrey Tautou, but in the meantime, I'll just admire it from afar. At last night's LA premiere of Coco Avant Chanel, Audrey accessorized that enviable cute and flirty wavy pixie with a silky black bow with multiple folds. Notice how the placement and dark color of this hair accent almost mimics the texture and dark tones of the actress's short locks. It's almost as if it's an extension of her hairstyle. But what do you think of Audrey's scrunched accessory? Is it stylishly quirky, or a bit too offbeat?

When it comes to movies, I'm a sucker for beautiful sets and stunning costumes. That's partially why I'm so excited about seeing the biopic about Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's early years, Coco Avant Chanel. Starring Audrey Tautou as well as many fabulous costumes, which were created by Catherine Leterrier, this film opens in the US in mid-September. I was so taken with the costumes that I decided to see how I could translate Leterrier's lovely creations to the home world.

The most exciting fashion film of the year has to be Coco Avant Chanel starring the gorgeous Audrey Tautou. The French film has gathered a lot of hype throughout it's production owing to an impressive wardrobe and a little guidance from Karl Lagerfeld. We've already seen stills from the film and it is finally released across the UK on 31st July. I have long admired the bouncy, theatrical hairstyle Audrey Tautou wore in one of my favorite flicks, Amélie. She is just painfully cute, non? But, alas, I have finer, straighter locks than Audrey's naturally thick wavy strands, so it would take lots of extra products and effort to achieve this look, which I consider to be a perfect mix of the chic, quirky, and gamine. In the meantime, I'll just admire this stacked bob with baby fringe from afar. Check out this adorable video of a long-haired Audrey prepping for her iconic role, complete with curly, flippy, sleek, and pinned-pack versions of the now-famous style.

First Look: Audrey Tautou on the Set of the New Chanel N°5 Film

If you're a die-hard Chanel fan (like me) you'll be excited to learn that the new advertising film (otherwise known as a souped up commercial) for the N°5 fragrance was directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and it stars the lovely Audrey Tautou. The setting is a train en route to Istabul. Picture a handsome man traveling alone, who becomes startled and enamoured by the beauty (and of course essence) of a strange woman. Billie Holiday is playing in the background and the sexy glimmer of an over-sized bottle is the main prop. Jean-Pierre Jeunet says:

"I’ve always loved night trains and their magic: it’s the perfect opportunity to create an encounter in suspended time. I really liked the idea of a woman meeting a man. They both think about each other, but continue on with their own lives, left with the regret that they didn’t make contact with the other person. I love to play with destiny and coincidences... I knew that the story would revolve around the mesmerizing effect of the scent in the woman’s wake. We had to give voice to the intangible."

Audrey and Jean-Pierre have worked together in the past on films such as Amélie and a
Very Long Engagement. She was told to condense her acting and make every movement more intense than ever, as what could normally be conveyed over time in a film must be expressed in seconds for a commercial. The film, in deliberate Chanel fashion is set for a UK launch on fifth of May (get it, the fifth day of the fifth month for for N°5).
