This year was Michael Bastian's sixth time being nominated for a CFDA's Menswear Designer of the Year Award — and while he didn't win (this year's honor went to Thom Browne), he said just getting the nod from his peers is an incredible feeling. "It never gets old, and you never stop getting nervous, and I'm a hot mess at the moment," he said standing next to his label's public relations director, Eugenia Gonzalez, just moments before going into the ceremony.
Loeffler Randall had us with its perfect Fall boot, endless iterations of sweet flats, and most recently its lineup of cool-girl Rider bags — fortunately for us, the Loeffler Randall Pre-Fall 2013 collection is stocked with fresh updates on the staples we love. This time around, creative director Jessie Randall drew inspiration from Frida Kahlo's androgyny — a theme you can see in the mix of block-heeled, cutout boots and lace-up booties. As for the details, Randall taps into the artist's Southwestern heritage, giving the Rider, the Shooter bag, and more of our favorites fresh white and black contrasts, washes of bright printed color, and great natural leather finishes. Suffice it to say, Loeffler Randall strikes again with another round of covet-worthy gear to wear from now through Fall. Greta Gerwig really loves Scott Sternberg's label Band of Outsiders. "I used to go to Barneys just to touch their clothes, and I was so excited when they wanted me to do the Polaroid Campaign," she said at last night's CFDA Awards. Naturally, she attended the ceremony with Sternberg and wore a white jumpsuit that he made to look like a tuxedo for the occasion. And while she doesn't have any other fashion projects coming down the pipeline (other than trying to "look good every day"), she was happy to talk about her latest movie, Frances Ha.
Fashion designers can be a tough crowd to please, but Kate Spade creative director Deborah Lloyd said she hopes the CFDA Awards get a bit more humorous in the future. "I loved [Seth Meyers wearing the] Marc Jacobs outfit from last year," she said of last year's host, who parodied Marc Jacobs by wearing the same sheer lace dress that the designer wore to the Met Gala. "That really made me laugh, and I thought he was such a sport about that, so I hope there’s a little bit more humor. Because we are a hard crowd to please, so a few laughs will be great."
For stylist Brad Goreski's part, the highlight of the night was Linda Evangelista. "She's presenting Tim Blanks with his award and she’s the be all and end all for me. I'm a child of the '90s."
Aside from maybe the bangs, Sienna Miller's look from last night's annual Theatre World Awards is essentially a reprise of a 2009 look the actress wore while promoting G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The common denominators? One great Isabel Marant dress from the Fall 2009 collection and a similar styling M.O. In both cases, the actress added ankle boots to complete the snake-print dress, a testament to her cool-girl signature style — and a lesson that there's nothing wrong with wearing the dresses already in our closets.
Every event brings with it the temptation to buy something new, but we're following the lead of style setters like Sienna Miller and Olivia Palermo, who've proven that there's ample styling potential in recycling an old favorite with a quick update. If Sienna can rework a dress on the red carpet, we're pretty sure we can update our own favorite pieces for weddings, cocktail parties, and everything in between. Take in both looks below and let us know your thoughts on her recycled look in the comments below.
Joan Smalls doesn't just work with Riccardo Tisci — she calls him family. Last night at the CFDA Awards, Smalls — who wore a dress from Tisci's yet-to-be-unveiled Resort 2014 collection last night — said she was there to support the designer as he won the International Award for his work at Givenchy. Smalls also talked about her love for Linda Evangelista and attending the awards with Michael Kors last year.
What's it like being a well-known fashion designer? At last night's CFDA Awards, Michael Kors said he likes the "nice notoriety" of his fame, and said he was thankful he doesn't have to deal with paparazzi. He and his date, supermodel Karolina Kurkova, also shared what they plan on doing — and not doing — over the Summer.
The CFDA Awards last night delivered fierce fashions in the form of slinky metallic dresses and illusion detailing thanks to Nicole Richie and Erin Wasson. In today's Fashion Flash, we're recapping the night's big highlights and covering the best-dressed stars. Who else made our list? Watch on to find out. On Allison: H&M blazer, Zara top.
