Tasty Treats For Halloween Bashes: Wicked Witch Cupcakes

Halloween's focus may be on a youngster's costume and the candy he gathers as he makes his way through the neighborhood, but that doesn't mean the party can't start early with some tasty treats. From school-sponsored bashes to kiddie soirees, Halloween parties offer lil ones another opportunity to show off their costumes and indulge in some sweets to kick off the spooktacular holiday.

With some inspiration from Martha Stewart, a platter of wicked witch cupcakes is more likely to put a smile on a wee one's face than frighten him. After baking up a favorite cupcake recipe, simply mix up some green buttercream icing, add a chocolate ice cream cone hat, and dig into your Halloween candy supply for some pieces that will create a witchy face. Be sure to have a few extra on hand as these devilishly good delights are sure to entice the parents as much as the kids.

Whether you're whipping up some homemade eggnog, visiting extended family, or taking in the must-see holiday movies, here's wishing the very best for you and yours. Even if the weather outside is frightful, I hope all of you readers are enjoying the day, perhaps by a fire that's so delightful. And of course, I hope you've decked the house with a festive dose of holiday décor - and that Santa leaves you what you asked for under your Christmas tree. Let it snow!

Holiday Survival: Go in With a Plan

The holidays offer plenty of opportunities for indulgence, which can be both a blessing and a curse for some of us. There's no need to deprive yourself during the festivities, but there's a way to enjoy the great food without going totally overboard. Create a plan of attack before attending parties or big dinners so that you don't eat too much of everything in sight.

There are two ways to approach your plan. Either select certain foods that you know you want to eat, or take a few bites of a bigger selection of treats. For example, if you're a die-hard fan of your mom's special Christmas cookies, but there will be other sweets offered, consider simply sticking to your favorite cookie so that you don't waste calories on something you like less. Another idea would be to choose a maximum number of cookies you'll eat, and then select whatever has your mouth watering. Make the decision ahead of time and stick to your guns when you're in the situation.

If you truly love to taste all the delights of the season, I have a tip for you when you read more.

If you're someone who truly loves it all, portion control is especially your best friend. After you've taken small samples of everything you want (and you're still hungry), choose the one thing that you loved most and take more of that one thing. The key is going in with a plan that certainly won't deprive you of holiday goodies, but will prevent you from having to unbutton your pants!

Fight Hat Head With a Few Easy Tips

Winter brings all kinds of delights, and hat head is just one of them. When the mercury plunges below 45 degrees, you'd be mad to not wear a hat. But when I visited Chicago during the holidays, I soon experienced the joy of flat, static-addled hat head. Leave it to a Chicagoan to have a few tips for beating it. Michael Jacobson of Michael & Michael salon has a few ways to banish hat head:

Roll with it. For a big event, a little preparation can help. "For longer hair, put two or three large rollers in your hair and cover with your hat," Jacobson says. "When you reach your destination, make your way to the ladies room and remove and fluff. This will keep the hair from getting matted down under the hat."
Modify your ponytail. Pebbles Flintstone might have had the right idea all along. "Put your hair into a loose ponytail at the crown of the head and tuck it under the hat," Jacobson suggests. "When the hat comes off, undo the ponytail and shake it out with your fingers."
Be prepared. Women with short hair can refresh their hair easily with a bit of pomade. "Pomades are also great for eliminating static once the hat comes off," Jacobson says. Just remember to use only a small amount to keep hair from looking overly slick.
