Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Viktor & Rolf

After last season, when models walked out attached to their own personal lighting apparatuses, I was curious to see what gimmick Viktor & Rolf would come up with next.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are romancing the harlequin for Spring: Pierrot collars, pom-poms, diamond shapes, and violins were choice motifs. The pretty palette was Chanel-inspired: black, white, blushing pink and peach. There were a couple trademark fashion-as-surrealist-art outfits - the ruffled pink coat which framed the model's face with a white rosette and pink violin, for instance.

But as the models emerged from a gaping mouth, it was clear that Viktor & Rolf was going more commercial. Wearable silk minidresses with lace collars and multiple beautiful tiered gowns were red carpet-ready. Even the violin theme was toned down to a lace appliqué or a necklace. Subtle Viktor & Rolf, but the Amsterdam-based fashion brand still astounds.

Simply Fab: Viktor & Rolf Rosé Sauvage

Viktor & Rolf, the Dutch designers well-known for turning things upside down, have lent their unique abilities to Rémy Cointreau's Champagne house Piper Heidsieck to create Viktor & Rolf Rosé Sauvage.

In true V&R style, the champagne bottle's bottom becomes its top, and its back becomes the front. The accompanying ice bucket and champagne flutes share a similar illusion, with the flute turning upside down into a cocktail glass. What a cool idea!

Created by the kooky, avant garde Dutch design duo, the love-themed collection is heavily dominated by the label's trademark heart motifs, elegant tailoring, and Victorian details like high buttons and big bows. Prices range from $12.90 for a pair of heart-patterned tights to $129 for a bell-shaped trench and $349 for an over-the-top wedding dress. Viktor & Rolf Meet H&M

Not since Stella McCartney's affordable fashions hit stores last year has such a highly anticipated designer line come to H&M as Viktor & Rolf. Though the collection won't hit stores until Nov. 9, it went up online on the retailer's web site for viewing today, so you can start scoping out what you want. This and the new Behnaz Sarafpour collection at Target should provide some great Winter fashion fodder.

Viktor & Rolf Try to Outdo Flowerbomb With Eau Mega

Flowerbomb, Viktor & Rolf's first fragrance, has been a cult hit since it came out a few years ago. But this week, the brand quietly released its second scent, Eau Mega. Just so you all know how dedicated I am to good-smellin' stuff, I trekked all the way down to Nordstrom during lunch to sniff it, since only a few locations have the fragrance so far. Luckily, the reconnaissance on this baby is good.

V&R didn't play it safe at all, and Eau is totally different from the F-bomb, though just as playful. The atomizer is also too cute to be believed, and well worth playing with (you spray it by squeezing the big gold V&R seal on the side). Freaky or Fabulous? Viktor & Rolf, Masters of Illusion

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are quite the masters of illusion. Check out the trippy dress they sent down their Spring '10 runway. It looks like Anja Rubik has been chopped in half - gasp! So how did they do it? If you get close, you'll notice a black banded portion in between the two layers of tulle. I wonder which celeb will dare to walk this one down the red carpet. In the meantime, what's your take - freaky or fabulous?

Be a Clown With Viktor & Rolf For Shu Uemura

Remember when I told you back in January that one of my favorite design duos, Viktor & Rolf, were teaming up with Shu Uemura to create a line of false eyelashes? Well, the fruits of their labor are finally ready for the public, and the lashes are just as fresh and whimsical as you would expect. The three falsies were inspired by Viktor & Rolf's Spring 2008 collection, which itself was inspired by Marcel Marceau. It's no surprise, then, that they're fit for a clown, especially the rhombus with its gold-diamond pattern that looks like it belongs on a jester. I'm loving the playfulness of the set, even though they're not exactly wearable day-to-day (although stay tuned for pictures of Sugar girls wearing them!). If you're clamoring for the lashes, they'll soon be on Shu Uemura's website.

Fab Field Day: Viktor and Rolf at the Barbican

Last month I told you about plans for a Viktor and Rolf retrospective at the Barbican. Well, last night I was lucky enough to attend the private viewing of the exhibition hosted by Elle magazine alongside the likes of Mischa Barton, Alexa Chung and Kelly Osbourne. The retrospective charts the pairs success over the past fifteen years through dolls and catwalk pieces. Key pieces from throughout their career appear on small dolls as well as on full sized doll-like mannequins as you travel through the years.

An enormous dolls house has been constructed in the center of the exhibition hall with three floors of models. It may seem like the dolls would be quite freaky but actually they're so well made and the dress details are so intricate that they're actually quite fabulous. Around the outside sections are dedicated to each year since Viktor and Rolf began designing right up until their Autumn/Winter 08-09 collection.

Each sections acts more as an art installation than a catwalk report as the true political meaning behind their work becomes explicit. Each collection, despite seeming extreme initially is completely wearable when slightly adjusted, just ask Tilda Swinton whom the duo dedicated an entire collection to.

As I walked round the retrospective I became increasingly convinced that Viktor & Rolf are not just great designers but actually total geniuses. Year upon year they manage to think of twists on a regular fashion show which may seem simple in hindsight but nobody else has done it. For example, for their Spring 2005 show they firstly presented an entirely black collection that seems slightly like a zovirex ad but then the models pose at the start of the catwalk (possible a nod to Bohan's Dior line in 1963) and it revolves round to reveal exactly the same collection but in pink.
