How New York's Fash Pack Is Riding Out Sandy's Aftermath in Style

Anna Wintour's townhouse in the West Village lost power during Hurricane Sandy, so she — and a number of other industry types who live in lower Manhattan — headed uptown for safety at one of two upscale hotels.

Wintour reportedly ended up at The Mark, a five-star hotel on 77th Street at Madison Avenue. Carine Roitfeld and her son Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld are also there, as are Marc Jacobs and Helena Christensen. Hotelier André Balazs was spotted dining at the hotel's restaurant.

The Carlyle hotel, just a block away at 76th and Madison, is the temporary home of Grace Coddington, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Olsen's boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy. According to Derek Blasberg, he's also holed up at The Carlyle with Karlie Kloss, Lily Donaldson, and Poppy Delevingne.

While the close proximity of some of the most influential people in the industry might simply be a matter of coincidence, the hotels they're staying in do have places in fashion history. Vera Wang's first boutique, opened in 1990, is located on the ground floor of The Carlyle. Meanwhile, The Mark is a popular place for celebrities to get ready for the Met Gala, as it's conveniently located not far from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Other industry names who are staying at uptown hotels include Prabal Gurung — who's been tweeting from the Andaz — Georgina Chapman at The Lowell, and Sarah Jessica Parker at the Plaza Athenee.

And what of those who didn't head to hotels? Mickey Boardman is staying with his friend Marjorie Gubelmann and Garance Doré headed to an unspecified "uptown camp" so she could keep her site running. Nicola Formichetti bucked the trend and traveled south to Williamsburg, where he found "power, lights, food and Internet!"

What Will Carine Roitfeld's Fragrance Be Named?

Earlier this week we pondered what Carine Roitfeld's rumored fragrance might smell like, but now the big question is what the scent will be called.

Earlier this week we pondered what Carine Roitfeld's rumored fragrance might smell like, but now the big question is what the scent will be called. In January, Roitfeld reportedly trademarked the brand name Forgive Me and applied for protection for a wide range of beauty products. But in 2010, the fashion editor was granted a trademark for her own name that covers beauty products, clothing, shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

But which moniker will her fragrance ultimately take? It's been over two years since she trademarked her own name, and we have yet to see a Carine Roitfeld-branded ready-to-wear line or shoe collection, so perhaps she won't use that trademark. On the other hand, a "notice of possible opposition" was filed earlier this month against the Forgive Me trademark, so that name may not be the final version of Roitfeld's brand, either.

Rumor has it Carine Roitfeld's next big job won't be another high-ranking editorial position, but a perfume to call her very own. Details about the fragrance at this point are scant, but at least one report claims Roitfeld is already working on the scent.

But what will it smell like? The legendary editor's favorite scents might be a clue. A tour through Roitfeld's olfactory world, here in the gallery.

Carine Roitfeld has been named the global fashion director of Harper's Bazaar, a role she'll take on in addition to her work as the editor in chief of CR Fashion Book.

Roitfeld's work will start appearing in the March 2013 issues of the magazine, which has 26 editions internationally. She'll collaborate with the magazine's creative director, Stephen Gan, on several stories a year for various editions, and she'll also work on covers of some international editions. In addition, Roitfeld will contribute "her own unique take" on seasonal trends.

"I am thrilled to be contributing to Bazaar, a brand with a rich history of creativity," Roitfeld said in a statement. "Working with Stephen and a roster of talented photographers will be a wonderful collaboration and one that will give these stories a truly global audience."

We're excited to bring you the best fashion finds, shopping stories, and style news from one of our favorite sites, Fashionista. Today, we're taking a closer look at Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book.

After months and months of waiting, CR Fashion Book is finally here. Or at least the website is, anyway.

Crfashionbook.com launches today, and unsurprisingly, there is already a lot to love from the new site — most notably a foreword from Carine herself.

Roitfeld talks about the inspiration behind the first issue of the new magazine—which, characteristic of Roitfeld, didn't come from the latest runway trend, or pop culture craze or anything fashion-related at all. Instead, the first issue of CR takes its theme from something deeply personal to Carine: The birth of her grandchild.

Carine Roitfeld Reveals Inspiration For First Issue of CR Fashion Book

"When something is consuming your thoughts, you suddenly notice it everywhere," writes Carine Roitfeld in the editor's letter for the first issue of CR Fashion Book.
CR Fashion Book First Issue Inspired by Birth and Rebirth

"When something is consuming your thoughts, you suddenly notice it everywhere," writes Carine Roitfeld in the editor's letter for the first issue of CR Fashion Book. "When I learned that my daughter, Julia, was expecting, I immediately began seeing babies and new mothers on planes, at fashion shows, in New York and in Paris. Birth and rebirth all around. I became obsessed."

That explains why the seminal issue of the new magazine, which has been teased with videos and photographs, is "filled with both images and ideas about birth, pregnancy, and family." A black and white picture of a pregnant Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, belly exposed by an unzipped leather jacket, accompanies the online version of the editor's letter.

Evidence of this obsession is readily available on the magazine's revamped website, which launched on Tuesday. An editorial starring Marie Piovesan called "Lullaby," for example, features the model posing with a baby doll.

A focus on the industry's new talents will continue in issues to come. "I've edited the magazine to be a who's who of the next generation, as well as an ode to fashion's legends and icons," Roitfeld writes. "Created with humor, joy, grace, and always a dash of irreverence."

All Eyes on Carine Roitfeld's Collaboration With MAC (Update)

MAC has finally released images of the products included in its highly anticipated collaboration with Carine Roitfeld.

MAC has finally released images of the products included in its highly anticipated collaboration with Carine Roitfeld.

Roitfeld's beauty signature is a dramatic, smoky eye, and the MAC collection mirrors that look with dark eye shadow, bold brow colors, and nude lipstick. The editor didn't just decide on the color palette — she advised MAC on everything from the package design — which includes the same handwritten initials that appear on her new magazine CR Fashion Book — to product names.

Roitfeld also stars in the collection's ad campaign, shot by Mario Sorrenti. A look at the collection here in the gallery.

Carine Roitfeld on Makeup: "Sometimes Bad Things Are More Beautiful"

Carine Roitfeld is the name on everybody's lips right now — literally.

Carine Roitfeld is the name on everybody's lips right now — literally. As she gears up to launch her biannual magazine, CR Fashion Book, the former Vogue Paris editor is also releasing a collection of cosmetics with MAC. Known for her kohl-rimmed eyes and beige lipstick, she's curated a selection of colors and tools for the signature messy-chic CR look. The goal isn't about looking perfect, she says. "Sometimes 'bad' things are the more beautiful things," she says in this behind-the-scenes video. "When you woke up and didn't take off your mascara, your eyes can be tired, but tired-sexy — and that's what I like." The collection will be available online beginning Thursday, in stores Sept. 6, and on our faces tout de suite.
