Burberry made their first venture in to social networking this morning as they launched the Art of the Trench which is a homage to the classic coat. The trench coat has become a wardrobe staple and the brand is synonymous with this style. Christopher Bailey wanted fans of the item to engage with each other by tapping in to their passion for the item.

The trench coat has become a wardrobe staple but much like the parka, it was first introduced for the military by Thomas Burberry back at the turn of the 20th century.
They became a fashion item in the 1960s and were made popular by fictional characters such as Dick Tracy and Rick Blaine from Casablanca.
It is defined as, "A raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton drill or poplin, wool gabardine, or in some cases leather: it generally has a removable insulated lining; and it is usually knee-length or longer."

I'm hesitant to diss Katie Holmes' style because I am of the camp that thinks her fashion sense has grown leaps and bounds post Tom Cruise. That said, simply put, she sometimes dresses too old for her age.
We get it, she has an older man to keep up with, but that doesn't mean she has to dress his age.

A traditional trench coat is good, but a pretty in plaid one is Fab. Mstinalin's bold choice of outerwear shows that she's not willing to blend into the crowd. Way to stand out girl!

One piece of outerwear you will find in every fashion professional's closet is a trench. The trench has been around for ions — and is functional fashion at its best. First created by Thomas Burberry for the British army officers in World War I, the garment kept the troops warm and dry in the trenches.

What's a plentiful Fall wardrobe without a classic trench? Seriously lacking, that's what. Trench coats never go out of style, and they're great when not-so-nice weather comes along, as it likes to do around this time of year.
