10 Fashion Observations, Straight From Paris

My recent trip to Paris left me inundated with chic fashion observations. Whether I was window shopping on Rue Saint-Honoré or strolling down Rue St. Germain, I would always spot a cool trend, another form of inspiration for my closet. Left and right, effortlessly gorgeous women on bikes and on foot would stop me dead in my tracks. It's a mystery how they don't brush their hair and barely wear makeup, but look so damn good. Bella, any ideas? Fashion-wise, we all know that Parisians love, love, love black. Even visitors, like L'Uomo Vogue editor Giovanna Battaglia, get sucked into the black hole when they go. Olivia Palermo, Sweet Sailorette: Love It or Hate It?

Olivia Palermo always looks put together, head to toe. At a recent event in NYC, the socialite exuded a sweet sailorette look in a red and white striped dress. But it's the surrounding pieces that are debatable. An oversized ribbon hangs from her collar, taking her look from modern to theatrical. A black clutch, rhinestone bracelet, and black booties complete her red-carpet look. Are you digging it, or is it too literal?

Trend Alert: Fresh Stripes

Gone are the days when striped button-down tops reminded us of "office" clothes. Nowadays, I'm seeing a new light, a new crop of fresh stripes. They're easy, they're breezy, and they're too cool to pass up. Don't worry about wrinkles or slight imperfections, just go with the fresh flow. Even better, you can wear these stripes year-round. I'm wearing my stripes right now with shorts and sandals; come Fall, I'll be rockin' them layered with a turtleneck and tights.

Color me jealous. Sergeantkero looks like she's in a tropical paradise standing amongst palm trees and balmy weather. Check her out cruisin' down the cobblestones wearing a refreshing striped top and cropped pants. The two pieces are awesome in themselves, but notice how her bright cobalt sandals further her fashion.

Look of the Day: Stylish Stripes

There are subtle stripes, then there are stylish stripes, like the ones Itsybitsy is sporting. The silhouette of her dress borders on retro, but the stripes bring it down to earth while keeping it stylish. I adore the color and the tier detail.

Stripes are the little black dress of tabletop décor. They're always in style. You can never go wrong with a good striped or broad-plaid tablecloth. For instance, I'm absolutely in love with the Designers Guild Dickenson print, and I don't see that changing . . . ever. It's a good thing, because a table cloth and six napkins will cost me $195. For now, I might have to treat myself to a set of four napkins ($40). But why stop there? There are so many striped table linens to love. See my other beautiful finds when you read more.

Nice and New: Flor Sitting Pretty Rug

Flor tiles have always seemed casual to me, modern and piecemealed as they are. The new Sitting Pretty Rug ($374.70 for 8x10), though, looks striking and fresh in this formal living room. No, it's not a stuffy Persian import, but step onto its brilliant orange-and-pink stripe pattern and you'll feel like you're somewhere. On the other hand, it would look just at home with a bean bag chair and a cozy low coffee table as it does with this Louis Ghost Chair, delicate wainscoting, and curvy French settee. I'm sold.

In honor of Independence Day, I'm bringing you some twists on the iconic emblems that represent this holiday. You won't have to store these in the garage, though, once July 4th is over. It's fitting that one of my favorite striped finds is the French Six Leg Upholstered Bench ($599), since France was our ally in the Revolutionary War.

Desire/Acquire: Madeline Weinrib Zig Zag Rug

The cotton flatweave Madeline Weinrib Zig Zag Rug is one of my all-time favorite designs (see it in a room here), but unfortunately it's also quite pricey - if you must "inquire for price," don't bother. Luckily, there are two much more affordable alternatives. To see them, read more.

The West Elm Zig Zag Rug ($39-$649) has a similar traditional chevron pattern, is hand-woven and handloomed, and made from 80 percent wool and 20 percent cotton. It's also reversible! It's available in an ivory/espresso/flax colorway or iron/ivory/fez red.
If those colors aren't up your alley, you can get yours the DIY way. With basic sewing skills, you can transform a basic stripe pattern into your beloved chevron with a few supplies and some patience. Learn the steps here.Source
