Fab Read: You Know You Want It, Style – Inspiration – Confidence

If Eric Daman looks familiar to you, it's because he was recently posing pretty with Leighton Meester at the launch of his book, You Know You Want It: Style – Inspiration – Confidence ($20).

The Gossip Girl costume designer knows a thing or two about fashion, after all, don't we all covet Blair, Serena, Vanessa, and Jenny's fabulous Upper East Side ensembles? Daman says the trick to pulling off any ensemble is owning it, and in this book, he teaches us how to do just that via confidence and pizazz. (Side note, I think confidence is a woman's personal journey, I don't believe it can be taught.)

“A catalyst for the book was that I wanted to send the message that fashion and style [don’t] have to be scary - [they] can be totally accessible,” said Daman. "I always say style is 20 percent fashion and 80 percent confidence. You have to own it.” The book also includes a forward by the queen bee herself, Leighton Meester.

OMFG! Blow, Booze, and Threesomes on Gossip Girl

You know what the Parents Television Council doesn't like? Threesomes. Implicit or explicit, it says there's no place for a ménage à trois on network TV. Fair enough! The council has asked The CW to reconsider airing Monday's Gossip Girl episode, which will feature a threesome.

After an US Weekly interview about the sartorial splendor of Gossip Girl, Costume Designer Eric Daman took a jab at the controversy while talking to New York magazine's Daily Intel. He made a very valid point, saying:

"So, it’s okay for them to be doing blow and drinking Scotch when they’re 18, but it’s not okay for them to be having a threesome?"

I can't really argue with that! About a quarter of TrèsSugar readers have had a threesome, which sounds about right to me. In my experience, teen drinking is more about taking your vodka messy in Gatorade bottles rather than neat in martini glasses - forget thinking about threesomes! So while the Parents Television Council can take their argument to the network that brought us OMFG, I'd have to say GFL! What say you?

Leighton and Olivia Step Out Confidently For Gossip Girl Style

Leighton Meester posed in a punchy dress with her former costar Nicole Fiscella and Olivia Palermo in NYC last night at the launch party for You Know You Want It: Style-Inspiration-Confidence, a book written by Gossip Girl's costume designer Eric Daman. Leighton supported the man who puts her in so many fabulous clothes, which she was once again showing off on the set yesterday with Ed Westwick and a surprising reappearing costar. She, Olivia, and Nicole all looked fantastic on the red carpet and inside the party, so maybe they learned a thing or two from the book they were out to help promote. We caught up with Eric earlier this week at the ACE Awards, where he shared a little about dressing the show's stars:

On who's most enthusiastic about their wardrobes: "Everyone goes with the flow. Blake has a little more opinions on it, because she's very body-conscious and knows what looks great on her. She's been in front of the cameras long enough to be able to say, 'This would be better if it was a half inch shorter' - which is great. It's a dream as a costume designer to have someone, who's like, 'Lets do this!'"
On dressing the guys: "The guys are pretty into it. The guys just want to look good when it comes down to it, which is pretty easy. Chuck/Ed is really into it - he really likes to look amazing and he has been one of my favorites from day one. To be able to play with menswear in the way that we do and pioneer that men get to dress better, and that it's OK to wear a bow tie and a pink shirt and not be too gay about it."

It's Kisses For Everyone at the Gossip Girl Season Two Party

Some lovely ladies of Gossip Girl celebrated the upcoming season at a party hosted by Henri Bendel and YSL Beaute in Manhattan last night. The actors were also out to recognize their costume designer, Eric Daman, who got a big smooch from Jessica Szohr. Blake, Penn, Ed, and Chace were MIA, but the rest of the girls represented with lots of fierce posing. Leighton even brought along her rumored boyfriend, Sebastian Stan. While they got super cute with their red carpet kisses, it's only one more week until we get to see who queen bee Blair gets romantic with on season two.

Meet the Man Behind Gossip Girl's Closet

Have you ever wondered who the lucky person is that gets to decide what the Gossip Girl gang gets to wear each week? It's costume stylist Eric Daman, who also once assisted Patricia Field on the set of Sex and the City. He recently stepped out from the background and chatted with WWD about his enviable job. Daman started out as a buyer at a boutique in Paris and went on to be an overnight model discovered by photographer Steven Meisel (his first modeling job was with Kate Moss). He eventually followed his dream of styling, and what he has done with Gossip Girl is a fashion phenomenon. The proof is in the pictures. Here are the highlights from his interview:

Eric on whether it’s more important for characters to look approachable or aspirational: It should be a little bit of both. I always make sure I mix some of the higher-end looks with something from a less expensive brand. I use stuff from Forever 21 and H&M all the time. You will always see someone wearing a $5,000 dress with a pair of Nine West shoes. That is how people dress today anyway.
So, do the actors have a say in how their characters dress? I’m not a fashion Nazi. Blake [Lively] and Leighton [Meester] love to give their input, but they understand that I am there to help them create and develop their characters.
Naturally, the Gossip Girls' individual styles have developed dramatically. It’s funny because they came into this as these fashion-naïve kids from LA who moved to New York in order to portray these true New Yorkers. They are like New Yorkers now - real, fashionable New Yorkers.

Eric's thoughts on doing his own apparel line? I’ve thought about this a lot, actually. I would want to do a mass line, like something for Kohl’s, Target, Charlotte Russe. Then I would like to do a higher-end, capsule collection for a store like Bendel’s or Barneys. Again, it’s all about accessible fashion and mixing it up.

On Our Radar: Gossip Girl

Get ready for some eye candy...of the clothing persuasion. The CW's new fall show "Gossip Girl" may be set at a Manhattan private school, but the three main female characters, Blair, Serena, and Jenny, will not just be wearing plaid.

The show is styled by costume designer Eric Daman, who worked with Pat Field on "Sex and the City" (!). Of his vision for the Gossip Girls, he says: "These girls have become like muses, and they know these young New York designers are right there with the ones on the verge. It's almost like they discover them before the buyers discover them."

Each character has a unique style, be it sophisticated, laid-back, or quirky, but between the three of them, their wardrobes run the gamut from Alice Ritter, Lanvin, Vena Cava, Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Peter Som to Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and Chanel. In other words, lots and lots of clothes. Fab clothes.

As Blake Lively, who plays Serena, estimates, she tried on more than 500 dresses in two months between all the fittings for filming, publicity stills, and editorial shoots. Jelly much?

Michelle Talks About "Man-Eater" Georgina's New Relationship

Michelle Trachtenberg stopped by the opening of Guess's new flagship boutique last night in NYC. She took a night off from work on the new season of Gossip Girl, which will see Georgina return as Blair's roommate at NYU. Michelle has practiced a few scenes with Penn Badgley, so we asked her about a potential relationship between Georgina and Dan. She said:

On whether Georgina dates Dan in the new season: "Georgina is definitely a man-eater. And there will be a man in her life, and it’s a boy that we know. I asked for all three, but Josh Schwartz is a real stickler. He only let me have one. So you’ll have to find out."
On her favorite part about playing Georgina: "She’s phenomenal! I mean to be able to have that sort of crazy behavior, that sort of over-the-top maliciousness, that revenge-seeking everything, but to have someone patting you on the back at the end of the day and say good job and to not have to deal with any repercussions is phenomenal. Also, of course, my wardrobe is out of this world. It’s so fantastic! Eric Daman is a god and it keeps getting better and better every episode. I just had a fitting yesterday and it’s just like, I don’t want to leave."

Michelle played it coy, but it looks like many of the other GG guys are already spoken for on set. She also dished about Georgina's fab nails, so head over to Bella for those details.
