Hughes Cinema Style: The Breakfast Club

I have dedicated not one but two FABTVs to The Breakfast Club. So yeah, it's a fave. It's no Sixteen Candles or Weird Science, but it's up there in Fab's John Hughes top three. I think my favorite character's style in this one is actually not Molly - it's bad boy Bender. With his flannel-over-thermal and bandana-around-boot, he had style for miles. And then there were four: the Jock, the Princess, the Basketcase, and the Geek . . . tres chic. Source

Hughes Cinema Style: Pretty in Pink

Continuing my fashion tributes to the late John Hughes's cinema style - Sixteen Candles fans enter here - Pretty in Pink was a modern fairytale. This time, Molly plays Andie, a fashion designing gal from the wrong side of the tracks. She has a secret crush on richie Blane, played by puppy dog faced Andrew McCarthy. The class system creates a wall for love, while Andie's weirdly fabulous friends provide comic and fashion relief. One of my favorite scenes is Duckie's "Try a Little Tenderness" lip sync - classic. And you have to love Steff, James Spader's super douche character, who had mad rich '80s boy style. Source

I'm having a hard time swallowing the news that director John Hughes died. So are Buzz and Bella. Children of the '80s everywhere are mourning. I own most of his iconic '80s films, but Sixteen Candles is my favorite. It has it all: fashion, comedy, romance, high school, Molly, Anthony, Long Duk Dong, and (swoon) Jake Ryan. To this day I am always scoping the streets for my very own Jake Ryan. Molly plays Samantha, an awkwardly adorable sophomore with a forgotten birthday, kooky family, and big crush. First Look: The Secret Life of the American Teenager

ABC Family's The Secret Life of the American Teenager has a clunky title and a premise disconcertingly close to that of Juno. But it also has Molly Ringwald, and for that alone, I want to check the show out when it premieres July 1.

The show is, at face value, the story of Amy (Shailene Woodley, aka the first Kaitlin Cooper of The OC), a band geek who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant. Of course, like any show about high school and/or suburbia, her life isn't the only one full of secrets below the surface - there's also a Christian cheerleader whose decision to wait till marriage is tough on her boyfriend, the bad girl who might just be a covert nerd, and more.

The show comes from the mind and pen of Brenda Hampton, best known for creating 7th Heaven, and Secret Life seems to have a few things in common with that show - notably some over-the-top soapy dialogue and questionable child acting. And yet, it looks sweet and almost comforting, not unlike the Heav at its best.

FABTV: The Breakfast Club Dance Scene

FABTV is taking a new direction this week - let's not forget about important fashion/music/dance moments in film. It's these hybrids that sometimes make cinematic history. Flashdance anyone? But onto a less famous scene from a very famous film, the one, the only, The Breakfast Club. The song is so-so, but the moves are so groovy. Each character has their individual style that totally works with their persona. The Prom Queen is doing the quintessential '80s bounce kick, The Jock is working the air guitar, The Rebel is headbanging (naturally), The Basket Case is the most artistic of the bunch, and The Geek is, well, geeking out. Gotta love it.

Has it really been that long? Fox has picked up King of the Hill for a 13th season, TV Guide reports.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Judi Dench and Nicole Kidman may join Rob Marshall's film adaptation of the Broadway musical Nine.
According to ComingSoon, Werner Herzog will write and direct The Piano Tuner, a Victorian-era drama about one man's journey to war-torn Burma.
Reuters reports that the Stone Temple Pilots reunion tour is definitely a go.
Denzel Washington is attached to star as the hero in a film adaptation of the bestselling Robert Ludlum novel The Matarese Circle, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
USA Today writes that MySpace will be launching a full-fledged music service where people can buy music and concert tickets.
John Schneider and Molly Ringwald have been cast in ABC Family's Juno-esque teen pregnancy TV pilot from the creator of 7th Heaven, writes Zap2it.
Justin Long and Hayden Panettiere have been tapped to voice the lead characters in the animated family film Alpha and Omega, reports ComingSoon.

Sure, looking at this movie now there are some things that now don't seem quite right (Ted having sex with Caroline while she's passed out, say). But I still have a soft spot in my heart for this iconic '80s teenage romantic comedy.

The Results Are In: Recast Pretty In Pink

Many of the recast lists this week featured actors who seem way too old to play the high school kids in Pretty in Pink. Yet when I took a look at how old the original cast was, most of them had been out of high school (and college) for years already; James Spader, for instance, was 26. Thus, I went with a recast list full of actors who at least look like they could be in high school... more or less.

It seems like the most fun character to recast was the quirky Iona. I could easily see any number of funny women playing that awesome role, from WhiplashGirlchild and aras8218's pick of Lisa Kudrow to lem0n and conlaw2's Zooey Deschanel to Parker Posey, chosen by brazilnut and lslybnks.
