Fashion Week Quickie: Fetherston's Fall LBD

I plan to attend Erin Fetherston's show at New York Fashion Week. It's always a girlie trip down her runway, but come Fall, expect "refined whimsy." This designer is known for her whimsy, but it looks like she's going to present something more mature. By the looks of this LBD it's going to be party-ready. Cute!

Fashion Week Quickie: Arise Magazine Brings Africana to Fashion Week

One of the things I love about attending Fashion Week is the abundance of fash lit. Virtually every local NYC magazine and newspaper creates special spreads for the tents, and Fashion Week Daily is my everyday fashion breakfast/waiting reading.

This Friday, I will keep my eyes peeled for Arise Magazine. The new monthly Nigerian-based magazine will debut with the African Fashion Collective fashion show at the tents. The show will give four African designers the spotlight, each unveiling 12 to 15 looks in the show.

ThisDay chairman and chief executive officer Nduka Obaigbena states, “I think it’s about an opportunity . . . Africa has been under-reported and under-recognized. Meanwhile, so many big talents have African origins. We think it’s time Africa gets the rightful recognition in the global cultural landscape, and its fashion contribution is one of them.”

The premiere issue features Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede and Alek Wek on its cover, and delivers African accomplishments in business, politics, fashion, music, and overall culture. The next cover model? President Barack Obama.

Fashion Week Quickie: Rebecca Taylor

Raise your hand if you're a Rebecca Taylor fanatic? I sort of was, but after her too cute Spring collection, I am now 100%. I'm stoked to see what she's thinking for Fall. Here's a sneak peek!

Her Fall collection is inspired by imagery from Northern European fairytales. Like this sketch, oversized wrap coats are belted and worn over cool ruffled tops tucked into wide leg trousers. Expect pastel shades of field flowers and the Scandinavian sea contrasted with deep hues of violet, beetroot and pomegranate - sounds lavish. Artisanal metals serve as embellishments and chunky Lucite jewelry will bring the Taylor girl into modern times.

Fashion Week Quickie: Tracy Reese Goes Eclectic

We can always look forward to feminine, fanciful clothes from Tracy Reese. For Fall, Reese promises an eclectic collection inspired by post-impressionist portraiture, including the works of Vuillard, Van Gogh, and Modigliani. Pattern mixing and rich color combinations are something to look out for. Colors are described as "rustic chic" and include mixing raspberry plaids, pink florals, and basil green argyles. Silhouettes are relaxed and slender, and spectator heels add the finishing touch.

Fashion Week Quickie: A Kruger Souvenir

Hands down, my best celebrity sighting at New York Fashion Week was Fab favorite Diane Kruger. I don't know what it is about her. No, actually, I do. She's demure and ladylike, but also experimental and youthful. This is how I like to describe my own personal style. And, just when you think you've nailed down her look, she wears something totally fresh and unexpected. She only attended the Tommy Hilfiger show - in mad plaid - and I had direct view of her. If you asked me to describe the Spring Hilfiger collection, you'd get a hazy explanation, because my eyes were struggling to stay on her while taking in the sporty, elegant clothes; it's usually the other way around. While Diane was whisked away too soon for me to catch her, I pulled a fast one and took her seat holder as a Fashion Week souvenir. Care to join the Fab fan club?

Fashion Week Quickie: Colette x Gap Sets Up Shop in NYC

If you can't go to Paris, let Paris come to you. That was Gap's mentality when it decided to collaborate with renowned Paris boutique Colette to create a one-month installation in New York City.

The Colette x Gap concept store, adjacent to Gap's flagship store at 54th and 5th Avenue, will operate from Sept. 6 through Oct. 5 and will sell hard-to-find products from around the world. Products include Colette-designed Oakley sunglasses, limited-edition Gap tees with prints by Paris versus New York artists, Repetto BB shoes, and more. This is the first Colette store in the US, but hopefully it won't be the last. Oh, and you know I'll be sure to check it out when I'm in town for Fashion Week.

Fashion Week Quickie: The Outfit Plan

As you read this I am Jet Blueing across the country. I will be doing a mix of restless organization, napping, and guilty television watching. Don't you love long flights sometimes? I do, especially during hectic times when you are forced to sit still and chill out. But before I embark on another fashion-filled week, stressed to the max, inspired to the fullest, my days working at Martha Stewart help me prepare. If you have yet to see the infamous outfit plan (print your own), which I do before every Fashion Week, here's the latest and Fabest.The approach this time is a mix of minimalism and California laid-back style. Colors are black, white, and purple, and jewelry is playing a bigger part than ever before. Total amount of shoes: Four pairs! Not bad, considering previous seasons. Bags: Also four - don't ask me why. But these always need to be big enough to carry my reporter essentials; brands represented on Fab's shoulder will be Foley + Corinna, vintage Bottega Veneta, Hogan, and Prada. Does anyone else spot an Italian theme here? Jackets, oh how I love them so, will be kept to a minimum given the warm forecast (yes!), and my Marc by Marc umbrella is packed! Get ready girls, let the fashion games begin.

Twinkle designer Wenlan Chia has her eye on iconic actress Jean Seberg. For Spring, her schoolgirl charm is translated to classic tailored pieces, made over with sporty elements. But she keeps things feminine with bohemian artistry. These two looks demonstrate the juxtaposition. As the designer put it: "The blend of colors, textures, vintage inspired prints, and tailored silhouettes give my collection a classic, romantic quality - reminiscent of Jean Seberg’s legacy." Cute, right?

With celebrity fans like Kim Cattrall and the ladies of Lipstick Jungle, Dennis Basso always churns out luxurious red carpet-worthy gowns and dresses. It's safe to safe evening garb is his forté. For Spring, Basso is "feeling strong about the American sea side, patio dressing, breezy Summer evenings and fabrics that move.” His sketch is dramatic and beautiful.

Don't you love having a preview of what's in store for Spring '09 before it's even on the runways? I'll keep 'em coming, don't you worry. If Tracy Reese is a nature lover, Rebecca Taylor is a travel hound. But both American designers share a love of everyday pretty clothes.

Taylor gets worldly, having the fantasy of stepping into another time. Her dresses, bound to be numerous, have intimate detailing and ethereal layers of florals, chiffons, and lace. A neutral palette paired with rich jewel tones and watercolor designs deliver modernity and opulence. The Rebecca Taylor girl for Spring '09 is a bohemian world traveler: "She mixes her inherited couture pieces from her French actress mother with great finds gathered from exotic locations around the globe." She, sounds like someone I'd like to befriend.
