It may feel like gladiator sandals pop up as a Summer time trend as regularly as knitwear appears in winter, but this season they come in more shapes and sizes than ever.

Whether you opt for a metallic pair, sandals emblazoned with jewels or a statement knee high style this is an item that you're sure to give in to. This year they appeared on the catwalk at Balenciaga, Miu Miu and Burberry but plenty of cheaper styles are now available on the High Street.

If you've got long legs then you could easily pull off an ankle high pair or knee high if you're feeling daring, for those with shorter legs opt for a lower pair which will be more flattering. You can team with a maxi dress (as seen here on Rachel Bilson) or with a playsuit (as seen on Sienna Miller).

You all know by now that I am a huge fan of gladiator sandals, even though my friends say I look like Hercules when I wear them. Whatever. These Lanvin Gladiator Sandals, $575, to me, are one of the best kinds out there. Worn with a pair of itty-bitty denim shorts and a simple white tee, they would look dazzling. If they're a bit out of your league, you'll be excited for the look for less...I sure was!

Almost identical, these Dolce Vita Fondue Gladiator Sandals, $87, are the perfect alternative to the Lanvin ones. They even have the same t-strap and python detail. For less than half the price, I'd purchase these. And if ever asked "Are those Lanvins?" I'd just smile and nod. A little white lie never hurt anyone!

Defend This Movie: Gladiator

We all love things that others love to hate, whether it's a Counting Crows CD you can't get rid of or your "Degrassi Junior High" boxed set. Now I'm giving you a chance to explain yourselves in a new feature called Defend This.

In honor of the fast-approaching 2007 Oscars, I'm devoting this week's Defend This to a recent Best Picture winner that I find baffling: Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Not only did this movie take the top prize at the 2001 Oscars, but Russell Crowe also won Best Actor, beating out Ed Harris for Pollock and Javier Bardem in Before Night Falls. More tragically, what was basically a mediocre action movie set in ancient Rome beat out the far worthier Traffic and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Now, I know many of you are probably saying to yourselves, "Hey, I liked Gladiator!" Great! But can you justify its winning a Best Picture Oscar? If so, tell me below. Now, on your marks, get set, defend!

Jellie Gladiators: Love It or Hate It?

Lately, I've been living in gladiators. Like a leather jacket, they add the perfect edgy touch to a girlie ensemble. I was thrilled when I found these Jellie Gladiators ($20) that come in cobalt, hot pink, bronze, silver, black, and white. If it weren't for the gladiator part of the equation, I wouldn't like it, but the jellie part makes it all the more unique. I got the cobalt, will you?

Rihanna's Balenciaga Gladiator Boots: Love It or Hate It?

Rihanna is never one to shy away from extreme trends, but her Balenciaga gladiator boots are pretty dramatic. Hey, there is nothing wrong with that! The singer visited the BET studios in what may appear to be a crazy outfit, but if anyone can pull it off, it's someone young and funky like Rihanna. I'm relieved she kept the top half of her ensemble all black - anything else would have clashed horribly. Are you digging her gladiator boots or are they better left on the runway?

Who Wore It Better? Blue and Green Balenciaga Gladiator Sandals

You know the zeitgeist is in flux when Heidi Montag wears a Balenciaga item even before Sarah Jessica Parker! The reality starlet hit up NYC with Spencer on Wednesday, and took us all by surprise when she actually wore a cool outfit, complete with blue and green Balenciaga gladiator sandals. Then, the ever-so-lovely SJP filmed a commercial on Thursday in a Carrie-inspired outfit and the same exact Balenciaga shoes. I can't believe I'm doing this, but in this case, I prefer Heidi's outfit because it's more my style. Personalities aside, who do you think wore it better?

Trend Alert: The Bronze Gladiator

I revel in it when a previous bargain of mine finally makes it to trend status. Not to brag, but I scored a pair of Christian Dior bronze gladiators over a year ago on major markdown - they were from the 2008 Cruise collection. It was right when gladiators were surfacing, though I've always liked the masculine/feminine sandal. Now gladiators are every which where and it was hard to miss Gwyneth's Giuseppe Zanotti for Balmain bronze sandals at the Two Lovers premiere in Cannes. So we all have black ones, move on to the lover, the fighter, the bronze gladiator.
