Ecco Domani has just added some green power to their Fashion Foundation by adding a sustainable design award to its existing program.

“The fashion industry as a whole is taking an important step towards eco-conscious design and production. Through this new award we are proud to acknowledge those emerging designers who are using their talent to make a difference in the world in which we live” , said David Bowman, senior director of marketing at Ecco Domani Wines.

The award will be open to a women's or menswear designer who exemplifies their commitment to sustainability based on three criteria: environment, social equity, and economic viability.

The 2009 winners, one in sustainable design, four womenswear, one menswear, and one accessories designer will each receive $25,000 towards their showing at NY Fall Fashion Week in February. This year's winners had a lot to say and we hope next year's will be just as exciting.

On Our Radar: H&M Goes Greener

We already know that H&M started an organic cotton collection but now the company has announced that it's going greener. It plans an even bigger step into organic cotton for Autumn/Winter 2008-2009, and will use other sustainable materials like organic and recycled wool and polyester.

"We are now using organic cotton in all departments," said H&M's head of design, Ann-Sofie Johansson.

Among the organic items you will be able to buy are accessories like scarves (left), and recycled wool mix skirts, coats, and trousers. I'm in!

Happy Earth Day everyone! We should try to make eco-friendly decisions every day, but if you haven't already, today is the day to reflect on how you can make a difference, big or small.

Shopbop is doing its part by housing an eco-friendly section dedicated to designers who have gone green. Larsen Gray, Beau Soleil, Bono's EDUN, and C& C California are just a few in the eco-chic roster. They are living proof that you can be nice to the environment without sacrificing style and quality. On Our Radar: Banana Republic Supports the Earth

Earth Day is on April 22, but Banana Republic is showing support for the global holiday early. Starting April 8, the retailer will house a 50-piece eco-friendly collection for women and men. All merchandise, retailing from $24 to $150, is made of renewable or sustainable fabrics like bamboo and organic cotton. One percent of all in-store sales will go to Trust for Public Lands, a nonprofit national land conservation organization.

This isn't a one-time thing for Banana Republic though; it will be an ongoing concept. Given Banana's stylish track record, I'm sure I'll be investing in some pieces and simultaneously helping out mother nature!

Lutz & Patmos's Tina Lutz and Marcia Patmos are expanding. Leroy & Perry is their latest brainchild and it brings us environmentally friendly sweaters without the high price.

It all started when that the vice president of fashion merchandising at Barneys New York mentioned how tough it was to find good sweaters for Barneys Co-op. Lutz & Patmos partnered with Barneys Green and has created three eco-friendly styles for Spring and a handful of items for Fall. Each will retail for less than $300 at Barneys and one percent of all proceeds will benefit The Alliance for Climate Protection. Whether the duo plans to roll out the collection to other stores remains to be seen.

For Spring, H&M introduced an organic cotton collection. Due to its success, the chain retailer has placed a greater emphasis on organic cotton for Fall. The collection now includes underwear and outerwear for women, men, teens, and children.

Fear not: going green is not getting in the way of the fashionable and cheap styles we've all grown to love. "Naturally our customers are concerned about the environment, but it’s also important that garments are up-to-the-minute trend-wise. Romantic styles combined with sporty influences are key this autumn with the use of denim as a complementary fabric," says H&M's head of design Margareta van den Bosch. Great to know one of our favorite retailers is going green!

I have the Anna Corinna Mini City Tote, so naturally I am a little biased about this Foley + Corinna Country Tote, $444. First and foremost, I am in love with the shape. Victoria's Secret plans to launch mini-collections of eco-friendly clothing, including fleece tees, tanks, and accessories all made from organic cotton. Heavy emphasis on the "mini" in mini-collection: the pieces will be a good environmentally-friendly option, but they will make up a small amount of the overall VS offering.

Ever since they decided to ban plastic shopping bags here in San Francisco a few months ago, fashionable alternatives have really been on my mind. We've talked about the Anya Hindmarch "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" Tote, and the Marc by Marc canvas tote (got it!), but this new option may be my favorite yet.

The Baggu ("bag" in Japanese), $8, is made out of super strong ripstop material - it holds 25 lbs of groceries, which is equal to the amount 2 to 3 plastic grocery bags can carry! It's machine washable, ethically made in China, and can be folded into a really small pocket-sized pouch when it's not being used. Well lookie what we have here. Looks like Sienna is all about going going green with her little pupperoni! Her "Club Sandwiches Not Seals" hoodie definitely makes a PC fashion statement, as does her LOVEly tote. Although, that cigarette in her hand isn't the most eco friendly accessory. Tisk. It's good to see her making a real fashion statement - right on sister.

Fab Flash: Designers Use Eco-Friendly Fabrics

Lately, more and more American and European designers and companies such as A-Style, Moral Fervor, Elisa Jimenez, and Brooklyn Industries have started to use Inego fibers, hailed as the world's first man-made fiber from 100 percent annually renewable resources. Launched in 2003, Inego uses corn as a derivative, and cost is 10 to 15 percent more than standard cotton. The good news is that market research indicates that people are willing to spend a bit more to help the environment.

Emily Santamore, the creator of Moral Fervor and her partner Melissa Sack are one such label who have gone green. The duo moved to New York and created their eco-friendly brand, which for Spring, is selling t-shirts that are made of 100% Indigo fibers, approx. $80.

Seems many people are adapting to the new green lifestyle, so if you haven't already, go go green!
